Newbie here, at least w/ TDI's. owned 3 of the older Diesel VW's. Just bought 1999 TDI Beetle w/ 98,900 miles for 3800$. Timing belt never changed (did it myself), had hard starting issue, but was able to do the 'relay' wiring/coolant sensor fix and now starts and runs like a top. Other than having to put on new front brake disks and pads, Passenger window has issues closing, a little weirdness in the door lock area, blown out speakers (junk speakers), a little cigarette smoke smell in the interior and a few burn marks on seats, the car is in great shape! I'm loving it. My wife does too. It was a great upgrade from my 84 Jetta diesel. Weird, though how similar the construction and feel between the two cars are. I would have to say, in my opinion, the older German made Jetta is better quality than the Mexican made Beetle.
