Where the buyback cars go

VAG group should turn losses into gains and open a nationwide chain of VAG salvage yards and part them out. They would be able to sell the parts for more than the buyback amounts. After all, the body parts and interiors are usable regardless of the engine type. Just think, being able to purchase any body panel prepainted the correct color. That's a win for consumers.

I absolutely agree with this. Other than the engine and emissions system, this is a bonanza of very desirable parts for consumers. Makes sense to me from a financial and environmental point of view, but what the hell do I know? ;)

While true, the problem is the law of supply and demand. Vast oversupply = parts become low-value. Meanwhile there is a constant cost being incurred of holding parts in inventory, potentially for years, just waiting for someone to buy *that* particular part.

"Third world" sales is unlikely to happen in significant numbers:

- US motor vehicle standards may or may not be accepted in the rest of the world. (Red turn signals, etc.) Replace taillamps $$$.
- Instrument labelling on originally-US-market vehicles ("Miles?") is gibberish in almost the entire rest of the world. Replace instrument cluster $$$. At least the 100,000ish Canadian-market vehicles won't have this issue.
- ULSD fuel necessary for operating these vehicles may not be consistently available outside the developed world. I'm not sure how much of the rest of the world has switched over.
- Would the remaining potential destinations be able to pay enough for the cars, and shipping them, to make it economically viable?
- Why should someone in the destination market buy one of these instead of a locally-available model? Why should a VW dealer there sell a fixed imported-from-USA model instead of a locally-available new model? Parts availability - Warranty?
- Does VW want these cars showing up in places of conflict, potentially being used by "the wrong side"?

It's possible that *some* of the cars could go this route, particularly the Canadian models that already have metric instrumentation, but at a certain point it just isn't worth the trouble.

If VW gets an approved fix for these cars, it makes more sense to fix and sell the best 30% over the next two years in their original market (and in the absence of any new TDI models, that number is about right for the size of that market), keep another 10% - 20% for spare parts (junkyards that part out the cars will buy a certain percentage of them - the market will dictate how many), maaaaaaybe export a few of the Canadian buybacks after they're fixed, the rest will get flattened.

According to Green Car Reports, Volkswagen is legally permitted to do three things with the cars it buys back: "recycle" them and salvage parts for resale, export the cars for non-U.S. resale, or modify and resell them in the U.S. as used cars.

VW is not allowed to export the cars whole without fixing them. If they export without fixing, the must remove the ECU, DPF, and one or two other parts. There is no scenario where they can legally sell the cars whole anywhere in the world without (1) the EPA/CARB having approved an emissions modification, and (2) VW having applied that modification to the cars before exporting them.

I really hope that by some miracle, Gen 1 and 2 will get the green light on a fix and all this cars get back on sale to the market. I would be one eager buyer for sure.

With the new president ready to drop the hammer on the EPA, a quick appoval for gen 1 and 2 CR TDIs would not surprise me.

NO MORE VW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
600.000 of any used VW part has got to be a market killer. Add in at least 300,000 (and groing) who may or will ;) no longer own one and the market dwindles to point used TDI parts become virtually worthless. I wonder how many new TDI replacement cars have Passat or other VW marked floor mats or other items from VWs in them?

I thought about it but then considered that many literally abused (if not destroyed) their TDI,s before buyback. You really want a car whose oil may not have been changed for 2-3x the recommended intervals, Driven like a rentacar or worse, intentionally messed with? I wouldn't even buy my own back due to deferred maintenance and the fact that just looking at it reminds me of ll the grief VW caused by their intentional mischief. Then again i do miss the mileage,

Only in the minds of people posting ignorant comments who haven't read even the last half-dozen comments in this very thread.

Having mixed feelings about the EPA

Generally speaking the EPA $ucks

On the other hand

Dieselgate will be the best thing for me regarding a car buy:D:D:D:D

If I take the BB, I will profit $$$$s and have a free car for quiet a while.

Pruitt (from OKLAHOMA) will do Trump's wishes

VW will do whatever nets them the biggest recoupment of money expended on this buybock. So I think it will be a combination of things. For some, its the crusher and sell for scrap. For others, like the Passat I turned in, it will probably be a fix and resale - either here or abroad whichever location is more cost effective. And still others, maybe a sale of parts.

Convert to Gas or Electric and Sell, Use for Test Platforms

Several Obvious possibilities for these cars
2 Ways to recoup lots of money quickly: Many of the nicer cars will be stripped of the motors which as others have said can be used for tractors, boats, generators, etc. Then the cars themselves could be easily converted to Gas or Electric cars and resold. Many could be sold as a fleet of electric or gas cars for city taxis or just sold to individuals. Once converted, they could be sold (with full disclosure of cars past) and with a Salvage Title. I believe the Salvage Title would allow they to be sold with minimal liability concerns and minimal or no warrantee.
Others could be sold with or without removal of the awesome diesel motors and could end up in Trump's favorite other country- Home of his friend Vladimir. Where they could be sold without concern of US regulators!:) and right next door to their birth country of Germany (not Mexico)
VW is also very likely to use them for a series of brilliant PR Campaigns. VW could be replace the diesels with small European 1.2L gas motors and give them "Gratis" to human rights NGO's in African & Asian nations. Giving these to volunteer groups as a means of helping the underserved around the globe would make great PR and endear both future VW customers and European regulators to them. They could also be used as great test beds for autonomous vehicles and future electric engine testing, for natural gas simply to test new gas engines. Some could be used for Crash Testing. Some could be given to Government Crash testing organizations. I suspect our cars will fall into All Of the Above categories. So Worry Not, our cars will be used in some capacity. The real limitations are what nations they can be sold/driven in due to the left side steering wheel.

DanB is correct
See post #67
Cars not modified (fixed), don't leave the country without first removing court specified engine components that render them non operable

And conversion to another type of powertrain is prohibitively expensive due to the number of other parts of the vehicle that have to be changed and the extensive labour involved. At the OEM level, it is less expensive to shred the car and build a new one.

No TDIs are getting holes drilled in the engine blocks. Stop spreading FUD.
