What Diesels Fuels to Use?

Hello,
I have a 2011 Jetta TDI Highline and I am wondering what brand/grade of diesel everyone is using.

Does anyone know what Cetane Number is recommended for these engines? I live on the East Coast, Nova Scotia, and don't have a huge selection of stations to pick from.

Thanks

Syd, welcome to Fred's! Wouldn't you just run with Irving? Do you have a broad selection of "grades" or is everyone selling the same thing??

Most diesel has a cetane rating of 40 or above. I'd focus on a supplier that does a large volume of business so you are not getting old fuel. You may want to consider enhancing lubricity with an additive or biodiesel up to 5%, if possible. Enjoy the Jetta.

Thanks Diesel.
I requested information from the various oil companies around here but have only heard back from Irving so far.
Their response was "All of our diesel is Ultra low Sulfur and meets the minimum cetane number is 40, which is the Canadian spec."
I was hoping to find something with a bit higher Cetane Number then 40.

BTW, what is Fred's?

Fred is the guy who owns this place ;)

Sad to say, but the fuel is what it is and can vary from batch to batch. There's little the end user can do to alter that fact.

I choose my diesel based on the volume of business at the station when I buy my fuel. If a station does not seem to sell much diesel, it is likely that the diesel it does cell may be old stock, may have contamination problems etc.

Another option on which there are many threads in other areas of TDI forums is to throw in some additives which serve two purposes. One is to boost Cetane levels and the second is to prevent gelling at lower temps, although you guys on the east coast don't get too much of the -30C weather like we can get in Ottawa and other parts of the country.

I add a few ounces of Power Service additive with every fill up. Its available at CTC. There are other brands but PS is readily available and reasonably priced.

Check the diesel pump for last transaction. If you see people constantly buying 50L-100L of diesel at that pump (I am talking passenger car station), it must be a good place to fill up. Ask other TDI drivers in your area where they fuel up. There got to be hundreds of various VW TDIs running in your local area. I use mostly Shell V-Power Diesel and very frequently I would bump into another TDI driver at the same station. It's always nice talking to other TDI drivers (mostly men) about our cars.

I have seen on other parts of the forum that JetA fuel could be used on the older 1.9TDIs.

However I couldn't find any information on the 2.0TDI. Will the 2011 Jetta tdi be able to run on it (with some additives of course to lubricate it or a mix even with regular diesel)? I am suspecting all types of sensors will shoot off or something along the lines?

Anyone have any knowledge on this?

you have access to pearson's tarmac to refuel with that JetA stuff? just go to your local petro-canada, and if you feel like you need it, add stanadyne or powerservice, or some of that liquimoly additive from perjad's shop.

I don't personally have access but I know someone that does. And he said people drive them on their older jettas - so I am worried that the 2.0 TDI might have sensors that will go wild if they sense fuel that is a bit different or something. Again, I am not an expert with cars just a do it yourself type of guy.
Having said that are these products lubricants? Is there a formula for what combination to use them with or does it say on the products themselves? And I am guessing you believe, from your response, there shouldn't be an issue running that fuel?

Also, I am not trying it out little by little because you need to get it in bulk (from my understanding) and I don't want to get it if it won't work.

i was being a little facetious when talking about pumping JetA fuel at the airport. The new cars explicitely state using ULSD fuel, this typically being Diesel 2 from on-road pumps. I wouldn't bother with red died diesel either. As Suncor Energy bought Petro-Canada, you will likely get good diesel with a cetane level of around 46 from your local pumps. My understanding is that the level of lubricity is greater in Sunoco's Gold Diesel, but try finding a Sunoco now within the GTA....

The products I mentioned also increase the cetane level of the diesel, increases mileage, power, and cleans the injectors at the same time. A good thing. Use as directed.

Change your fuel filter every 30K kms too. And buy Diesel Purge and prime the entire filter before connecting back to the car. There is more useful info in relevant sections of tdiclub.com. Happy travelling :)

Any station with high turnover and sells B5 is A-OK in my book. :) Enjoy the new ride!

i use only stations that i see have lot of diesel fill ups, everytime i go to a station i have to wait for couple of minutes so i can get a pump. This means that they go thru lot of fuel and hopefully it could mean less condensation and water at the bottom of the tank. I dont add any additives, and usually i dont pay for V-power or Gold unless its at a good price.

I'm going to change the fuel filter on the 2010 Golf this tuesday, really interested to see the condition of it. its got 30000kms on it and 13 months of driving.

Ive only put one tank in my 2011 and i used shell ultra v power and it seem to bump my mileage up from the tank the car came with well over 100 kms more so far.

You guys seem to get much better mileage then I do. I've tried several different stations but I'm still lucky to get 800Km from a tank. Most times I'm getting mid to high 700's. Mind you, I drive most of the time in "Sport Mode" (more fun) and I do tend to drive a bit aggressive some times. I've read here that that is the best way to break in a new deisel.

VW claims that the fuel consumption is the same between the manual and the DSG.
they don't consider the fact that there is parasidic loss in efficiency when coming to a stop in a DSG. in my 6spd manual, i throw the gearbox into neutral, relieving any parasidic losses.

also, how much for a rebuilt DSG box? how much for a clutch job? what sort of pains are there every 40K miles on the DSG fluid change? DSG just didn't do it for me, even not knowing how to drive standard before I bought my new 6spd highline.

I've owned Japanese sports cars(Supra) and American(Camero) that were manual shift but this DSG is just as much fun to drive, if not more!
BTW, parasidic losses in this tranny are so small you wouldn't be able to notice it on a tank of fuel.

highline is the best of the best version in canada. it's like an SEL model in USA. might have slight differences, check vw.com versus vw.ca. tire fitment is:

195/65/r15
205/55/r16
225/45/r17
