What does your VW manual tell you? I thought that was your reference for everything associated with your ride?

Once again, you thought wrong.

It must be very difficult for you to make up your mind without VW's manual to instruct you. Why did you have to ask about wipers,, didn't you already know that Bosch makes the best? Especially since you'll purchase the cheapest that Wal-Mart has on sale anyways.

You two crack me up! (Ric & Skypup) I often just find myself looking for one of you to make an initial comment, and then the laughter begins. Seriously you two should take this act to Vegas. You'd make some dough at least with all the ever-increasing Diesel owners.

Actually, one of the two is out of place and needs to go back to the Liberal Section to get more undo attention for themselves.

The ones that came with the car! these are very good quality metal frames, and the refils are high quality, and the process is wasteless, except the rubber blade itself.

But they are a bit of a pain to change, if you haven't done them, and be certain to get the metal bias strips to curve the other way from the windshield, so the highest pressure is in the middle of the glass. For some reason, even the factory and the dealers get this wrong some times. when the blade is lifted from the glass, the blade should bow out!

Now why VW charges $10 (was $13) for a pair of refils is another story, and an indication that VW has no regrets to price gouge on parts. They don't even sell the right size, you have to cut them down (don't cut the wrong end).

But they are good.

WOW, Wal-Mart is engaged in a deep price cutting war with Target and their Malaysian import wipers are undercutting Wal-Marts Chinese brand by more than 50%.
WOW, this is certainly the buy of the 21st Century. After you rush on over to Target, bypassing Wal-Mart for this super super sale, let us know how long it takes to replace those complicated wiper blades. There are a couple of pages of instructions in the VW manual that you can read over to assist you with this very difficult endeavor. You may want to consider the purchase of two or three extra sets of the Malaysian import wipers since there may not be another good deal like this until next week sometime.

The next question is: Where can you buy genuine Bosch wipers, other than having to pay exhorbitant dealer prices??? Thanks.

You can just lift a set off a Jetta in the Wal-Mart parking lot, exchanging your used set for theirs, they'll never know!

You can get Bosch MicroEdge blades at most auto parts stores. I've used them, and frankly they're the worst blades I've ever tried. I've has just as much luck with cheap $5 no-name blades as anything else.

I have had great luck with Tridon teflon blades. Complete unit about $8/ea and refills are $8/pair. Unforunately Jetta's use two different sizes, but hey, what's a little inventory at home?

Ric knows the answer already, he's just toying with all of us.

The answer is, of course, the cheapest!! Material content or fitness for purpose are of secondary importance to the one feature which is head and shoulders above any other consideration: price.

One thing Ric: make sure the manual says it is OK to replace them first. You wouldn't want to do anything the engineers didn't say you could. After all, if they don't specify it, then you should never ever do it!!!

Ric's 'Fuzzy Math' 101

El-Cheapo Blades
52 weeks/year x 1 pair/week x $2/pair = $52/year

Good Material Blades (Bosch, Tridon, Anco)
52 weeks/year x 1 pair/52 weeks x $8/pair = $8/year

Of course, it is easy to see that the 'El-Cheapo' ones are most cost effective because the price per pair is the least.

I buy a set of quality Bosch Wiper Blades every other year (sometimes every year) and just try to give them a good cleaning with Windex Glass Cleaner every 3 - 4 months.

Remember to wipe your wiperblades clean every time you wash the car otherwise you just drag them with embedded particleces across your windshieled - never did it in the rainy NW untill recently and they last much longer !!! Teflon or graphite blades are the best, When purchasing graphite you should wipe with your finger along the edge and come away with a very slight graphite residue ensuring suffiecient graphite is present as a lubricant accross the windshield.

Tridon "teflon" blades! Those are the ones I bought! I sure hope they're still available the next time I need blades. The price is right, and they work great!
