I have never purchased a new car. I am thinking about a new 2013 Jetta TDI w/DSG BASE (I have no need for sunroof, etc). I think sticker was around $25,000. I have had tips about bargain and such, but what really is a fair price to pay for one of these? Also how about some tips on what price totry and negotiate for?

All tips are welcome.

Thanks!

Invoice is about $23,100. Current incentives are a choice of (i) $500 bonus cash plus 0.9% financing, or (ii) $1,500 dealer cash. (Those incentives expire today, so check Edmunds in a few days and see if they're renewed or maybe even increased) But let's assume you pick the $1,500 dealer cash, then your starting point is $21,600.

I'd offer about $1,000 below (maybe $20,500) and see what responses you get. If everyone tells you "no", you can always increase that, but I think someone will talk turkey with you.

So offer around thay but everyone seems to say $21,500 is a fair price right? Also, what would you all say is too high to be fair? I'm thinking no more then $22,000.

One more thing. What are the chances of getting the dealer to throw in different rims? I don't want anyhing upgraded...I strictly want the color black for rims. I want the platinum gray paint and I think black rims would be great with that.

I wouldn't offer Invoice (which I said is $23,100 - $1,500 = $21,600). I would offer ~$1,000 under Invoice, i.e., $20,500.

You may have a hard time with that. Give it a try, nothing to lose, but don't be surprised if you're not successful.

I'm not entirely sure what invoice price actually means.
Theoretically, it means dealer cost. In the real world, it doesn't mean that at all. True dealer cost is well below "Invoice" for a variety of reasons.

Take a look at the Edmunds website. They provide Invoice numbers for all cars. While you're there, also check Incentives and Rebates. As I mentioned, a few of the incentives expired 7/8/13, but there should be new ones coming out any day now.

I'm about to buy a new one if the price is right, and it would make me feel better if you guys took a look at the price before I pulled the trigger.

Someone gave me a dealer that apparently gives realistic price quotes the first time. See what you think:

Best quote so far:
2013 Jetta TDI w/DSG Platinum Grey BASE model
NO add-ons (no mats, no first aid kit, no alarm kit, etc)
$21,419 (including freight)
+$199 dealer fee, taxes, tags, etc
$23,211 out the door including taxes etc
of course I will probably add a thing or two on..

I'm going around to all dealers and seeing who can do the best, so this price should get lower. I'm just curious if I'm starting at a fair deal or not.

Update:

I finally bought one.

2013 Jetta TDI w/ DSG and "free" monster mats. Platinum Grey.
$20,832 for the car
$22,616 out the door

I'm satisfied with that price. Thanks to everyone here who gave advice. I'm glad I'm in the TDI club now. Pics to come later.

2013 Jetta TDI $25.4k out the door, DSG, Premium, NAV, mats, and alarm. Of course, that was before I got the 7yr/100k Platinum Warranty ($0 deductible) and Ding Monkey...ended up being $28k flat out the door.

Check out truecar dot com

Also, the VW of Langhorne offers in the cars for sale topic on this site. That is where I bought and saved a bundle compared to my local dealer.

Truecar is not accurate. If you pay their "average" price, you paid way too much.

I suppose it's accurate in the sense that you want to be paying in the lowest 10%.

Why would you pay the "average" price if you were looking for a "good" price? I would use the price they claim they can get you a car for. And their prices will differ by geography.

You will always find a "better" price after you pull the trigger....it never fails. I think the important thing is you chose wisely, you sound happy, and you didn't pay full MSRP.

Congratulations on your new car!
