This is literally the first mod I’ve done on the family fleet of TDI’s.
It’s not about how long your in the car but about the frequency you need to stop to get fuel.
I would routinely get 800 miles before I would need to fill up again.

Seems like a number of folks in the NE feel like that. Is it that populated that it's a PIA to fuel up or something?

Where I live yes, driving here is like the movie death race 2000.
Depending on where you’re at , getting back on the road can be a challenge . Common sense and politeness doesn’t seem to exist here.

Cat year sometime i bought a set of 3d printed mus flaps for the front of the car. One broke fairly quickly, the vendor sent out replacments. Just busted another one this morning. Drive through a half frozen mud puddle in the lane, tire broke through and the mud flap got broken off when it hit the ice. (My best guess any way.) Think it's time to make some mud flaps out of rubber this time around.
Those were your rust cover ones?
Maybe try ebay kydex. It's nice and pliable with heat. Forms decently be hand.

I got a tune update too, just haven't had time to put it in yet.... hunting season opened yesterday. Cars going to be sitting for a bit, just doesn't quite have the ground clearance for running around the mountains.
What's for dinner? Hopefully you can fill your freezer!

I get that, I've been in places like that, still go to some occasionally, fortunately I don't live in one. I generally don't even let my tank reach 1/4. Richmond was like that actually. I saw gas for $2.65 per gallon, but I wasn't about to turn the camper around and fight through traffic for it.

Some pumps won't shut off fast enough to avoid a splash back if the vent is not there. I prefer to just push the vent in with the pump nozzle myself to vent as I top off.
This. The wagon had a ventectomy when we bought it and there have been several spills from pumps not shutting off over the years. My sedan is intact and has never had a spill. Holding the vent open with the end of the nozzle to top off is no hardship.

Don't have a ventectomy on any of our cars, and never will. Our cars get 50 miles to the gallon. It's pointless to us, we're never going to stay in a car that long, boring.
In my case not topping off would mean pumping fuel nearly twice as often or paying 10% more on every other fill off the reservation.

....snip....
Selected diesel, and went to pump. Barely a trickle flowed into the tank. Like $0.14 worth. Hmmm. Squeezed the trigger again, and still almost zero flow. Someone else pulled in and started pumping gasoline fine.

Hopefully it's the nozzle insert thing as others have mentioned. Otherwise you're sucking the bottom of tank. Gasers are sucking out a different tank.

Took up the BF sale at IDP for a bit o' kit to do the timing belt on my '02 2dr. I have a sneaking suspicion that I am not going to get a 50 degree weekend in January to do it comfortably this year...LOL

You must drive a lot of miles. If my low fuel light goes on it takes slightly over 12 gallons to fill it. 600 miles gets me easily to the least expensive fuel stations around our state. The cheapest being my neighbourhood, then 70 miles NE, down to Algonac before entering Canada via the ferry, and the reservations in Baraga in the U.P. I suppose if I had to pay the prices you pay in Canada, and extreme distances with miles regularly adding up, I might be more mindful of it.

Not really, it's just that my regular route takes me through the reservation twice per (vented) tank. If I didn't top off I'd need to fill up every time I'm there or pay more elsewhere. Most times the low fuel light comes on 15-20km out

Well, I figured out on my '03 Wagon, from filling my tank on the slowest clip, then topping up to the neck, then venting (and holding the vent) until full to the neck again, I can squeeze about 11.5-12L into the tank before she's completely full. That nets me at least an extra 250-300 km per fill. For me, that's a week's worth of going to work BEFORE the needle comes off full. Filling to the top is definitely worth it.

How do you get that mileage? Drive 60 everywhere?

It's not that hard. I typically drive 75-80 on the highway, ocasionally faster. Vent is out of the tank, I usually add 15.5 gallons right when the low fuel light comes on. My average miles per tank is 725.

My numbers are pretty much the same - except I'm using imperial gallons. I set cruise at 127km/hr, so same speed as you. I guess wagons are more fuel efficient.

My 4 year total FE average, calculated using the ACar app is 5.130L/100km (45.85 MPG US/55.06MPG Imperial). I got my 2003 ALH Wagon at 523696 km, and I'm currently at over 716500 km, so driven 192804 km since August 2020.

According to his sig, Nuje doesn't have a Beetle. Those of us who do (or did) don't have any good options, and TYC seems to be the best of the sad lot.
Ah yes, but Nuje DID have a NB at one point (didn't we all? :)).
To @norbert77, I might have at least one of them still kicking around in the garage; if you wanna cover shipping, they're yours.

I just drive, I don't try to get as much out of the fuel as I can, that's normal. 52-53 out of Donna's, 47-49 out of mine.
Yes but I get hand calculated 43 mpg is or 6 years straight. The car was also going 6% less than indicated, so 6% less miles traveled maybe more with worn tires. Now with the the proper tires brand new the speedo is accurate and the mpg is down to 38.5

How the heck are you not getting tickets at that speed? Or are you mostly in 110 zones? Even then that’s pushing it for me.
Pretty sure they set the speed traps at 130 around here, I was getting the odd ticket at 135 but none since I slowed down about 10 years ago. When I see a cruiser on the highway I rarely need to slow down to avoid passing it.

I think the stunt driving law helped - they like to catch guys doing 50+ over the limit so they can confiscate the car. Not so interested in lesser offenses.

The odometer and speedometer don’t coincide. If you haven’t done it yet, try running a gps over a good length of time for a multiplier. Though it won’t make up that much difference. ALH manuals are fuel sippers regardless of how they’re driven, in my experiences anyway

Go up one size in tires (e.g., 205-65-15, or 205-60-16) and then your speedometer will be accurate.
(But your fuel economy will take a ~3% hit; every 1000km, for example, the odometer will "think" that you only went ~970km)

Today is the last day I'll be out. So far, the only deer I could have shot was a doe about the size of my golden retriever. No legal buck all week. Did see a flock of turkey yesterday. (Not in season.) And my brother had a bear try to take his doe he shot last Saturday. Since this is the last day I can hunt till late archery, I'm not bring picky, but so far it's not been great.

I went to 215 55 17 to get it accurate. At 120km I go 1 faster on GPS. It was a toss-up between 205/60 or 17 for that but ultimately I wanted more tread with.
