I'm new to LA and am having trouble locating where to buy oil for my '98 Jetta TDI. Mobil Delvac 1, Shell Rotella T syn, or anything similar. The closer to West LA, the better.

Thanks,
Victor

Should be at Wal-mart, autozone, pep boys, advance auto, etc.

at pep boys you can find the mobil 1 turbo diesel truck 5w40
kragen you can find the mobil 1 turbo diesel truck 5w40
at wildrose you can find the petrocanada synthetic 5w40 or elf oil

you've got a BUNCH of choices, just gotta know what you are looking for.

Pep Boys in Culver City has Rotella T in stock right now. At one time Autozone (Culver City) had Rotella T but it's been off and on for the last year.

Both NAPA and CarQuest can get the oil you want from their warehouse within one day. When I was still in San Diego, I got three 6-packs of Mobil 5w40 Turbo Diesel Truck from CarQuest, because the local parts store was less than a block from my home. 18 quarts is enough for four oil changes. It wasn't cheap -- around $7.40/quart for the CJ-4 compared to $6.80 or so for CI-4 Plus. But worth it, IMO.

Mostly I went to Kragens or AutoZone -- Kragens sometimes had Mobil 5w40, AZ usually didn't. Instead of driving around, looking for a store that had what I wanted, I just ordered from CarQuest. But I'd ordered oil from NAPA previously, so they're a good choice too.

I go to Autozone on Washington Blvd in Culver City. They usually have Rotella in the blue bottle.
FYI: I think AutoZone is having a $2.00 OFF SALE on Rotella T 5w-40 :D

why not just go to the dealers?? some should have the correct 50501 they cant be all that bad (can they?):D
Maybe because the OP has a '98 Jetta TDI and does not need the "correct" 505.01 oil?

Compared to PEP BOYS I found the price to be about the same as the price they charge at the VW dealership for the castrol 507 spec oil.
When I went to PEPBOYS I was not able to fine a single 507 spec OIL in stock. I have been there several times looking for the stuff and have never found it.
The dealership, on the other hand actually has the right stuff and doesn't charge that much more than "normal" for it.

Pep Boys [and other auto parts chains] will never have 507.00 oil though. They don't have 505.01 oil either. You'll only find 505.00 oil.

Do what a lot of us do, newbie. Order the stuff online and have it delivered right to your door! You get the correct oil at a decent price and you don't even have to let your fingers do the walking through the yellow pages; not to mention your legs doing the walking through Wally World :)

I was looking at the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 and passed after reading the back and I didnt see any 505.00 or 505.01 anything. (2003 ALH) I ended up getting some Valvaline Synth Power (full synth) 5w40 (says 505.00, 505.01) on back. Anything wrong with this oil? so the Mobile1 TDT does work in my ALH? or only works in his older TDI?

TDTor ESP are fine for the ALH motor as they are CJ-4 oils, for PD's not so.
I have ESP in both TDI's right now, both are ALH

read up on the used oil analysis thread jprine. The Mobile 1 TDT has shown to be a favorite over the Syn power.

oil top off

So if i need to at some point add oil to my 09 TDI, with 1,300 miles on it... Which is the "Castrol" 507 oil the dealer has? Is that what was put in when the car was built? I thought if topping off you should use the same type originally filled with. Thanks for the input.

Mauri, welcome to Fred's! Yes, you must use a VAG 507.00 oil. Is the dealer a convenient source for you? (You won't find such products at traditional retail outlets. Mail order would be Plan B.)

Am scrambling, too. Was at Wally World today and found it has cancelled sales of ANY 5-40, Shell or Mobil. Its Website also lists no oil, so it can't be special ordered.

Pep Boys in my area has NEVER sold 5-40 syn.

I just checked AVLube and found Delvac 1 for $150 a case, or roughly $37.50 a gallon, plus shipping. That's unacceptable.

Wow Dana, shoulda got in on that pep boys coupon deal, I was able to get 25 bottles of mobil 1 tdt. from 4 different pep boys. Pasadena, Monrovia, West Covina, La Habra.

Come out to this side a bit more. (Pasadena has plenty if you want to pay the $6.50-6.99)

Thanks. I would prefer not to go to the dealer unless i have to. Good thing is i live near Pasadena where i can get the Mobil 1 that meets the 507 standard. Just two more questions....what does VAG stand for? And if i'm topping off just in case i need to before my first oil change can i mix brands as long as they meet the 507 standard? That's my main concern. thanks!

VAG = Volkswagen Auto Group. VW/Audi/Skoda/SEAT and the other companies they own.

read the couple of posts above yours. Your FLAPS don't usually carry the 507 oils. Mobil TDT is 505. You gotta go elsewhere for your oil for your 09.

The Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 is NOT going to be found with other Mobil 1 products at any of the usual auto parts outlets. Special order only.

kooyajerms: Mobil 1 5w40 Turbo Diesel Truck is not VW 505.00 or nor does it meet any other VW spec. It is API CJ-4 only, unless you find some old API CI-4+ on the shelf somewhere. Highly recommended for 2003-and-earlier TDIs.
