i don't know the answer to your question or why it matters where they were made.

Most were already made in Mexico well before that year.

And tditom: the reason it matters is quality. It is believed that the Made in Germany models (eg. 2-door Golf) have less issues than Made in Mexico models (eg. Jetta)

i think you'd have a hard time proving that the quality differs based on where it was built. (as in data)

I have to disagree with this.

my 2 door Golf was made in Brazil and I see no problems with the build quality. This is a data point of one and is meaningless.

It was assembled in Brazil, it's not like they are using different parts then any of the cars assembled in Germany. Maybe some people don't understand this.

yes- the parts and process are the same no matter where a vehicle is assembled. So is the QC criteria before it leaves the factory.

My 03 TDI new car sticker says (specifically) the (TDI) engine was from Germany. It does not list either the oem plant nor city.

Off topic, it also says 40% of the parts are from Germany. 25% of the parts are from Mexico. US/Canada 8%. WAY off topic is the transmission (5 speed manual) is from Argentina.

So do the German assembled cars have the same electrical bugs that seem the show up in the Mexico/Brazilian assembled cars?

what problems are those? My Golf was assembled in Brazil, I have no electrical problems. My only problem is roasting tires in three gears, but that is self inflicted ;-)

I said *cough* It is believED. I.E. people believe. I did not say *I* believe. So, disagree all you want. :p But yes, people on here generally often believe that where the cars are made to have a quality factor.

Wasn't 2004 a transition year for the PD, were any ALH made in the first half?
I'm thinking that there was somewhere... when I look up parts specific to my model year, several sites (rockauto for one), show the ALH as an option. Haven't ever seen one show up around here, but I wouldn't bet against it existing.
