Nothing.

At times, I regret owning a car and would just go back to my Superduty Full time.

I own the car now and I'll drive it (its a fun car!), but if it was stolen or totaled, I wouldn't replace it.

I test drove a Prius V model 3 this week. Same class as a JSW, slightly less acceleration, more storage, More legroom, similar price, same mileage (cheaper fuel too $$ per mile less), reliable manufacturer, no $800.00 DSG oil changes, oil you can buy anywhere, A/C that works, bluetooth that works, no leaking roof drains, windshield wipers you can get anywhere, dealers more places ( I can't say that they are better or not, but look at what we have now).
It's interesting you suggest the price of the Prius V is similar to a JSW while also mentioning the Prius V does not suffer leaking roof drains. Reason I say that is that I actually put an offer in on that particular Prius V (with Pano) before the JSW TDI was even on my radar last year. Thank goodness my offer was rejected because my next stop was VW where I found out just how damn expensive the Prius V with Pano roof really was compared to a JSW TDI. The Pano option on the Prius V turns out to be a $5000 option! because the only way it's available is through a "Technology package". A Prius V with Pano roof is a $35,000 car. That's about $8000 more than I paid for my 2013 JSW TDI with Pano and DSG.

I have only owned my JSW for just under a year now but I have yet to suffer any of the problem items you list above - knock on wood!

No theorizing here.

I just replaced my totaled '09 JSW with an identical (except for exterior color) '13.

I would have gotten the same color, but the deal was too good on the unit close to home, so I bought it.

I too test drove a Prius V, the experience for me was horrible! I just hated the way the thing whined up hills, and considering that I live and drive in the Montana mountains, I'm glad I didn't buy it!

Oh, and FYI on my 2013 JSW
-My AC works just fine
-My Bluetooth works incredibly well.
-Don't have a pano roof, so I can't speak to leaking drains.
Bottom line: It drives *so* much better, that there really isn't any comparison IMO.

I like my JSW but would go for a Touareg TDI. We only have one car and having some more room would be beneficial for home improvement projects. If someone was paying, I would look into a Cayenne TDI!

I have two non-TDIs, both of which I like a lot. Roof's off this one right now, perfect late summer weather. And it does manage 30 MPG.

And this one gets 32-35 on diesel, of course. Lovely 5 cylinder exhaust note.

I need a taxi sign for it.

Would you have more cargo room in the Touareg over the JSW? The specs dont' show that with either all seats in place or maximum cargo room. What I would like myself with the Touareg though is the additional space for people as the total interior volume is about 11 cubic feet more than the JSW.

Plan to get rid of my 2010 JSW TDI within the next week or two if I can get a fair trade for a 2013 Toyota Tacoma. I need a vehicle that is reliable, easy to maintain, and will last and the VW doesn't meet any of those criteria.

The TDI was great but just isn't my lifestyle. Glad I tried it. A truly great value.

I have a price on a Prius V model 3 (nav etc. no sunroof) dor less than I paid for my 2009 JSW. I had to buy the palno roof version to get the nav.
While the Prius V model 5 has the sunroof (which I don't want) it also has every other option including leather interior. It is much more expensive than the model 3.
There are drawbacks as in any choice other wise it would not be much od a problem.
The interior space is larger in the prius (over the JSW which is the only TDI I have intrest in). The JSW drives better, is quieter under acceleration.
The JSW uses more $$ per mile than the Prius and is less reliable and requires more service at a higher expense.
I just finished with changing the DSG oils and filter and adapting it with the VAGCOM.
Changed the engine oil and filter (from the top with Pela. then I pulled the drain plug to see how much oil was left in the sump. I got about 1/2 cup of oil which is about what I can suck out of the oil filter canister with the Pela.)
So onward another 10,000 miles for engine oil and 40,000 miles for DSG.
I plan to install a 2 micron HPFP return filter to protect the rest of the fuel system in case of a pump failure.
If I needed a replacement for the JSW I thik I would choose the Prius V - 3 for reliability, space and cost of operation.
If you factor in the additional cost of the diesel fuel the equivalent gas mileage would be around 32 MPG. The V gets around 40. Wins in $$$ per mile.
Other gas cars might be equal to the mileage of the JSW, but it is fun to have that low end torque!
I will stay with the JSW for now and just keep repairing and correcting engineering and construction shortcuts for the factory.
At least I don't have to look for another hobby to keep me busy.

