Do NOT do a SMF on a CR 6speed. Unless you plan on doing a swap in the future. Also, if someone swaps a 5speed in just to use a SMF, they may need to get mentally checked out.
i would swap a 5 speed in, with the taller gearing and brace only if the TDI i bought had a broken transmission haha. otherwise it's a total downgrade imo

Yeah that 5th gear swap everyone did on the ALH's to bring the RPMs down is apparently popular. Or atleast around here.

if you mess up your six speed box by using a single mass flywheel (like i did) you may be forced to go with the 5 speed swap unless you want to use a junkyard transmission. I got one of the last three factory refurbished units in the entire USA a couple of years ago. There were no new ones available anywhere at that time so I'm sure the pickings are even slimmer now.

Why do these release bearings generally fail Is it a wear issue or a manufacturing issue? Particularly interested in the case of a hydraulic failure.

Im going to say mostly wear issue. Also depending on how the driver uses the clutch if they ride it or not. A chattering DMF also doesnt help either when its vibrating loosely.

My wife just had the clutch go to the floor on her 2016 Gas Sportwagen... After recovering, it seems to behave normally - for now... but... I assume the writing's on the wall and we'll need to have the job done... not a pleasant prospect...

Ugh - I'd check the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir to see if some disappeared. But yeah....doesn't sound promising.

Fluid level's fine... One can hope it's "only" the master cylinder, but given the history of these cars, it's likely the slave... this car is turning into a money pit... If only I could find another 2003 TDI wagon that's not rotted out...
