Heck ya man, if it works it works. I use 2x4's, 6x6 iron pipe free off a jobsite, and as many widow makers as I need. Never had an issue. If you do come across a set of cheap jackstands they can be really nice to get the "right" height for certain jobs.
Yes- and I remember doing my ATF flush on the wagon and getting the car level off the ground was strongly encouraged. I’m all about using wood that I got laying about - but when I built stilts for the Toyota van - I was shocked at how unlevel it was - but that thing is just gonna sit there for a bit while I build courage to continue, so it’s not too critical.
I used old railway ties we got laying around

I remvoved the radiator fans out of the parts car to swap into my daily- but I’m waiting to do that when I pull it apart to install the new IC-
I know it’s really only important in the hot months for AC - but I noticed one fan stuck and thought I’d finally get around to swapping in the working assembly.
it’s so tempting to do an entire swap into the donor car.
it’s a gasser - so I know it’s tons of work - and I already have a swap I’m knee deep in . But someone loved this thing- every time I pick it apart I’m shocked at how stellar the body is.
Perfect rockers on a 2002 2.slow.
One day- and if I did- it would be a @JonA type of show if I ever did it.
Check out that guys build thread if you haven’t - it’s so impressive!

She was parked way before, but February 20, 2023 I had a week off work, and so I started the timing belt. Which, if you remember the bits of updates, morphed into a lot of things. Clutch, CV boots, a arms, tie rod and ball joints, wheel bearings, radio upgrade, in tank fuel pump.

Finally moved her out. Seems to be a little low on power, and the girlfriend thinks it's louder. I probably broke the flax pipe but it does seem loud. If injection is too advanced will it idle loud?

The tuner did the hammer mod, 6.8 at idle any good? Seems the numbers are in minimum setting. Does smoke a lot at low rpm, new stock turbo.

Says if ition is advanced but in spec. Would you change it? I know temp is low, but after warming it up for the graph, my laptop died

Check your vacuum line connections?
Happened to me once, after some work I did it was suddenly louder, smokier, and wasn’t boosting much; turned out I had accidentally bumped a vacuum line loose.
If the turbo isn’t getting vacuum it will be noticeably louder, as the vanes will be fully open.

Yes, likely. When I took the engine out marked everything with color paint. Then I pressure washed things, changed out parts. So I had to use a diagram to put things back together and I'm pretty sure it was different than how I had it before.

I don't know if this is an issue for your reassembly project, but you might double check that the anti-shutter valve vacuum plumbing is connected on the correct sides of the control solenoid.

When I bought my car, the prior owner had swapped those two hoses and it had nearly no boost because it was venting vacuum on that valve solenoid.

Is the front end being held up solely by that hydraulic jack? In which case...yikes! 😱
There's no way I'd let anyone crawl under a car being held up by only a hydraulic seal.
As long as the jack isn't deathly old it's probably fine. I mean I can't even count the number of hours I have spent under cars. Just me and the widow maker hating on whatever vehicle for being such a royal piece of trash. I don't recommend it but it can't be that unsafe.... Right? lol. I've even lifted the whole end of cars a time or two.... They hold🤞. I barely even climbed under there when I did that though.

If the intake was dirty and you cleaned it out that will make it louder too.

NEISS estimated that 4,822 people in the U.S. receive hospital emergency treatment in a single year for jack failure injuries.

That data includes jackstand failures - I was surprised by the number of recalls. Maybe 6×6 is the safer way to go even though they inevitably get in the way.

I have ramps made from 10×10 fir I use for any job that doesn't require wheels off.

In all seriousness, ya. Its amazing how much skimping companies can get away with on jackstands. Just watch project farms video. Another part of that is incorrect use, placement, and setting up of the jackstand. People are great at hurting themselves these days. Sometimes I think all some people can see is the paycheck they might receive if they get hurt. All these lawsuits are making people lazy about their safety.

these engines really run much better when you don't run over-advanced... however, whether what you do in the graph here makes much of a difference depends on what is loaded in the ecu and your fueling hardware. too much advance leads to low end torque, most noticeably.

Ok, so last night I fixed a vacuum leak on the wifes car for like the thousandth time. Turns out the brand-used (aka spare I installed) vacuum pump nipple became loose and started leaking. I gooped it up with what sealer I currently have until I can replace it with OSI-quad. I also decided this would be a good time to re replace the injector return lines that have been leaking for the past month. Hopefully the leaking hasn't already ruined my headgasket lol. I put brand new diesel rated 3mm braided return lines on it like it had previously. They started leaking out the ends right away. So here in a few minutes I'm going to get some oriellys stuff.

That shouldn’t affect your head gasket .
Now ….. the coolant hoses are another matter…….

Is the number below the graph important? Does over advance help cold start?

As I understand it, between the two limit lines, and when running a stock tune, there is adjustment internally to hit what ever timing is requested. Go with some other tune, with a non-stock advance table/matrix and then those two limits are close to meaningless.

Ok, good to know. Thanks! Coolant hoses are good so far. Put new lines on the injector returns and they still leak. Which is weird because it was a decently tight fit. So now I'm like what the heck?? do I need to use 2.5mm hose? Such a dumb issue.

This is what I bought. Not 100% sure it's viton, but it's diesel rated. I have multiple other engines with line on them so maybe I'll steal a piece. It's the wifes car so I wanted new stuff on it. Ideally she will eventually not have to worry about leaking fluids because I have almost replaced everything now at this point lol.

Couldn't refuse, wagons have gone out of my price range
It's so insane. I can't believe people are asking as much as they are for them. I only got my wagon (Rebelle) for a good deal because it was going to the auction block and I offered a little over the trade in value. Even more unbelievable is what some beetles are selling for around here. I have seen a couple sell near the $3k range, with plenty of rust, dents, and no maintenance history.
