What did you do to your MkVI-A6 today?

If your emissions are intact I'd swap that oil out. It does meet VW 505 standards, but it doesn't appear to be low ash and leaving it in there for 7500 miles may shorten the life of your DPF and CAT.
Thanks for the advice. I kinda thought that may be the case. Considering this car will be going on its 3 oil change in under 300 miles, do you think I could save a few bucks and keep the filter that is in there?

I could use a driver's seat for my 235k jsw, if yours is in good shape, and maybe some body panels. What color is the interior/exterior on your parts car?
Not much left of the front end. It's white gold metallic but was primer greyd over.

All my diesels are old, but what does oil have to do with life of exhaust components?

Nope. Oil with higher ash content gets into the combustion chamber, even in very small amounts, and will clog the emissions system components. This will happen even if the engine has zero oil consumption. I'm guessing a lot of it gets in through the turbo.

If your user name indicates a commitment to idi engines, you don't have to worry about it. :)

If oil gets in the combustion chamber, it gets burned, no? Isn't that how it works, you get ash from burning stuff? And if oil is getting into the combustion chamber that means its getting consumed. So id' think if there's zero oil consumption there'd be zero issue running other diesel oil.

Wife has been on me to update our vehicles but these newer diesels seem like fickle beasts, if the oil vapor from the CCV is enough to damage emissions parts in 7500 miles. Must be a huge difference in ash content with low ash oil. The oil in the intake is from the CCV not the turbo. That much I know, lol. No need to guess anymore, now you know!

Honestly how this happens is beyond my ability to explain, but trust that it does. It's not unlike how diesel fuel would clog intake manifolds before ULSD was around. It happens.

And yes, new diesels are more complex and, perhaps fickle. But if you can accept some higher maintenance costs and take care of them, they work fine. We have four new (meaning DPF equipped) diesels in my family and have had relatively few issues.

It doesn't happen that fast. It's gradual. A normal diesel oil will ash it up faster than the VW spec oil. It's like how oil and dirt slowly build up on your garage door. Could always eliminate the issue and run t6.

T6 is now a low ash oil. OK for use in Ram Ecodiesels with modern emissions systems.

Had DSG service at Safford VW in Fredericksburg VA. They applied a 20% discout coupon plus a Military discount. Total came to $580.32. They also did a courtesy inspection of all systems down to tire pressures and tread depth. This a straight, honest dealer and I know the work will be done right. There is no need to look for an Independent even though a few small dollars may be saved on labor rate.

The shifts are crisper and what I thought was turbo lag is now gone. For those of you waffling on this 40k miles service, I strongly recommend you stop putting it off. The alternative is far more expensive.

It just irritates me that because of design factors something as subjectively simple as a transmission fluid and filter service is beyond all but the most dedicated DIYer.

$30 for tools, plus the Vagcom scanner you should already own.

edit: oh, nice to see the price of DSG fluid has doubled since January. Guess i'll be definitely cashing in that "warranty" at FCP 40k from now.

t-dyke:

My experience so far in maintaining my CJAA has been discouraging. Aside from the simplist fluid and filter changes, I must admit the car is beyond me. I am not a novice auto maintainer but the VW does not invite one into the engine compartment or the underside as my older cars did. Access to the VW components is tight and without a lift, painful at my advanced years. The YOU-Tube videos have done nothing for my confidence. The majority of my experience is in old Mercedes Diesels, mainly OM617 variations. I have had four and found I could do everything on them.

I must say that the VW has been dead-nuts reliable and predictable in the 3-plus years I have owned it and has needed no that is zero corrective maintenance. IRT the VAGCOM scanner, I have not needed one but am prepared to buy one when I do. I have noted on this forum that those with the most problems are those who have modified thier cars the most. This car performs to my best satisfaction in dynamics and economy as-is and I have no intent to change anything.

yep DSG fluids out there are stupid expensive. I had one DSG filter cap from RKXtech go bad, leaking.... unknown X of fluids. I rushed to VW to get more fluids with new o-ring to my original DSG filter cap.

it was the MOST EXPENSIVE fluids I ever purchased and never again!

I have been buying this from Amazon for $22 per bottle, Liqui Moly 20044 Dual Clutch Gear Oil. my DSG loves it and shifts a lot smoother than factory VW fluids.

Have one of my old cross drills and slotted rotors on the front and a newer solid one. It's amazing the difference in brake dust on the rim. Cross drilled and slotted one has virtually no brake dust on the rim while the other one is covered. Definitely going to order another set of the cross drilled and slotted they are very good rotors.

Last week I got my 240k mile Timing Belt Service done on my 2010 Golf TDI at Kombi Haus here in Sacramento. Car has about 238k on it right now. Also got the front control arms (set from ID parts), sway links, tie rods replaced. Got the car aligned after. I will say after this my car has never idled more quietly. Before the timing belt change I had a slight "tssk tssk tssk" sound from the timing belt area on cold start and I'm pretty sure that was the TB tensioner on it's way out. Car was nearing the end of the 120k mile service interval for the timing belt. Overall very happy and the car is good for another 120k!

NICE! Glad you got it just in nick of time before the tensioner exits the chat. :)

Auction. $1,700

Car has front end damage but runs and drives didn’t blow any of the bags. Picking it up Monday so I will see it in person then.

Hoping to fix it but plan B will be to swap the black interior into my other wagon and have the drivetrain on the shelf.

This should be really interesting. If possible, please start a thread with info and pics as you go thru the process.

For the first time in close to 5 years of ownership - my car was hit...
My car was parked at work and one of my coworkers had come in and asked me what happened to my bumper. I was thoroughly confused because there wasn't anything wrong as far as I was aware. Low and behold, I walk out there to see what they were talking about and find this:

https://imageupload.io/GcKNhS9VFvGSrMG

Luckily it was still early in the morning, so I was able to sort through the security camera footage for the camera that was on the corner of the building looking right at my car. It didn't take long before I stumbled upon some absolute moron who went into the gas station next door, bought a Fourloko, came back out, chugged it down, tossed the can out his window, and proceeded to do the wildest backing up maneuver I've ever seen; hitting my car and leaving the scene.
By the looks of the damage it doesn't look nearly as bad as it does in the video with how my car was jarred pretty good. I'm definitely pissed but it could have been worse and I've been wanting to get my bumper painted anyways with all the rock chips 😅. So it kinda works out even though I'm out my $500 deductible.
Hoping the cops can track this guy down, but the car is pretty easy to spot so I'm hoping one of these days I can find him out on the road.

Semi mk6 related - tired of dicking around with RNS-510 map upgrades failing, so I decided to image a good drive with dd in Linux, so I don't have to keep the car on a battery tender overnight, only to see the map updates at around 30% the next morning.
