$17,000 for my 02' in 04'. It had 12,000 on it when I bought it and it just turned 145,000. I've been on the fence about selling it or trading it in but after the $$$ I've put into it lately I don't know if I should. New hubcaps, 2 new tires, alignment, struts, shocks, rear springs, driver seat rebuild, brakes and rotors at all 4 corners, timing belt not too long ago, water pump, alternator and a few things I'm sure I forgot about. Practically new now. My new Sirius will be here Tuesday too!!
Decisions, decisions!!

99.5 Jetta TDI
There are some great finds on here. I just bought my first TDI but I am not new to diesels (I own 4 powerstrokes). I was looking for one so my kids could drive it to school (50miles round trip to the high school). 17mpg in the 94.5 powerstroke was killing my fuel budget.
I ran across this 99.5 Jetta GL, 5spd. AC doesn't work, takes a bit of cranking to get her fired and it has 196k on it. Paid 2800 and it came with the Haynes and Bentley manuals.
It runs like a top and I can't wait to start learning from ya'll on this forum.

Released from Dieselgate Purgatory in May 2017 “SCHWARTZ” ’15 Sportwagen TDI SEL 6-MT; Gone, but not forgotten are “HANS” ’09 Sportwagen TDI SE 6-MT with RocketChip Stage 1; and “KLAUS” ’99.5 J
IN Aug 2010, I paid $23K for a 2009 JSW TDI with 25,000 miles. Yeah, I know many will say I paid too much. Flawless paint and interior (still smells new), panoramic sunroof, iPod dock, the complete package. Now looking to sell my '99.5 Jetta TDI...to make room in the garage. I wish I had a family member to sell it to - it's a great car. I hope the new one is even better.

What I paid for 2003 Jetta Wagon

This May (2010) I paid $10,700 for a 2003 GLS wagon, manual with 54,000 miles. Had to fly from MN to NH to get it and drive back. Stopped at Niagra Falls. Slept in the back. My great summer adventure. I love this car!

I consider this to have been a pretty good deal. I have seen similar cars sell for about $13,000.

Just finding the much covetod 2003 wagon, manual is tough. Low miles is really, really tough!

I paid $8500 after taxes and everything for a 2003 Jetta GLS 5spd with 115'000 km on it. Dirt cheap compared to the $10 000+ for >250'000 km models that were floating around at the same time I purchased (Feb 2010).

I've had to put a lot of maintenance into it already though including shocks/struts, various A/C components, cooling fans, serpentine belt, oil...I'm beginning to think the previous owner did absolutely no maintenance.

2006 Jetta TDI w/Package 1 - 114,000 - $10,000

2006 Jetta TDI w/Package 1 - 114,000 - $10,000. Searched for about 2 months on these until I made and offer on eBay Motors. They have it listed for $10,999. I made an offer of $10,000 and they took it. Only needed a CV boot to pass Maryland inspection. I have to drive to New Jersey to get this. Next one that I could find on Autotrader, eBay, and Cars.com was $11,900 for 2006 Jetta.

I paid $4700.00 + tax ($5321.00) for a used 2001 2 door Golf TDI 5 spd with 224,000 kms (139,000 miles). Paid for it sight unseen (had my sister and her bf check it out for me), sent the money then flew one way from Edmonton to Toronto and drove it back over the labour day weekend.

Just got my out of province inspection done (only needed a ball joint) and the timing belt is due pretty soon.

Started losing power 2nd day of the trip home (might be the turbo) but so far I am pleased.

I just paid $8k for an '03 Jetta wagon TDI 5spd with 160k miles. It is a one-owner car that runs amazing. I'm very happy with finally finding the car I wanted (and only a 2 hour drive away).

I paid 7800 for my '04 Jetta PD with 127k miles. It was in perfect condition as far as exterior and interior leather go. I replaced the timing belt, clutch & flywheel, lift pump, windshield and a few misc things. Total now is up to about 9300.

2003 Jetta Wagon GLS
I bought a 2003 Jetta Wagon GLS that had been totalled and partially rebuilt for $3750. Had to change the wheels back to stock, buy new tires, replace the windshield, glow plug wiring harness, temp sensor, replaced instrument cluster, rewire the replaced doors, clean the intake manifold but otherwise it's a great little car... 5 speed... not crazy about that... still has lower rocker damage and a crunched rear quarter panel. but it's easily worth 2x what I paid for it now, about 155,000 miles on it. Prefer driving it over my '91 300D. Thinking about finding another ALH TDI with an AT, despite the weakness... or upgrading the springs so it doesn't change level when I shift... :) http://johnmeister.com/DIESELS/tdi/JEM_6927_tdi-300d_2010-08-08.jpg

2 months ago I bought a 2000 Jetta TDI with 150k for $3000. Ran very weak had original timing belt, plugged intake and snow screen. Runs very good now. The poor guy I bought it from just had a intercooler installed($600) and was told he needed a turbo (he didn't).

Just bought a 2000 New Beetle TDI with 180k miles on it for $600. :D It is a auto, not too stoked on that. But all it needed to get it running..... drum roll....... tightening of the negative battery terminal. Needs a good cleaning and AC work. Seems like it's the fan control mechanism as I've already replaced the resistor pack. Other than that it drives well, slight noise from front strut mount/bearings.

Gotta love young college girls ;)

In that situation, I would contact the seller, tell her what was wrong with the car and offer to give her the deal back.

Edited to add:

Just so you understand where I'm coming from. I have an 18 year old daughter in college. She's just purchased her first car, which took her two years to save up for. I would hope she encounters people in her life who would help her get along safely in the world rather than exploit her naiveness.

Best wishes,
Jerry

I second Jerry's recommendation. It's one thing to get a good deal, but in this case I would offer the car back to the young girl who obviously didn't know any better. But that's just my thoughts on it.

She had a good idea what was wrong with it and was completely over putting money into it. She droveup in a newish car and was happy to sell it. The bug had been sitting unattended, somewhat abandoned, in the parking lot of her PAST apartment for about 5 months an hadn't been registered since last year.
If I felt that she needed or wanted the car back I'm am the guy that would do that. I pay it forward no worries.

Oh and she called her mom before taking my offer.

That sounds a little more above board, then.

The information you gave in your original post gave me a cold chill.

Congratulations on a terrific deal.

Best wishes,
Jerry

As a matter of curiosity, what color is it?

I've quite warmed up to these TDI New Beetles. Don't have anyone who needs one right now (or the funds to pay for it), but I'm enjoying watching what y'all are doing with them.

Best wishes,
Jerry
