or 3000 miles. exactly.

(and I did that for many gallons of extra oil, back in the day)

I just get a page not found. (from the cincitdi link)

Thought this discussion was about a 2009 TDI.

So that does say, for the 2003, to check the timing belt every other oil change, which is 10 thousand miles

I suspect that the long form provided with the new car also included time intervals for each service, if the miles were not achieved.

For example earlier this year I had a customer who brought me an 04 Golf TDI, with PD engine. VW says 80k mile timing belt interval, customer went 80,635 miles since last timing belt change and the tensioner failed causing a broken timing belt and a BIG repair bill. Just 635 miles past the proper interval and then had failure. Just not worth it. :(
Well that's my $.02. :)

Cheers,
Ben
PD engines came with 100k miles belts not 80k. Where you getting you're information from?

the earlier models do have more frequent inspection of the timing belt, but go back far enough, and they call for 5000 mile oil and filter change too. (and 80k for timing belt replacement)

So that does say, for the 2003, to check the timing belt every other oil change, which is 10 thousand miles

Correction every other oil change will make it 20k not 10k as recommend by vw.

if you check the link in post #34, the 2003 model had a 5k oil change interval.

No Offense, but a little research would tell you that I am getting my info directly from VW.;) Where are you getting your info from? (http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=372242)

VW originally said 100k for the 04 PD engines, but then downgraded the timing belt interval to 80k. This can be seen on the 05-06 maintenance schedules.

All PD engines have an 80k timing belt interval, BEW, BRM, & BHW, 04-06 models.

Cheers:)

VW has published inaccurate service info in its manuals many, many times. They are hardly a reliable source when it comes to service info.

for what it is worth, I have been doing mine every 100,000 and have changed 3 on my '06. I know that you can't really tell if the belt is going to fail, but they have all "looked" good when I have pulled them out.

I don't doubt that the belt can last 100k, it's the other timing belt components that I doubt, primarily the small idler roller.

I guess I'm in the group that would rather error on the side of caution, and like to follow the suggested guidelines for preventative maintenance. Plus I've tried to learn from life lessons gained over the past 10 years of being around TDI's on a professional level.

Think about it for a moment though folks, it's called preventative maintenance for a reason. Can you push the boundaries? Absolutely. But why? Why take the chance of catastrophic failure? Preventative maintenance guidelines exist so bad things don't happen to your car.

I have over 600k on my daily driver, original motor & transmission, I didn't get this far by pushing the boundaries of preventative maintenance. I can respect others opinions, but at the same time I dislike it when I have customers call me up saying that XYZ part broke, all because they read online that it could last X amount of time instead of following the preventative maintenance schedule.

I think I've said enough now, lol.

Happy driving all,
Ben:)
