I believe that it is the actuator valve on the EGR cooler. Can someone please confirm this for me?

Also, it looks like you can just unbolt it and replace the actuator. Can this be done. It seems that people are saying that the cooler has to be replaced and every diagram that I have seen so far does not seem to be this exact same setup. They look slightly different like the actuator is located in a different spot.

I am taking the car in tomorrow and I would like to have a little knowledge on the part.

Thanks.

The EGR cooler leaks exhaust, there is a flapper valve on the drivers side that throttles flow through the cooler, the throttle plate is suported by a shaft, the shaft turned inside a bushing, this is the part that wears out and causes an exhaust leak.

There is a thread open right now where, the members were trying to design a bushing replacement..

If you stay with the OEM design, you will be buying another down the road as well. There are other alternatives as well.

Thanks.

So if I am understanding you correctly, it's not so much the cooler that wears out but the bushing on the cooler that the actuator flapper shaft goes in to? And because this bushing goes out, you have to buy a whole new cooler?

So the actuator is probably okay?

It looked like the cooler was pretty easy to replace. Am I wrong? In a lot of other threads it seemed that people were cleaning out the pipes and removing the intake manifold. Is that not necessary here?

Am I correct in thinking that I can order the new cooler and unbolt it. Clamp off the coolant lines and bolt back in the new cooler, hook back up the coolant lines and replenish any lost G12?

I was talking with the service rep at the dealer I bought mine from, He was telling me that they are also finding a number of these coolers leaking coolant internally. Cooler has to be replaced for that fix. They are starting to see them fail @ around 70K miles.

I'm almost there. YAH!?

ugh...after finally taking car to shop, this is my problem. I made it to 100k, though. Mostly highway miles so not sure if that is reason. Anyone ever come up with a fix if one does not have a machine shop handy?

None......Yet???
You can replace it with a new one $$$$$. Or you can do an EGR delete, which is what I did, for about $1 in metal and some elbow grease. Do a search for EGR on the board and you'll get the instructions.

Most likely not, because once you've an exhaust leak there, it's only a matter of time until the oily crud and the heat from the exhaust damages the rubber diaphragm inside the actuator to the point where it will tear, and then the actuator will not work anymore either.
