The skeptisim that may've motivated the question in the first place should be considered. There is good reason for being on the fence.

I had considered a Jeep in the past too. Especially with the thought of a diesel under the hood of a Patriot, Wrangler, etc.

The fact is though, when I am in the market (which I am not now) if I could take my pick from the litter, it wouldn't be a Jeep with a diesel, or a Jeep period.

Now, if Subaru gets a diesel in the US, I may stray from VW, but that's about as far out as I plan to wander.

I suppose that is what happens once you own a TDI? I'm okay with that.

Good luck in your decisioning.

If only.... if only.... I wanna see a WRX (doesnt have to be STI) with near same stats running a turbo :D:D

not likely though in my price range, something under a formula car pricetag

Read the fine print of the warranty. Alot of dealers are offering life time warrantys. Its a gimick to sell you a car. You will have to do all maitenance with them even buy you tires threw them or you loose the warranty. My friend also bout a car with a lifetime warranty, they voided it after she refused to pay 300 for an engine flush.

july 24th marked a special day, Chrysler was bought out but a private firm, because frankly Chrysler's are junk and the company has gone to heck. the first move was to re-vamp the image ..... DONE..... they are now offering a lifetime guarantee on the power train. thats a solid guarantee, it covers the entire drive system, even timing belts. wo weeks ago, i would have sat here and swore up and down i would never touch a Chrysler, but now i am strongly considering a purchase. what do you think of a lifetime of free repairs to a jeep?

My wife wants a new jeep and I told her I will never pay for a chysler product. I was a mechanic at a dodge delaer for many years. I cant count how many status engines i had to rebuild under warranty. I also lost count of how many 604 tranys I swaped out. But I do have a jeep cherokee that has over 200,000 on it and runs good. I have put one exhaust manifold on it and 4 water pumps but no other problems ever.

Well, as I have stated in other posts I personally have 4 friends that will NEVER buy another VW due to all the problems they had.
One friend at dinner stated that the last straw was when his ignition went up in smoke when he tried to start the car after a jog in the park.

I have only owned 2 Chrysler products. A 2001 PT Cruiser and a 2001 Jeep Wrangler. My wife and i drove both for 30K miles and both were perfect. Never had a problem with either one.

We traded both for vehicles what got better mileage. Not for vehicles that were more reliable.

I for one would not be afraid of a Dodge, chrysler product. Of the 4 Dodge Ram pickups I have owned I was in the shop 1 time. Not to bad considering I haul cattle on the side.
I bought the Jetta for many reasons and It is a great car but the nearest dealer is 150 miles away, so I hope the VW holds up as good the the Dodge.

There is in the Wrangler :)

But yes, everything else with the Jeep name has absolutely nothing in common with that setup. Even the Cherokee has gone with an independent front suspension now (nothing really wrong with that, but the old solid front and rear axles are very strong and take abuse in off-road situations quite well).
Please don't call the Liberty a Cherokee. They are two entirely different vehicles.

Other than that, I tend to agree with you.

Outside of the US, the Liberty IS known as a Cherokee, at least in the European nations and Egypt that I know of. NA to my knowledge is the only place that has the "Liberty" nameplate.

Correct, but only technically correct. Keep in mind though, that the Liberty's body code is KJ and the Cherokee's code is XJ. (yes, I know about the SJ Cherokee, but most people only associate the name with the mid-sized XJ anyhow) They used the Liberty name here in NA because the of the heat they took for trying to put the Cherokee name on an IFS vehicle. Other than the wheel bolt pattern, transfer case and rear axle, the two vehicles share nothing in common save the "Jeep" logo on the nose.

I'm a bit more accepting of the KJ these days than I was back when I found out the XJ was being killed off for it. For what it is, it isn't bad, but it will never be a Cherokee to me (no matter how many they sell with that name plate on them).

Of course, I'm probably a bit biased as an XJ owner/enthusiast.

Too bad some one else would come out with a diesel car or better still a small diesel pick-up, for sure I would buy. I for one, will never buy a new VW again. They do not stand behind their cars what so ever. Paint falls off, windows fall down, front doors do not operate the car alarm wright, brake light switch, four way flasher switch, need I go on.

I believe there's a law preventing this.

there is no law preventing them from putting stipulations on the warranty and how the coverage works. If there is please post a link to it so we can all see it.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure this is the same law that prevents you from having your car serviced at the dealer in order to keep your warranty that people have been living by on this board for the past 6 years? Which is the reason why people on this board keep their receipts when they need to make warranty claims.

Magnuson-Moss Act
