Today I used VCDS to reprogram a working Fob I scored (one of many) from local wreckers. Mine (my one and only key) stopped working after a lucky lake swim a couple summers ago. Lucky, cause I didn’t even know it was in the pocket of my shorts.
But yeah !! The VCDS gift just keeps on givin er.
I do need get a second key cut at some point, but refuse to spend the 300-500 dollars my nearest dealership quoted me.
It’s so cool to have remote lock and unlock again; but unfortunately my hatch one doesn’t unlock, which me thinks is cause the remote attached to the hatch came off my parts car. So I guess I’ll have to do a little swap back of the latch remote.
Fixed the kiddos hatch latch assembly today too - I say fixed, because after installing a new one- I was cleaning and playing with the old one and got it to start latching again.
It’s wearing its years (23 to be exact). Lots of rust and crud in there , but that Lucas Moovit penetrating oil spray is my new best friend.
I’ve tried pb blaster, liquid wrench, honey goo, deep creep, but today (probably accumulatively) the bolt holding up a tie rod end on the rear axle of my alh swap van finally let go!
I have mountains of work to do with that van , and removing rusty bolts to change bushings is taking an incredible amount of time and energy.
😅
Just need to remind myself - I’m doing this for the love and the fitness !!

The fob talks to the CCM, which locks and unlocks things. No "latch remote", but the fob button could be bad - does the LED flash when you press it?

Gotta ask: what did that cost you from the fine folk at Uhaul?
I think I paid $1200 after tax. I think I have my bill of sale in the book with my titles, currently in storage. I don't know how many times I've actually used it since I bought it - somewhere between 20 and 30 times, though.

Oh ok- good to know. I’ll try formatting some of the other fobs, the lock and unlock worked perfectly with the doors… so i just guessed it had to do with my donor hatch.
but the hatch locks and unlocks from the door - so it must be fob related.

That’s about what the dolly’s were last time I saw them selling off some of the various “towables”.

For my very casual use, it was just too much for me.

Yesterday I decided to do some plumbing on my recently bought ALH that was babied by a woman its entire life. I think this could explain the lack of power. On the bright side, the stock clutch feels butter smooth with zero rattle sound with just over 200k miles. Turbo is stock and also isn't clogged. Go figure.

When I asked about a trailer, they said they never sell it off because it's so easily identifiable in case of theft

Today is the first road trip /commute after all the major work. I hear some vibrations of our highly cruising I hope it's just a new engine mounts.

Want to see some bling? Check out the f fancy new shifter knob

I have a hose permanently connected to my intake. When my intake was like that it actually jammed up my anti-shudder valve and I barely got home one day. I ran half gallon of good degreaser through the hose turbo and intercooler all to the intake while running, and then another half a gallon of diluted degreaser in water, very slowly over about 60 miles. My intake passages so clear you could eat off of it. Well except for the oil that keeps accumulating, I really need a oil catch can

Yes, no car hauler trailers, just a little dolly. I think that's where we got off track, I was looking for an actual car hauler

It appears as if but I was told about the car trailers still applied, they will sell the dollies but not the tandem car haulers

That sounds much easier than pulling everything off and soaking it, isn't it a bit risky though? Like all that junk getting sucked through the engine, degreaser, water, and carbon bits?

I've only done it the hard way, and one of the nuts was rust/corrosion welded onto the stud so I ended up having to carefully dremel it off while trying not to damage the threads... if this is fine, I'd much rather do it the easy way.

Everything that gets into the engine from the intake was destined to be in there to begin with. That's all soot and EGR stuff, all I do is add a bit of detergent to the mix. Now don't do it at full power, get your engine nice and hot and a very low RPM so the turbo doesn't take a kicking, I use a pump bottle, and slowly give it a few pumps every so often so it has time to sit and clean and do its things. Certainly turbo erosion is a problem so don't do it under high boost condition, that's not the intent. Having said that, like 2000 to 2,500 RPM coasting I really like, l. I don't think there's enough air flow at idle to carry the detergent and water up and around the inter cooler. I started 6 years ago and intake is only oily no more soots going in there, but I think oil from the turbo will coat the inside of the intercooler basically insulating it so this should make it work a lot better as part of regular maintenance

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Dodge Neon SRT4 rims are the narrowest 17 inch rims you can find at 17x6. I really hope I can fit 205 55 17 on the stock beetle. If I could even go for 205 60 or 215 55, that would be amazing but I don't think I'll have the chance to find out.

This seller on Aliexpress has the fob plus will cut the key blade for ~$25CAD.
(That specific link is for the Mk5 key - but I bet if you message them, they'll have a link for the Mk4 key; have the frequency and part number of your fob handy)

Dang I didn’t know Neons were 5x100. That’s cool.

There are just too many to list....
All that era FWD ChryCo products are. PT Cruiser, Neon, Stratus, some of the little fake Jeeps (Compass, etc.).

The Fiat era ChryCo stuff may be something completely different.

Yeah - I was looking at Pontiac Fiero rims - which are the same 5x100 CB 57.1.
They are often showing up in 15” and even as small as 13-14”. But I’ll bet that’s an issue with brake clearance.
And they aren’t cheap- but fun to look at

Better drain that intercooler too. That car is just strugglin! When I bought my 01m alh I prayed that the intake was clogged, because man was it slow. 16+ second 0-60. Sure enough it was clogged, not quite as bad as yours though.

Fiero would use the same pattern as a bunch of other FWD GM cars of the era, J-body, N-body, A-body, etc. In fact, other Pontiac branded cars used the same wheels that some Fieros used. That was a cheap easy way for GM to differentiate a bunch of otherwise nearly identical and forgettable cars.

Some of the subaru's were too. My buddy put my steelie beetle rims on his 05ish legacy (i think?), maybe it was an outback.
There is a 10 millimeter offset difference but I can't remember if it's plus or minus.

I put my beetle winter tires on my mom's 03Corolla. But her rims don't fit on mine because of the hub.

The SRT 4 was with very little mods a 12 second car
Ya people love the neons for hornet racing. I think that's one reason they are hard to find. Well that and their tendency to rust out. very quick cars for being stock. they were nice and light.
