Okay, it's for a B3 and it's a long shot, but the Vortex has been no help, so here goes...

My radiator fan tests fine when I connect it directly to the battery (both speeds work), but when I "jump" the thermoswitch connector to start the fan, the high speed blows the jumper fuse. The only thing I can think of is the control unit - BUT, I can't find one in my car! It's a B3 TurboDiesel without air conditioning. I've looked everywhere in the engine compartment, the relay panels, under the dash. Maybe my car doesn't have one.

Does anyone know what they look like, and where they are located? The generic (VR6, 16valve) B3 wiring diagram shows one in the engine compartment. Any help appreciated...

In case you haven't found it yet, and also assuming that the B3 and B4 aren't radically different: you're radiator control module should be a black box (~2" x 5") mounted near the battery with a heavy (~8 gauge) wire going to it and 50a fuse inside a clear flap. I would try to borrow someone's Bentley manual so you could copy the respective wiring diagram so you can make sure before replacing any expensive parts. Sometimes forum members list whether they have the RB manual in the Vag-com list. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, 02BNATDI, but no luck. My car has nothing like what you describe. I also got a description of a VR6 control module (similar to what you describe) and I struck out with that, too. I strongly suspect my car does not have one because it has no air conditioning.

Sorry to hear, Judging from the connector diagram in the RB Manual for B4 cars without A/C, the module should be approximately the same size. The module for my '95 VR6 Jetta is buried under the coolant reservoir, and mounted to the driver's side strut tower, making it almost impossible to see at first glance, you could try looking there.
