I realise that this is way off topic but I am thinking of heading down to the White mountains area next month and I was wondering what the snow conditions are like. We were planning to rent a snowmobile or two but I am not sure if the conditions will support that. I know our winter here has been non existant.

thank you

Snow? Is that the white stuff that is supposed to fall from the sky when it gets cold out?

Well, ask agian when it really does get cold out....

Seriously, it has been a very light year for snow cover, unless the ski resort you visit has its own snowmaking equipment. Not a lot of snow, lots of thawing conditions - the snow pack will be very icy and not very snowy. What there is of it, anyway.

Northern NH and northern VT ski areas have done well enough between natural snow and the output from cold night's gun use.
Back country and bowls might be iffy, but the major trails are in great shape.

My own yard in central MA is barren of white stuff, there's a small ski area 3 miles away that has some 20 trails in use.

If there isn't enough snow for snowmobiles, rent quads instead.

Winter is long from over, and March can be a nasty month. We could wind up with 3 feet by the time your trip comes around.

I was just up in the White Mountains this past weekend. Friday night they got about 6 inches in Woodstock area. We came home Sunday after driving north of Franconia Notch, then down through Crawford notch. The most snow we saw was in the valley in Crawford notch. Snowmobile-able, it appeared. There were plenty of people out on them. We went snow shoeing on a trail that had pretty good cover.

I shall keeep my fingers crossed.

We came down a few years ago in March and noticed all of the winter damage to very many decks, roofs and shed / barns. That was a wicked winter for snowfall.

Thanks again

Here are two good resources,

Snow in inches measured around the White Mountains/AMC huts:
http://www.outdoors.org/recreation/tripplanner/go/backcountry-weather.cfm

Slightly less detail, but snow depth around the Northeast:
http://www.erh.noaa.gov/nerfc/graphics/snowmaps/html/snow_depth.html

In general, snow is decent at higher elevations and far north regions. Greens got a good dump the other day. Jay Peak is the jackpot for this winter so far, which is usually the case in a winter with no coastal storms (except in October!).

Just got back from Sunday River Maine skiing this past weekend - snow was about 6-8in of new fluff. Underneath basically new england packed powder .heh.
Although snow mobiles had been out along Rt2 etc it was packed down and showing grass already. Unless there is another couple good dumps and sustained cold weather the snow just won't hold.
BTW VT got more snow from this past storm. Sugarbush reported 24" dump, Smuggs saying 30+ over several days. You might be better off checking the VAST system for riding….

and the NH equivalent

Check with local trails and snowmobile clubs, usually there are certain seasons for ATVs and snowmobiles. You'll make some nasty enimies in some back woods real fast if you take an ATV out on a dedicated snowmobile trail when it still snowmobile season. ATV's trash the snowtrails and take tons of work to get back to normal if there's another storm.

Im not sure if NH is more forgiving of their ITS system than Maine, but still it's snowmobile season until mid march not mater how much snow is on the ground, there's always a chance of a good dumping around the corner. IE tonight.