I did a lot of research before buying TDI. I would never get a hybrid thinking maintenance would be "less expensive". Replacing the battery on one of those is more than a couple of services on my TDI. They are also not nearly as fun to drive. I love the JSW TDI for being the perfect option to fit my needs: fuel economy, fun to drive, all of the space and cargo room I need, top safety features, and with all of the options I want.

Anyway, I knew going in that diesel vehicles are more expensive to maintain than their gas counterparts. Same problem, one on gas, one on diesel, and the diesel will cost half again more to repair, maybe even twice as much. That's one of the reasons I bought the extended warranty on mine. In seven years, we'll see how the car is doing and go from there. I tend to drive my cars for a really long time, though, and as long as occasional repairs are still less expensive when averaged out than a new monthly payment, I expect I'll drive this car for seven more after the warranty goes. What I buy then will depend on what is available. I except the options to look a little different fourteen years down the road.

The Prius V Five with Pano that I test drove did NOT have leather at all but Toyota's version of pleather called Softex. I don't believe leather is an option on the Prius V in fact. Also the Five does not come with a pano, it is only available in the $5000 Tech option. In fact, I saw where a previous JSW owner in the Prius forum mentioned "I sold my 2010 Jetta TDI Sportwagen that had a panoramic sunroof. I miss it." Toyota is notorious for doing crap like this with their options package. Want the sunroof, fine, instead of $29,000 we now want $35,000! Buyer: "wait? all I want is the sunroof!" I felt pretty damn good being able to buy a JSW TDI with it's huge (non leaking thus far) Pano roof for the $29K MSRP ($27K actual before taxes). I didn't have to buy the nav option at all to get the pano (perhaps something was different in your first model year option, in addition to all the bugs you unfortunately ended up with?). As far as space? The Prius V has a whopping .4 cubic foot more of total cargo space (67.3 v 66.9) with all seats down and 1.5 cubic feet more with all seats up. It's not really that different in size to a JSW overall, though you do get a little more room up front and back in the form of shoulder room.

I don't know if you can get the Plano roof without the nav, but for the JSW you have to get the rood to get the nav.
I wanted the nav and no plano hole in the roof.
When I went to the dealer to check the roof has to be bought to get the nav package.
As to the battery for a prius and maintenance I have 165,000 miles and 11 years on the original battery in mine. I suspect maot are like that. Battery packs built up by matching batteries from wrecks to build "rebuilt packs for a lot less $$.
Having lived with a Prius for a long time I can say that there are a lot of misconceptions by the uninitiated.
You pay a premium for the technology of Diesel or Hybrid. The cost of ownership in my experience is in favor of the hybrid Toyota.
The tdi is more fun to drive and more expensive and less reliable.
You pays your money and takes your choice.

There was a nice piece on Consumer Reports via YouTube last week all about Hybrids. In a nutshell, they said regarding the battery that the Prius had one of the most trouble free batteries (of Hybrids) AND that replacements were readily available used for as little as $300! That shocked me. They also said that Honda Hybrid batteries have proven to be problematic/ not reliable (also a surprise). Their conclusion to about Hybrid versus Diesel (as most here would expect) is that Diesel is superior for Hwy/ distance driving (fuel economy wise) and Hybrids for short trips/ city/ stop and go. A Diesel Hybrid would be my ideal.

Couple thoughts: From what I've read, concern about replacing the batteries on a Prius is not a reason to stay away from the car. They're lasting well past the 150K projected service life, some as long as 300K. Second, all manufacturers bundle options into packages: Audi is notorious for this, as is BMW. Sometimes they also offer stand-alone options, but sometimes not. Ask someone with a 2012 or later Golf who wanted HIDs.

Well, I replaced one tdi with another and bought what is now my third about 18 months later. If I had to replace one today, I'd probably go with a Passat tdi. Maybe the ram 1500 diesel.

i'd love to get a 91 vanagon. As a hobby car, it would be a lot of fun to rebuild. But it sure would take an investment of money, time, and money, and then some more money.

wonder if I could put in a TDI? :)

If I were to replace my sportwagen, I'd get an audi b8 s4. which is exactly what I did 21 months ago. Of course, here I am now considering getting back into a sportwagen again, so that might not have been the best move. :)

If cost was not a factor, a Passat TDI. Given the same circumstances (not wanting to spend the extra $3k for a Passat), I'd go with another Jetta TDI.

Grand Cherokee with the 3.0L diesel. Is there a chance I could keep my JSW too?
