Had to replace the G28 Engine Speed (a.k.a. crank position/angle) sensor over the weekend, due to the original (as far as I know) finally giving up the ghost last Thursday morning.
Got that done (and swapped in a new cabin air filter, I splurged on the Hengst Allergy-rated one from ID when I bought the sensor), and took it to the local gas station to top off the tank so as to start off the week's commuting at full.
Took 12.99 gallons for 571.3 miles, or 43.98 MPG.
I'm stoked by this, considering that I was playing a little with the renewed power from all the work done (was too addictive the first couple days back in it) - that's right up where I was when the car was new, and I've running .205 nozzles in it for several years. I figure being a little less rambunctious and I'll see that tick up a tiny bit more.
Another facet to my amazement at the MPG from the first full tank comes from all the stuff I dumped into it right after the lifter failure: At the time it started running poorly, I was only about 70 miles into a freshly-refilled fuel tank, and I suspected poor fuel. So, over the course of getting home in it that night and the next morning when I tried swapping the fuel filter in case it was full of water, I had poured into it:
- About 32 ounces of PowerService (grey bottle)
- 24 ounces STP Diesel Fuel Additive/System Cleaner
- 26 ounces PowerService Diesel 911 (I pre-filled the new filter with this the next morning, then dumped the rest into the tank hoping to clear what I thought was water in the fuel).
Unfortunately, as noted upthread all that did precisely squat and the real culprit was the failed lifter, but hopefully all that additive gave my injectors a nice thorough cleaning over the first couple hundred miles post-repair...
