Sold my beloved 2001 golf TDI today.😢 Auto to manual swap with 447,xxx miles on it. I had put 408,xxx miles on it myself.
It was this car that led me to this site and taught me a lot about diesels , meet some nice people on here and some even in person , to the point I still have 5 TDI’s in the family.
It’s going to another TDI enthusiast who I hope will bring another 200,xxx miles to it …… the car just wants to run….

It's a hard day selling something you've put a lot and time and effort into making it yours. I felt the same about my 2002 Golf that went to a good buddy of mine.

Takes longer to heat soak, then it's about the same level of effectiveness as a stock unit. + you're not getting any better airflow through the thicker core. Ie not worth it imo.
get a vented fender liner. You’ll have a clear path for the air to travel from the bumper to the wheel well. A bigger/thicker intercooler then will have a larger effect.

Got one shortly after I got the intercooler, to replace the already broken solid fender liner. Another marginal difference. That helped more when you're up at 45+ mph. Once you get into town, out of the mountain and into traffic there's little difference in iat with low air flow/slow speeds in heavy traffic. It's effectiveness is even less when the ambient temps get to 80+*f. Once it heat soaks in those conditions it's basically little more effective then a stock unit. I haven't been impressed enough to want to go this way on another car, and certainly don't reccomend it if your stock intercooler is working fine.

When I swapped out my original SMIC and went for the slightly larger upgrade and vented fender liner, the difference was immediate, and impressive. I suspect my old one was oil/dust caked and clogged, I should have cut it open and had a look.
At that time the upgrade was only $100 on Ebay.

If you're concerned about heat soaking it, you gotta' be driving at the limits of boost and power on a sustained basis.
If ambient temps are high, I suspect you'd the have same problem with a FMIC, which gets pretty involved from all reports to install. Worth it for the track,
but for a daily driver it's not a concern for me.

Around town I believe this is why a front mounter intercooler has an advantage, as when the fans kick in they help cool it also.

I don’t know if there’s enough room to mount a fan on top of our intercoolers but I swear I’ve seen someone do it around here…

I don't see how, the shroud ensures the fans only blow air through the radiator.
Intercooler are usually in front of the radiator and condenser. the fan (s) don't have issues pulling air through them. Yes shrouds help keep air flowing where it should be, but that doesn't limit it to just the radiator. Look at most intercooled pickups for the past 20+ years. Intercooler, condenser and rad, with a puller fan.

No, you don't have to be driving to any limits to heat soak. Low airflow, high ambient temps, extra load. I live on top a mountain, sustained foot in throttle is normal driving, add in 90* + ambient temp, ac, the kids and wife, whatever cargo. I regularly use the car to run to the mill for feed, or stop and get sacrete etc on my way home from work. I basically use it as my mini pickup truck, which I see little to no difference with guys towing other cars/ trailers with their tdi's.
I expected much better results then I got with the larger smic. I certainly do not beat the ever living crap out of my economy car.

That’s a stock turbo, you won’t get your power goals out of it. I have one on my Jetta and my Taco. It’s pretty much the same as a vnt15.
OK, because I'm still a little mystified on the differences between turbos... have also seen a 17/22 for sale, also new for $900. My understanding is that this *IS* an upgrade, but is it worth it? The price is definitely attractive.

What I did to my mk4 today - got a new (but used) bike rack for it today, to bring home two new killer deal used bikes:

Also found my power steering reservoir is a little low, so I gotta get some CHF 11S tomorrow from Carquest.

Ouch! I used to use those strap-to-the-car racks, but then got a car I cared about (our first VW) and started looking for something better so as not to damage the paint and metal of the hatch.
If that hitch ball can be removed (looks a lot like a euro Bosal-type, though...(?)) and there's a 1.25" receiver there....keep your eyes open for a Kuat Sherpa v2. Not cheap (okay - actually pretty stupid-expensive) brand new, but I just saw one go locally for $300CAD. If you carry bikes, you'll thank yourself everytime you put it to use.

Installed the dieselgeek shifter bushings today. Man what a difference! I thought I had broken one of the cables, but the bushing was completely gone and it slid off. It's never shifted this nice!

Then added more power with the stickers.

Now just gotta get @burpod to make stickers... Oh and flash his latest version of his tune on. I fueled it up and will be checking the fuel economy now

Ordered Vredestein HiTrac all seasons for the Ol' whip today. These got really good reviews on tire rack, for whatever that's worth. Tired of hydroplaning on the crappy wall mart douglases.
Aww man, not going to try the ling longs?? They have a great line of tires😄. Our truck had them for like 7yrs and 35k miles.

Oooo, yes! Burpod stickers! Should have the rabbit be a part of the decal! If @burpod sent me a few photos of his car or something he wanted to have integrated as a decal I might be able to get some designs made up via a friend. No promises, but they would possibly do it for me. Then I can send it to him and he could have them printed out however he likes. This is a possibility, not official.

His tunes are so f*cking awesome, especially since I changed timing to below retarding under VCDS timing.

And nice work on the short shifters. Now you're not rowing the boat shifting gears. I honestly couldn't imagine a regular shifter, as every TDI I own has a dieselgeek kit on it.

Going to have to wait till mid next week to get them mounted, but the tires are sitting on my porch. My buddy works at a chryco dealer (maintaining the facilities, not sales or “fixing” cars) and we can use their equipment to mount & balance. I’ll only get a month or so on them before swapping over to snows, but the Douglases—which were meh at best new—are just beat.

That bubbling tint would really bug me, doesn't interfere with your rear view?
Yes, it does... I don't like bubbling tint, but I also haven't had good luck pulling it off...

Which can ruin the defroster grid
I think thats why you use it though... so as not to hurt it. As long as you go side to side and use fine wool it seems to work. Idk maybe im wrong but ive seen it done. Then again maybe they were lucky. 🤷‍♂️

I've always heard that using a steam cleaner was the big truck to remove old tint, and what the garbage bag truck was trying to emulate.

I bought one from Harbor Freight to strip the remains of tint from my car's windows, but haven't actually gotten around to it yet.

I had a similar problem, until I got a small rock chip, and just had it replaced under glass coverage on insurance, which was well worth the $100 deductible.
