Whitbread filter to prevent fuel system contamination?

Has anyone installed the Whitbread CP4 Metering Valve Bypass?

https://whitbreadperformance.com/pr...ering-valve-bypass-kit?variant=44741025923231

I bought a 2012 Golf TDI about a month ago. Obviously no warranty of any sort left. Based on the CarFax it also looks like the CP4 fuel pump in it was never replaced even when it was under warranty, so, knock on wood, it's the original one. The car has 160,000 miles on the clock. And I just did my first fuel filter change. Wasn't sure what I saw was metal flakes or just bubbles, maybe I'm being paranoid. Regadless, from what I understand about the infamous CP4 pump, it's kind of a matter of when rather than IF it ever fails. So I'm considering the Whitbread device above as a means of isolating any possible future damage to the fuel pump, so I don't have to replace the entire fuel delivery system.

So the short of it - is the whitbread kit worth it? How hard was it to install? Has it saved anyone's fuel system yet?

thanks!

Got one! Should be here next week. Now I just have to hope that between now and then the planets don't misalign just so as to cause the HPFP to throw in the towel. Finger crossed / knock on wood.

Good morning everyone!
Finally carved out some time to install my bypass kit. The only thing I don't have is a VCDS interface. So - the $200 / 1-week question is:

Do I absolutely need to prime the pump after the kit is installed, or can I just run the engine afterwards?

I realize the jury is split on this one. FWIW, I did a fuel filter change a few weeks ago, and managed without priming the pump - just topped off the canister with powerservice. And it's been running well since.

Since you took the metering valve out and fuel lines were tampered to install the kit. I would advise to use a diagnostic tool to prime the HPFP.

Some guys have jumped 12v to both electric pumps in a pinch. I would think jumping 12v to just one pump would probably get the job done.

Thank you both.
I actually haven't done it yet. I had time for it today but ended up preoccupied with other things. Going to actually do it tomorrow instead.
Trouble with the diagnostic tool is it will have to be an online purchase and who knows when it will get here.

I wonder, do you guys know of any over the counter alternatives at like AutoZone or something that will be able to prime the pump via OBDII?

Got it. Looks like I'll just get one and do the whole thing right, once it arrives.

By the way, I know this was probably covered ad nauseum before, but since we're all here: does it ABSOLUTELY have to be a Ross-Tech unit? Are there cheaper ones that will allow me to prime?

If you have a laptop you can get VCDS @ https://rosstech.com/
They have a lite version that will do most of what you need for diagnostics and adjustments.
Free to use.

The only thing that work is the graph image for setting injection timing after a timing belt.
I registered it to support the vendor and use the graph chart to adjust the injection timing.
I haven't had any problems with my 2014 JSW and my laptop died so now I go to VW for my normal services.

Ladies and gentlemen,
I did it. It's been about a month since I installed the Whitbread kit, I've simply been too busy to check in with you all about it.

Bit the bullet and bought the rosstech VCDS, so the entire install was pretty much conducted by the Whitbread book.
The only real issue I encountered had nothing to do with VW or the kit at all. My clepto- neighbor low-key stealing the package when it arrived. I confronted him nicely, got the package back, rolled up my sleeves and took about 2 hours to install. And that's only because I was missing a tool and had to go get it (torx bit for a screwdriver I thhhhhhink?). If I had to do it again, it would take me an hour tops.

No issues or leaks whatsoever. Hopefully I never have to actually rely on it fulfilling its purpose, but it's a nice piece of mind.

Cheers!

Good to hear, been looking at it too. Wonder what your neighbor would've done with a CP4 disaster prevention kit lol

i thought i read somewhere you could put a cat filter that would catch all the small particles, wouldn't that be a cheaper preventative measure....
