I have a 1998 beetle tdi 5 speed. One of my shift cables that changes gears on my manual transmission is broken.

Does anyone know where to buy a 1j0711265b?

Out of a newer one in a junkyard with updated shift tower. Jetta golf beetle all the same. They rarely break.

Is the cable actually broken (rare), or is one or more end bushing shot (much more common)?

DieselGeek sells a kit to repair the bushings if they are shot.

The '98, '99 shifters are different. Can be updated, but it's more than just the cables.
ID parts sells these for the early shifters, My old 99.5 Jetta broke the shift lever and the shift actuator, those are what the 2 cables operate.
Folks recommend updating the early shifters, more work than a cable repair.

There are just too many to list....
The early (through '99) shifters are garbage. It is worth the effort to upgrade the whole thing, from the shift tower to the knob. Find any 2000+ 4cyl A4 Golf, Jetta, or NB for parts. You'll need to swap the reverse lamp switch connector, too (easy, just two wires).

The whole shift tower slides up and out of the gearbox, just two bolts hold it in.

Thank you! I appreciate the information.

The end of the cable where it connects to the manual transmission is broken, I cannot find a replacement cable for sale.

Is there a write up on the tdiclub on this transmission shift swap?

2001 golf tdi 4 door auto now a manual, mine, 2000 golf 2 door M/T son's,daughters 98 NB non-TDI 2.0, 2003 TDI NB for next daughter, head repaired and on road, glutton for punishment got another tdi 2001NB,another yellow tdi NB , added an 06 NB DSG
The hardest part is dropping the down pipe from turbo to coupling after the cat to change out the shifter box.
It pretty easy otherwise……

When I finally got my '99.5 Golf shifter out, the POS stamped steel shifter box was CRACKED in several places, it was literally ready to break off and fall out the bottom of the car. The one cable end was essentially gone, just the round part bouncing around, and the little plastic deal atop the gearbox was cracked and came off in two pieces. At the time, the car had only 220k miles on it. My 2000 Golf, with over 600k, has a perfectly acceptable shifter still.

The early A4 cars got leftover (mostly) A3 shifter bits.... which were crap in the A3, but most of those have long since rusted away or fallen to pieces, so often the gear shift setup was able to at least last as long as the car, albeit with loose and vague and rattly shifters. But the A4 cars, mostly due to the availability of the ALH, the Chuck Norris of the TDI world, are true champions of seemingly endless longevity. So the early cars are often in need of an upgrade at some point.
