Yeah, I like those rims. They look super light.

Rotated my tires, checked the pressure in all four and gave the car a good inside cleaning before I head up to Grand Marais, MN tomorrow.

Sportwagen alternator failed at 131k.
No time to fix myself, dealer wanted $2800 to replace.
Limped the car an hour to Austin to my mechanic there... cost 400 for a fcpeuro Bosch alt and 600 in labor. Much better deal.

What I did... finally got my JSW back, after being at my friend's body shop since April or May of last year. I literally told him to take his time, and he did. If he wasn't listing the body shop/property for sale in January, he'd still have the car there (less insurance to pay).

The sad part? I like how my Golfs drive better, having used them exclusively for the past 1.5 years.

just replaced my battery after 4 years on this one. I am darned impressive due to being in Central Florida, they are notorious to go dead on me every 2-3 years intervals from the old 2011 JSW I bought new and this 2014 JSW and our 2015 Passat..

just bought an AGM battery this time, she starts up easier than before. I can see the difference, alternator is not doing its job efficiently due being original at 205k miles. T-Belt time is knocking at my door so that alternator will go as well. I have his brand new alternator @Mozambiquer and will install it.

That's one reason I like Autozone Duralast Gold and AGM batteries, especially post-pandemic; Autozone almost never tests batteries anymore, and if you insist, they'll just swap it out. So I can get by with fresh batteries every 8-12 months.

What I did today - brake fluid flush (though I'll take care of the slave cylinder at a later date), topped off air in the tires, and got rid of my sh!tty towing springs, and put the Neuspeed sport springs back in. Still need to get the battery replaced at VatoZone, as it doesn't hold a full charge anymore.

yep I got rid of the towing springs as well. went back to the stock springs but not OEM. its under Lesjofors brand. dont trust OEM springs, they break left and right lately.

With towing springs, the car sits like one of those paratransit vans to tranport the elderly/disabled. The ride quality was total sh!t.

So VatoZone didn't replace my battery, and I stuck it on a tender all night. They have a new assistant manager that said the battery tested good with a 2% state of charge, after having been on the tender previously. So we'll see how long it lasts, or I just take it to another store to get a fresh replacement - ideally a store where the (female) manager flirts with me (yes, it's happened).

Sh!t, I wish. But I have a ton of replacements under my phone number.
Don't get me started on their alternators. I'm surprised the alternator in DSOL has lasted as long as it has. Same for the truck. During COVID, VatoZone was out of stock on the stock 7.3 alternators, so they gave me a free courtesy upgrade to the ambulance alternator, which I think is like 230 amps or something? Probably the only thing keeping my crappy 2018 Walmart NeverStart batteries still going in the F450. But still, that too has been replaced. The stock 7.3 alternator was replaced I think 3 times previously, and same for the TDI alternator (but at least it's free). Best part is the managers have no clue how to reliably hook them up to test them in the store, so they just defect the old ones.

I haven't had a problem with OEM springs ever breaking, though if I were still dating my ex, with all the weight she gained, that would put those springs to the test REAL fast!

This makes me fearful for my Golf R springs. Any OE replacement for the Golf R springs? I like how the car rides and how it sits currently and I have absolutely no intention to go back to stock springs.

Got my JSW back from the shop about an hour ago. Had a Nissan rental for a week and hated every second of it. Shop did a great job replacing the driver's door and mirror. They even cleaned the interior and the engine bay. Semi overtaking me on the left did not see me and crossed over into my lane. Due to a car immediately to my right I was unable to avoid getting run into but I was able to weave over a little to the right, stand on the brakes, and hit the horn. He didn't even know he had hit me and I had to chase him down (ala the white bronco chase) to get his attention and get him to pull over. To his credit he did pull over and when he got out of his truck he was very apologetic I kind of felt bad for him and I had to calm him down. I told him there's a reason we call it an accident and not an "on purpose". It is not like he was driving crazy or having road rage - he just made a mistake.

While the car is fixed my back is another story. I had spinal cord surgery two years ago in December and that has never really gone back to 100%. Been dealing with some significant pain for a couple of weeks now but seeing a doctor to get that under control.

This past weekend I added a Whitbread CP4 Bypass block to the HPFP (246,000 miles on the stock pump). I also added a Wix24470 filter base (trimmed) and 5 micron Baldwin filter as a return filter before fuel gets back to factory filter. I'll take some photos soon. This is essentially the old 2 micron tech Pureflow/Contain flow setup but without the super nice aluminum filter head secured to the factory filter housing via clamp. I used 3 hose clamps. Primed the fuel system 3 times and it fired right up. Tested at highway speeds. No leaks. I still need to trim the engine cover just barely to clear the 2 new fuel hoses.

Updated photos!12/9/2024

Okay here is a photo of the CP4 bypass and return filter set up. I'm still debating on shortening the hose from the block back to the supply line and not zipping it to the AC line. The return line from the injectors has not been altered. I just moved it over to the Baldwin 5 micron filter. The outlet from the Baldwin then makes a figure 8 under the line next to it in order to flow back to the stock filter without kinking the line too much. This could be improved with a ~180 degree molded fuel hose but for now it works. I also plan to replace the hose clamps with factory spring clamps as the screw type leave a long portion of screw exposed and that could chafe the coolant hose that runs beside the block in the long run. For now there have been zero issues. I trimmed the front left (when standing in front of the car) portion of the engine cover to clear the 2 hoses to the Baldwin filter. The hose is Gates Barricade hose from Napa. The Baldwin filter is held onto the factory fuel filter housing with 3 hose clamps and a piece of fence mending steel I got at Ace Hardware. My local Grainger supplies the Baldwin filters that are perfectly short so as not to rub the AC line below. Please ask any questions and I can get more photos if needed. The car has 246,000 miles on it and the fuel pump looked great when I took the regulator valve off. No metal whatsoever. I've changed the filter every 20k. This is more a preventative measure so I wont have to shell out big if the CP4 ever decides to grenade itself. I've also used additive at every fill up. Powerservice for the fist 12 years or so and now OPtilube. The car got B5 the first 12 years I owned it in TX and now gets 76 Renewable diesel here in California. My goal when I bought the car in June 2010 (57 miles) was to hit 300,000 miles. I'm on the way. Thanks for listening everyone!

Looked behind the fender liner, found wet foam. Oh dear.

yep! that's why I check every year and clean them out. I also cut the bottom foam and keep the top foam for the 2015 Passat. my JSW? foam delete and put fender liner and motor on. she is my "work car" that brings the food to our table and keep the roof over our heads. we are on the process on buying another JSW that's far nicer than my white JSW as our backup car in case Passat or my work JSW are down, that one takes over.

timing belt replaced at 208k miles and alternator replaced as well with @Mozambiquer 's an brand new Bosch Alternator. old one was eating the belt and made some drag and impacted my fuel economy. since his alternator has been installed, my fuel economy went back to normal-ish.
