After 400k km, the key to my golf finally broke. :(

I've glued it back together in the mean time, but I need to find a new one asap.

The dealer quoted me about $300 to cut and program a new key.

Does anyone else have any recommendations on where to get a new key quickly?

Is it your only one? No valet key to keep you going till you get another one?

Which part is broken? Why would you need a whole key? If the blade is broken, simply replace the blade part. It shouldn't be more than $75 at the dealer to buy a cut key. If the remote is broken, get another one. Lots on E-bay for $20-$30 and swap over your key blade. I can help with the immobilizer programming if you get a new remote.

if its the metal part that is broken, you can use these guys. I have used them in the past for my 02 Jetta. It worked on all the holes except trunk.

Also as nigel has mentioned you can get a used keyfob from ebay and he will program it for you. He used to charge a large coffee, not sure what he charges now that tim's have changed thier cup sizes. :)

Thanks guys. Appreciate the help.

When I got the car in 2005, there was only 1 key provided. The seller did not have the other key.

The metal key blade is the part that broke off. It fractured near the base.

I'll look around and figure out what I need to do.

Thats easy then. Just buy a new blade. It is very easy to swap blades. If you open the blade part way, look near the base and you will see a roll pin. Simply tap out the pin and the blade separates from the base.

Once tapped out, blade slides off:

Well, I guess the blade itself didnt break. The part with the pin that holds the blade is what broke. The top of it literally fractured and fell off along with the pin.

It looks like I can get a completely new key with a blank blade on Ebay for $45. I might go with that route, then get the key cut at the dealer.

Wingnut, would you be able to help me out with programming the rest of the key?

In that case, no need to get the key cut. If its the hinge part thats broken, you have a few choices. Replace the hinge (i have one you can have), get a new switchblade half and swap the blade from your current key into the replacement, or buy a complete remote and swap over the key. Just get the part number from your remote and make sure you get the same one from e-bay.

The cheapest solution is to simply replace the hinge. Remove the VW emblem and there is a screw behind it. Remove the screw and separate the 2 halves of the case and you can swap in a new hinge and transfer your working blade to the new hinge. No need to worry about programming the immobilizer because you are keeping your own remote. If you want to get it done ASAP, I am home Sunday and can get you fixed up in about 10 minutes.

If you want to upgrade to a new remote, and you have a remote with an oval key pad, your part number should be 1J0 959 753 F.
If you want to upgrade to a newer style remote with the rectangular keypad, the part number is 1J0 959 753 T.
The remote with a rectangle pad for immo III cars is 1J0 959 753 AM and this one WILL NOT WORK with your car.
I would recommend getting a used OEM remote instead of a new one as the new ones are cheaper copies.

If you have an account on VWvortex the user mkiv1.8tJetta cuts keys and has both remotes and valets on hand. He is in Oakville. Last year I had 2 keys cut, one remote one master regular key. Forget the price but very cheap compared to dealer.

Go ghetto! Put the remote part in your pocket to keep the immobilizer happy, and use a vice grip to turn the key in the ignition. :D

Considered that. I actually took a vice grip with me the other day incase the key broke completely. Haha. :D

Wingnut, thanks for the info. It's very informative.

I currently only have a valet key for my 2001 golf (bought from a friend who had broken the master), is it possible to get a new master cut from this with one of these services? Heck, I guess i'd go even just for a second valet key since that's all I've got.,

Yes, the three letter key code defines if its valet key, a regular key is haa for example. These guys did it for me, and also programmed it
http://www.lockshopltd.com/ . If you compare the valet to the regular key there is a groove that exists on a regular key and not valet, but you can cut a regular key from a valet and it works fine.

I bought a few blanks off ebay and took them to them, but they may provide some, you can buy a flip key with the door unlock buttons and re-program that to work as well. You need someone with the right software to re-program the keys for you to work with the car.
