What did your wife said when you got the TDI?

That could be funny to know how your wife reacted to her/your TDI when she first saw it, either at the dealer or your home.

When my wife was on the dealer floor and opened the trunk she said " Gee we could save on hotel bills on our next holiday with this thing... I bet we could both sleep in this thing:p

Then, a rep came in and told her the TDI is so green it's exhaust contains 90% of water (don't know if it's true) She loudly replied "SOLD":p

Just wanted to share...

There is no way he actually said that. Ha ha ha ha ha ha.

I can't decide which is worse, that he actually said that or someone believed it.

Think about it. If 90% of the TDI exhaust was water, there would be torrent of water coming out of the exhaust the whole time it was running. That would be funny to imagine.

Well, I guess he meant water vapor considering the exhaust gases temperature... which is believable taking into account that an engine mostly pumps air which contains a lot of water vapor ( humidity)

GF talking to a friend at a dinner party about it:

GF:"He has a new car, it's a diesel and gets over 45mpg"
Me:<grins proudly>
Friend:"what kind of car is it?"
GF:"It's a silver one"
Me: <plants face squarely in palm of hand>

I was supposed to buy a used '06, but my wife convinced me to test drive a new '09 (which she'd secretly tested a few days before). A week later I signed the papers on a brand new 2009 Jetta TDI.

TDI # 1 (2000 NB TDI) = "Thats pretty cute, will you teach me how to drive a stick?" (I almost shed a tear I was so happy)

Beetle got sold to fund the purchase of our 2003 Eurovan once we found out we were having Twins...

I found TDI # 2 (2001 GL Golf 2 door) a year later= "ya, ill be driving that one whenever I can, since I can now drive a Manual, but you have to sell the 1989 GTI 16v to get it. (Party went to a good owner on these forums from MI)

TDI # 3 (2003 GLS Jetta Wagon) = "yes, you can buy it, but to do so you have to get rid of the golf, I thought you were happy with it, its gonna be mad at you...you just got it the way you wanted it"

Me re: buying the wagon.. "we have 4 children, having them climb into the back seat wasnt so much fun any more. and I like the wagon, and have been looking at them for months.. and besides ITS SUCH A GOOD DEAL!!! look at all it comes with!"

granted, the wagon has some growing pains that I need to remedy. but all in all, I am not disappointed with the purchase. cannot wait to get it to see master Jeff.

mine said "sign here stating you are not buying another car for the next 4 years!"

i usually change cars every 6 months ;)
In so many words, my girlfriend had the exact same message for me.

June 2007: 2007 Saab 9-3 (Traded 2001 Jeep Wrangler)
Feb 2009: 2003 Dodge Ram (had both Saab and Ram)
Nov 2009: 2009 Infiniti G37x (Traded Saab and Ram)
Jan 2011: 2011 Jetta TDI (Traded Infiniti)

Not quite your frequency, but nonetheless a slow-down is necessary!

Caught the Diesel fever 14 months ago when I bought my first Diesel (335d). The awesome power and excellent FE convinced me that I have to get another Diesel to replace my other vehicle (a gas guzzling SUV that swallows gas @ 12.5L/100KM).

When the 2011 Jetta TDI was out I went and test drove it and knew that it's the one to replace the gaser.
I spent a few months brain washing her on the benefits of the TDI and how it can save over $350.00/month in gas with the amount of driving I do.

Last Monday while she was at work I went in and signed a lease for the new Jetta TDI but was not sure how to break it to her without her freaking out!
I waited till the next morning and broke the news to her during breakfast.
I apologized to her for not telling her first but felt that it's time to let the SUV go and make the complete switch to Diesel.
She bought the idea and asked me about the lease deal.
I told her it's for 48 months @ 4.9% interest, $0 down &$387/month and we can sell the SUV privately.
She said "What's the financing cost?"
I said "$3,998.00".
She said "Are you stupid or what? Why pay 4.9& interest when your $ is sitting in your bank earning <1% interest? Go back to the dealer and trade in the SUV and pay cash for the difference!"
I said "Yes Dear":D
Tonight the TDI is sharing the garage with the 335d. I bet the two have lots of stories to tell each other!
I hope they both learn to get along....he he...

There are just too many to list....
My wife cried, because we traded one of the pump-sucking 2.0L '95 Golfs we had in on the '98 Jetta TDI. She was sad to see her Golf go (she also cried when we traded her '88 Golf in on the '95... so....). But she was convinced it would 'feel' like our '91 [non turbo] diesel Jetta. Which actually does not really 'feel' like much (you have to look at the speedo to actually know you are gaining speed).

Then she drove the new TDI. She loved it. Then I put an Upsolute chip in... she nearly crashed it backing out of the driveway. She got a little afraid of it then. Then I put some T4 2.5L injectors in it. She smoked the tires multiple times, and nearly refused to drive it in the rain. Then I put a straight pipe on it, a modded pump, and tweaked it a little. The she was a LOT afraid of it (it could break the tires loose from 40 MPH). Then I detuned it and made it more driveable again when the first child came along.

Then we sold it (she cried, again...) and bought the Passat she still drives now. I won't make her cry again, but I did RC this one. :D

Although lately, she has driven my Golf several times, and remarked how well it runs...

Thanks Dude.

Now this old geezer has to start planning ahead and come up with the justification to buy the 2012 Passat TDI... but that's another story...
Maybe I should wait till the Passat TDI Wagon is out as I may just have to sleep in it for a few nights till she cools down!
... wait! The wagon will certainly have lots of room to bring her shopping for furniture and stuff that will not fit in the Jetta or 335d!:D

You're a lucky man since you've already converted your SO to driving a TDI.

Mine is also a Diesel convert by now.
Especially when I had to let her have her way in outfitting her dream kitchen in our new home with the most expensive appliances + Granite tops. Her built-in fridge costs 1/2 of the TDI ($14,000.00) not to mention her wall ovens/micor-wave/warming tray + fancy cook range! Total costs of over $30K.

Now that she has her dream kitchen I think I should plan to spring my next surprise when I bought my dream Diesel car!:D:D:D

I've found a really effective way for determining when a salesmen doesn't know what they are talking about. Usually it's when their lips are moving.:D

With my wife, when I talk anything technical, her eyes role back in her head and she goes into a coma. When she got her last car, her ONLY real criteria was that it had crank windows but then she setled for one of the cheapest cars on the planet and guess what, it had electric windows.

Not my wife, but my significant other:

Me: Hmm, I think I'll get a Jetta TDI
Him: Is it as gay as your mini cooper?
Me: No
Him: Is it bigger than your mini cooper?
Me: What is smaller?
Him: Good point

Now that I have had it and we drive it, and the awesome gas mileage

Him: This is SO much better than your mini cooper. And comfy. I like it.
Me: Me too!
Him: Pull over, I wanna drive
Me: *success, new road trip car! Rather than his pathfinder... though I love that car too, this just saves money*

I dont know about your house, but in mine there is no road between the kitchen and the laundry room, so theres no way she's driving.

Jb, You're going to be in deep trouble to implythat your wife's place is in the Kitchen & Laundry Room!:D

Make sure you take her out for a romantic night out on Valentine's Day in your new Jetta...;)

My wife is Lebanese, I don't have to imply, she would rather be in the kitchen or laundry room.

But, yes I will drive us to dinner. :)

My wife just said: "looks like you just bought another VW SquareBack". Both of us drove VW SquareBacks (Air cooled, Type 3 ) back in the 1970s when we first met. Mine was a 1968 and hers was a 1967 - both blue. I later bought a junked 1971 and put pieces of the '68 and '71 together and made one good car.

Have Fun!

Don
