I think I'd scan the code and investigate to see if the contacts can be cleaned or if there is some obvious chafing somewhere. I figure that's worth ~60/hour.

If the fault is for a driver's and/or passenger's side, side airbag, there is a bulletin on this on how to fix it. Joe

There is a connector under the seat toward the back. It has 3 wires in it. Make sure you use a self sealing heat shrink butt splice. You cut out the connector and splice in a 4 inch section of wire for each wire that was in the connector.

Brown to Brown
Blue to Green
Black to white

Wire part# 000 979 010 (0.5 mm wire 12 inches)
Butt connector # 111 971 941A (x6)

TSB# 69-08-02

Warranty time to do one seat is 1 hour. To do both seats it pays 1.7 hours. A lot of dealers(not just VW) take warranty time + 40% to get customer pay time. This is also more or less the formula that Alldata, Mitchell, ect use to determine the flat rate time for repairs.

Before you do this disconnect the battery. Before reconnecting the battery after the repair turn the ignition to the on position. The reason you turn on the ignition is in case you made a mistake the airbag deploys when you are in front of the car not inside turning on the ignition.

Next time I do one I could post pics, but I can not/won't post TSB's.

Hope this helps someone!

Sorry, you lost me at "You bring your car to the dealer". The money you spent at the dealership for the fuel filter replacement should have been a heads up (i.e see your subsequent post where you wrote they charged you $350 for this service). My advice is to read up on this site in combination with finding a guru in your area for these types of events. Good luck.

Seeing how it is a 2006 car I would tell the dealer it should be under warranty.

But first I would come to the TDICLUB and ask what I should do to fix it. These guys know everything and I will never go to a dealer for anything.

You paid $350 for a fuel filter and took it to the same dealer and paid $412 to plug in a wire or whatever they did and you want to know what others would pay. Next time come here first.

It would be really interesting if you would post copys of your invoices, in their entirety, so we could see exactly what they did, what parts were replaced and the actual costs.
Asking the cost to replace a "faulty wire harness" is a pretty open ended question. To get a fair answer, you need to be much more specific.

I would just love to know what the dealership mechanics' are making on this kind of a overcharge. And how much they rake in over the course of a year with these obnoxious charges?
We could have a sticky for Newbies to post their overcharges so we can get an Idea on it. But then again most of them are not going to let us know how much they were taken for.

Checking All-data, I get a parts and labor price of about $95 to replace the fuel filter. $350 for a fuel filter is so far off the charts there has to be more to it than that. Show us the invoice please. I'd be really shocked if it were true.

I like to share this when I see posts like this...

I've seen a customer at my local dealer walk away with a $200 bill for a single glow plug. This was his third he'd had replaced at that price and made a comment about how he knew he would be in to have the last one replaced soon.

You guys are tough...

It wasn't just the fuel filter.

I brought it in telling them the car was sputtering and I wanted them to change the fuel filter (after I was advised that was the problem by members on this site).

Wel, they proceeded to do a diagnosic fee (even though I told them what was wrong) and then "flushed the lines", and verified electrical was ok with fuel pump.

YES THAT IS WHY DO MY OWN OIL CHANGES, FILTER CHANGES, TIRE ROTATIONS etc. They[dealers] totally rip you off.

As far as the air bags.. just not to comfortable playing around with something that can open faster than an eyeblink...am I ignorant about fixing airbags and how they work...you better believe it.

I read the owners manual and it stated bags may deploy without notice when the malfunction light is on. So I got nervous and brought it to the dealer. I was going to have to basically sign off on taking the car without reapiring the airbags and just didn't want to take the chance.

Parts on this repair cost about $50. LAbor was about 350. Did I get ripped sure - it happens- trust me somewhere sometime you got ripped off when you payed for something.

Next time I'll try and post up and see if you all can help.
So there you have it...

THey found something else wrong. Climate control flap (motor maybe) is bad. I asked for an estimate....READY

:)

$1,100.

I'll live with the 5 seconds of buzzing until I find an Independent.
