All I did was fill up for the first time in a month of regular driving. 50̷L at 4.9L/10̷0̷km or 49mpg. Woohoo! i snagged the only open diesel slot just as a disgruntled John Deere service truck pulled in and had to wait, he seemed upset haha I think he was hoping I was putting the wrong fuel in

Just some cleaning, but it's been a loooong time since I've posted on TDIClub so here are a few pictures of the same Jetta I owned when I joined here!
Nice car, and nice to see a fellow Texan with a personalized TDI-related plate.

Those door cards almost look like they're from a mk5.

Well, first post on this forum. Just recently purchased a new (to me) Mk4 Golf with the 1.9 BEW Engine. 226k miles. First TDi, first VW. Today was adjust the shift linkage. Drain the intercooler. Replace some inop lights. Oil change. New washer nozzles. New washer pump. New wipers. Tested the actuator and its holding vacuum from the N75 valve so that's good news. Worked the vanes by hand and it's smooth. Lots of loose connections on the charge air piping. Probably the source of most of the boot leak (by butt Dino Diag). Was getting an under boost fault but the cooler was filled with oil. (Cars been sitting for a year) I've driven it for a week now and it's not actually pushing oil so far, we'll see with a fresh oil change what happens. Fixed a hood latch issue and have some other stuff on order. Need to find a bumper and headliner. Maybe a fender too. Also need to redo the brakes all around. Bought the car for $1,800 so I want to put less than 1200 into it and have a new daily. It's driving a lot better and seems cleaning all the intercooler piping and seals helped with the leaks. Might just replace it all with actual piping and an upgraded smic.

Nicely done! Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have a good handle on things! I am sure you know, but I just want to double check for your sake... BEWs can have cam issues and are picky on their oil so you need to make sure you got VW spec 50̷5.0̷1 oil, and it may be worth inspecting those cams.

I'm a fan of shell T6 and seems enough people use it l/have with minimal issues. Isn't certified but they don't pay anyone for a certs. I use it in my XJ and my STI. It's good enough for this first oil change as I track everything. And see if any other big issues are present.
Yeah I'm aware of the cam issue. Wasn't too concerned with this once since it doesn't have any smoking or rough running/idle hard warm start issues but I plan to open it up and inpect it soon. Worst case, I upgrade sooner than expected.

My ALH car doesn't like T6 for whatever reason. I use Mobil 1 Turbodiesel Truck 5w40 oil. Watch for excessive clatter on startup after the car sits for a few days, that's what mine did with T6, doesn't do it with the Mobil 1, even after sitting for a month or longer.
Worth it to do the timing belt and water pump if you don't have solid documentation on the last time it was done, and what parts were used.

I second that. My car consumes more T6 than Mobil 1 as well.

Interesting. I always get that clatter for the first 15 seconds or so. Figure it's normal because it's just the lifters pumping up and oil reaching the top end.

Shell sure does pay for certs:

I believe at one point T6 was VW 505.00 approved (ALH engines and earlier) but no longer, probably because of the change to low ash for use in cars with DPFs.
Most BEW owners are pretty careful to run a 505.01 5w40 oil. Cam life on the BEW is probably the longest of all the PD engines.

It's not a case of not paying for the certification, it's a case of not meeting the specifications. There are some guys who run it, but I do not recommend it or use it for these

Had to replace the G28 Engine Speed (a.k.a. crank position/angle) sensor over the weekend, due to the original (as far as I know) finally giving up the ghost last Thursday morning.

Got that done (and swapped in a new cabin air filter, I splurged on the Hengst Allergy-rated one from ID when I bought the sensor), and took it to the local gas station to top off the tank so as to start off the week's commuting at full.

Took 12.99 gallons for 571.3 miles, or 43.98 MPG.

I'm stoked by this, considering that I was playing a little with the renewed power from all the work done (was too addictive the first couple days back in it) - that's right up where I was when the car was new, and I've running .205 nozzles in it for several years. I figure being a little less rambunctious and I'll see that tick up a tiny bit more.

Another facet to my amazement at the MPG from the first full tank comes from all the stuff I dumped into it right after the lifter failure: At the time it started running poorly, I was only about 70 miles into a freshly-refilled fuel tank, and I suspected poor fuel. So, over the course of getting home in it that night and the next morning when I tried swapping the fuel filter in case it was full of water, I had poured into it:

- About 32 ounces of PowerService (grey bottle)
- 24 ounces STP Diesel Fuel Additive/System Cleaner
- 26 ounces PowerService Diesel 911 (I pre-filled the new filter with this the next morning, then dumped the rest into the tank hoping to clear what I thought was water in the fuel).

Unfortunately, as noted upthread all that did precisely squat and the real culprit was the failed lifter, but hopefully all that additive gave my injectors a nice thorough cleaning over the first couple hundred miles post-repair...

I've been running T6 5w40 in the jetta as long as I've had it, zero rattles or noises at start up even after prolonged sitting. During covid I ran mobile delvac in it. Didn't notice a bit of difference. Actually run t6 in all my diesels and my big block.

Well my sense of this for my car is that she’s been on TDT starting with the first oil change and run with TDT for about 250k miles. So she’s just used to it. My mechanic used something other than TDT or T6, and she’s doing pretty good with it. Edit: he used Rowe 5w30.

What I did yesterday...
Encountered this yesterday at a left turn lane at a busy intersection in Kerrville:
https://forums.tdiclub.com/index.php?threads/clutch-hydraulic-line-leak-at-slave.513163/

Got the car towed home and then filed a claim with insurance for towing. Didn't think about googling on TDIclub, but saw it was leaking bad around the slave cylinder. I pulled one from my former Ute project, that I've already decided I'll probably be scrapping/parting out. I didn't get better luck with the plastic barbed clutch line, so I reused mine - had to push it back in several times, but got the brakes and clutch bled, and now it's tighter than ever, though the pedal doesn't have the full swing it used to. Car still drives and feels good, though. This was on DSOL (see signature).

Then, I adjusted the headlights on DSEL - had a headlight replacement a few months ago and never got around to readjusting the lights. They're probably a little higher than in the city, but now I can see deer a lot better, instead of having the beam pattern be about 40 feet in front of my car. I still need to do a DOT4 flush on DSEL at some point, as that fluid is on the darker side.

I'm bad and run whatever's cheapest - T6 or 5W40 from Carquest. It's marketed as Fram, but I'm told it's made by someone else (I'd never use Fram filters). I've even been known to mix and match in a pinch. The tractors and truck get 15W40 though, since that's what they call for. and I think my generator calls for 10W30 or something.

So I have a few items waiting for me as soon as I arrive home from my month long work trip. A diesel geek full metal jacket skid plate, A U.S. odometer and about to order the vagcom device as well. What would be really nice is my glass headlight lenses will be waiting for me too. =) Regarding the skid, I’m thinking I should apply a coat of fluid film before I throw it on. Fun times! =)

Put fluid film on it - it's not galvanized?
I’m not referring to the skid plate I’m referring to the chassis before I install the skid. My apologies, I was not very clear.

Drove it to pick up a used smart tv mainboard.

A friend gave me the tv because it was stuck in a boot loop and he'd been told it wasn't worth fixing. I figured it might be a corrupted EEPROM and managed to get it to boot with default settings by shorting the SDA line to ground during power up, but it still kept rebooting before I could get into the service menu. Power supply voltages checked out so I figured it needed a mainboard.

60" smart tv for $45 :)
