Looks like the load shifted in the picture. Myth Busters did a better job of securing the load to the front frame of the car. Compare all the twine in front of the windshield in the clip versus the picture.

Once upon a time, when my wife and I bought our first house we used my '86 Jetta to move. I had more packed in/on my Jetta than in my Dad's pick up. She still had power to drive on the 401 with a couch and two dressers strapped to the roof and packed to the roof inside. I had to climb into the window since everything was tied and packed together real tight. It was also a fun car to drift around corners on dirt roads, and one hill you could get all 4 tires off the ground. That was the best car ever built!

My first car was a 96 Jetta and I was a teenager so I'm surprised it didn't break more than it did.
Auto trans, impress other youngsters, rev it up to 5k, slam it in D and hang on...

Only major problem was speedo wouldn't work anymore, worked for me though, it didn't add up km's either. Turned out a shaft in the transmission had its teeth stripped. I wonder how :p

We have all pushed the boundaries of what VW recommends, and I figured this would be a great place to collect those stories. Extreme abuse, neglect, acts of stupidity and adventures are welcome. Themes criminal in nature are not encourage such as ”I was Drunk/High/wearing a straight jacket while driving on…..” is not acceptable, nor “I used my Jetta as a getaway car while robbing a Bank/Gas station/ liquor store” But using it as a getaway vehicle for your wedding/ buddies wedding / in laws house is fully acceptable.

To start, I tested the Jetta’s GVWR on the weekend. The car with trailer weighed in at 3340Kg (7340lbs) when I went across the scales at the dump (and weighed 1380kg less when leaving).

Let the stories begin.
Took my car to a VW Dealership for an Oil change once....never again. NEVER.

Yesterday..

Broke the oil dipstick tube changing the oil on the 2k TDI ..
Wearing bulky thermo gloves (should have waited until today when it warmed up) and hand tightening the oil filter cap and my hand slipped and crack ..

Go to the motor I have in the garage I haven had a time to tear apart yet for parts and it's already broken ..
Wait until today to check the other parts car I have parked at my parents .. and snap the tab off right off the bat .. but get the tube out .. go to wipe it down and it breaks into 3 pecieces .. S@*t ..

So the car is down until I can get the $8 part tomorrow .. but on the plus side it's my wifes car and she gets to the drive the 07 Uplander .. @ 13L per 100km .

My first VW, 25 years ago, was a 1972 bug with a Baja kit. It had some off road tires on it, but wasn't really built like a prerunner. I drove it a bit like it was! :D
There was an unimproved road that doubled as a snowmobile trail in the winter and I used to fly down that road like Robby Gordon at Dakar (or so I thought). I got a bit carried away one evening and took a turn off the trail to a different area. I buried it in the mud in a field behind our high school that was part of the FFA test plots. I then proceeded to get my Dad's full size van stuck while trying to get it close enough to the car to pull it out. Friends of the family came out several hours later with a 4wd truck and A LOT of chain. When they first arrived, one of the guys said "if we all stand on top of the car, maybe it'll sink completely and we won't have to try to pull it out."
My next VW was a 1980 Scirocco S. I never did anything stupid in that car.

I like the dolly as I have a setup that apply's the brake to the car im towing. stopping is the only thing that scares me towing a car that's heavier then it. Ive got to be one a few FWD sedans with a trailer brake controller mounted over the radio.

Maybe not the stupidest thing ever, but I won $5 on a bet with my friend for getting 15 12' 2x4's to his house in one trip with my car. And yes, that is duck tape holding them in just incase you were wondering :D

Car keep surprising me with how much crap you can shove in it if you really try.
