so you can start it with no fuel in the pump? i guess if you dont do it often the damage will be minimal.

I'm talking about the Tandem pump you see above. What I am reading here is that due to the ducting in the pump, the pump will not run dry even if the tank is empty. I think it's that FM stuff.

I think you have a PD (2004 or newer) without an injection pump to worry about. I started mine after a fuel filter change without filling the filter. It didn't take too much cranking.

d2305,
There is a reason why you didn't have much cranking to do. There is a pump that pumps fuel in the lines in your fuel tank. It keeps your fuel lines from the tank to the engine primed. As oppose to those A4/A3/B4 pumps, where the pump is right by the engine and gets air.

Yes, I found that out from reading here. I think soacemonkey was worried about harming his non-existant injection pump, if I was reading the posts right. BTW have you done a timing belt change on a PD yet?

No but I have a few people that will let me work on their car when they get due. They understand that the first time is always the longest so they can wait all day while I wrench. According to Drivbiwire and HermTDI, it really isn't much difference and a guy like me should figure it out. I have the Bentley instructions so just need to get my hands dirty someday.
