When did Canada change to the metric system?

None.
30+ years ago. I am just about the right age tha I can work in either metric or imperial in relative comfort, but some things I prefer over others.

Yeah, MPG just sounds cooler than L/100 km. Would be nice if the scangage could display MPG while using metric tank size.

I can't help but laugh at it. Anyway, I'm going to buy one SG II during my vacation. I will have to decide where to put it. The design from vwvortex is really slick but, I want to avoid breaking the plastic case of the Scan Gauge, in case I want to use in another car.

I inquired about the Blendmount from their customer service people and they told me it wouldn't fit our cars. If you look at the stalk supporting the mirror, ours is a weird oval shape, and the Blendmount is designed for a cylindrical stalk.

I ended up making a simple bracket out of metal a couple of nights ago. Just take a 5 or 6" long piece of metal about the same width as the Scangauge, bend it into an L shape and dremel a notch out of the small end to make room for the cable. Paint it black. Take the long end of the metal and slip it between the headliner and roof. Velcro your Scangauge to the short end. Once installed, the bracket is mostly invisible, so metal working skills are a non-issue. The velcro should hold it on long enough for you to order some 3M Dual Lock with the VHB (very high bond) adhesive from eBay. In my experience velcro in car interiors in warm climates will not stay stuck for long. The Dual Lock VHB does.

One problem you should be aware of with any kind of high mount is that the LCD display is hard to see against a bright sky without a very strong backlight. VW indigo is just too dim.

That said, I think it looks cool mounted high. I'll take a picture of it as soon as I can get the cable hid.

This is the most visable spot, but works. Dash space is so limited, ya know? Couldn't put mine right above the radio since I have the cupholder there, so I moved my rear defrost button over to the left and velcroed it to the two empty buttons. I left the right most one off for the scan gauge rear connection.
here's my mount guys:

i don't have to worry about traction control or heated seats so those two spots were just blank for me anyway... just stuck it there with the velcro cut into 3 small pieces... i left the right empty switch plate off to run the wire. i used a 3ft ethernet cable with a coupler down by the obd port so that if i need to use the scangauge in another car i don't have to resnake the wire down in there. works great! clean install IMO with good visibility.. :D plus i have the colors set to blue3, red1 and green0 for a perfect indigo match.

I mounted mine exactly the same way as yours, with the only exception was that I moved the two switches over to the right, then I was able to put the scan gauge towards the middle, nice place for it, without getting distracted while you drive.

Just use the velcro and stick it to the flap above the rear view mirror? I've heard some people remove the one screw and turn the flap 180 degrees and that works better.

Bump for more ideas! I just got a SGII and am still hesitant about mounting. I really wanted to flush mount it in the fake cupholder blank above the double din radio but I took it apart and there just isn't enough room without getting very very custom (soldering lots of connectors to remove the PCB and buttons away from the screen). For visibility, I suppose the best spots are in the cluster area... Time will tell.

Thanks for the pics guys. I think about every possible location is already pictured in the thread when I think about it. For now I just have it on the steering column but it's ugly there IMHO. I need to flush mount it in the spare cup holder blank but that is going to require a lot of work.

Why don't you flush mount it in one of the DIN locations below the cup holder? Put it nice trim around it

Originally i thought I wanted mine flush mounted in the cupholder location, but I think its fine the way it is. Why don't you try it out where I have mine, and if you are unsatisfied, flush mount it.

If you flush mount it, how will you unplug it quickly and grab your spare cable to check your buddies' car? Could always leave a spare patch cable plugged into the spare port I guess... I found mine worked fine over a 25 foot patch cable connected with a female to female RJ45 coupler. OBDIIcables.com is great for spare cables (and the cable diagrams are free, no purchase necessary!)

I think flush mounting is over-rated. Just like a cell phone, and ipod, or a GPS device this device should be portable in my opinion.

N_J- I have a double din monsoon head unit so no empty blank spot.

NarfBLAST- My SG will never be removed. I pan on using it for mileage so I don't want to bother setting it up for use in different vehicles.

Here is where I mounted my second Scangauge (in the Mazda5 :D). Zoom Zoom.

I basically have mine like this, but just a bit forward and on the steering column. My only complaint is that I can't see it when I turn more than just changing lanes. I do like that lexan mount to the left. Maybe someone can make up a few more of those. *hint hint*

Bump for another option I don't think I've seen mentioned - looks like it might fit nicely in here:

Check out post 14 in this thread.

Although recently I moved mine to here - on the underside of the dash covering the temp and fuel gagues - and although it was only temporary, I kind of like it there actually. The temp gauge is useless anyway (and have water temp on the SG) and really there's not much use in the fuel gauge - I've got 100 miles when the light comes on which is plenty of time to get to wherever I'm going and I fill up before long trips anyway.

I changed the color to 3 blue and 1 red to make a purpleish color that is very easy to read. 3 blue alone was too little contrast against the dark pixels.

Apparently I don't have a picture of this - I'll have to take one and post it up later.
