I picked up some candy canes for the Jetta on Saturday along with a 1.8T pancake pipe I plan on installing today. Also picked up a Bentley manual for a pretty sweet deal yesterday.
That's us, unless the customer does something really stupid. We always kinda gave away the time on quick stuff like that. Easy way to make a quick buck and keep a customer happy, possibly bring more work in the shop. That shop must really have not wanted to change those struts, or they were worried about breaking something and didn't want to do it. Imo.
Our labor rate is $285 last I checked. Closest Audi (Brahmen) is >$450/hr. Florida charges tax on parts and labor. Like most dealers there is shop supplies charge (which is $$ grab).I could see them charging a full hours labor for the reasons you mention. Let's say $150. And they'll charge retail on the oe struts--$100 a pop (of course they pay less). That's $350. Not almost $600.
Looks awesome. I need to do this on mine! Otherwise I may get ebay lenses and see how long they last.Cleaned my headlights today I hope they stay looking like this for a bit.![]()

Curious, whats the appeal to the candy canes? I'm not sure I understand the cult behind them...![]()

I think the canes are unique and clean the car up a little. And lol the pancake pipe beat me today… I’ll go back to the yard in a couple weeks and I am going to cut the metal end off the connector to the turbo from an other car and see if that set up works. I’d also like to log it after the fact to see if it does anything. I can’t imagine it will hurt. I can make a write up when the time comes if a more recent one would be helpful.Curious, whats the appeal to the candy canes? I'm not sure I understand the cult behind them...
When you get a parts list/cost for the pancake setup I'd be super interested in seeing it (if your up for sharing with me whats all needed) as I have 3 of those sitting around for a "someday project". I know there's a thread around here somewhere from years ago, but it would be interesting to see what you come up with as a recent guideline.
Won't hurt anything. Will actually quicken spool time. Logs may be interesting to see.I think the canes are unique and clean the car up a little. What are the candy canes typically found on? I like the look ... want them for my wagon![]()

They are found on Jetta sedans from 2003 onward I believe. They pop up on Facebook pretty frequently and at the junk yard from time to time but tent to go pretty quickly. What are the candy canes typically found on? I like the look ... want them for my wagon
Aren't they GLI tails? They are found on Jetta sedans from 2003 onward I believe. They pop up on Facebook pretty frequently and at the junk yard from time to time but tent to go pretty quickly.
They are called ocean tail lights. They were used on MK4 sedans in Canada starting in 2004, but not wagons - but wagons did get them in Europe. They can be found here (try EBay) but tend to be $pendy. What are the candy canes typically found on? I like the look ... want them for my wagon
These wagon versions aren't quite the same candy cane look.Edit: looks like ECS has them special order

Those are dealer retail prices for the MANUAL struts, or the power liftgate version? Our labor rate is $285 last I checked. Closest Audi (Brahmen) is >$450/hr. Florida charges tax on parts and labor. Like most dealers there is shop supplies charge (which is $$ grab).

Quick google search - $25 each on Amazon
I'm currently saving up for my tune and using the time to change the TB. It's burning a hole in my sole having to wait. Glad to see another happy customer. What " stage" did you go with?Just got the new @burpod tune with my n75 adjusted maps. NO LIMP MODE (yet) !!
The car absolutely rips! It is so hard to not drive fast. I am going to delete the Cat when I get back from my 2 week gig up north firefighting. But this car is wicked fun to drive.
I offered to drive the kids to town again this morning instead of letting them take the bus to school. They told my wife that yesterday we drove 160km/h.
We had to have a little talk about how dangerous it is to speed, and that I shouldn't be encouraging them to drive faster than the speed limit...
So I kept it cool(ish) on the way to town, and then ripped home in a land speed record time.
So fun!
Thanks to the GOAT @burpod for the expertise and all the other side advice I get.
This forum rocks!
Hey Powder Hound, I took a look at this with a well faded and broken one at the P&P, and it looked to me like the best way to release the 'front' clips( your horizontal arrows in the 'cover off' photo), was to remove the black part held on by the two philips screws. Without that, it sure looked next to impossible to get the cover off intact. While painting the mirror covers as part of my Jettachero build, I noticed that the mirror covers were difficult to remove, and very difficult to replace. So I took a good look.
The points noted on the cover below are those which slide onto points on the "frame". Double click to see the whole picture.
Here are the mating points of the frame. Double click for the whole photo.
This is the original part, some 22 years old. The oxidation on this is familiar to owners of Mk IV VWs. It is this oxidation that swells the interface spaces and makes it difficult to take a cover off or replace it. If you use a fine file or piece of sandpaper or toothbrush and pumice or whatever else works, remove the oxidation, it will all go lots easier. I sprayed a small amount of white lithium grease in each of these points in the hope that by the time I do this again, remaining grease will help keep more oxide from forming so that next time it won't be so difficult.
Cheers,
PH
yes late GLI lights are red/smoke/red/smokeGLI are *SLIGHTLY different. Not sure exactly what the official difference is, but the clear bit looks a bit darker/smokier vs the regular sedan ones. I had to bore another hole to fit the earlier light bucket in on the bottom row. A 1" hole as I recall...careful not to crack anything.

a buddy who works at Marin VW texted me about this outage... crazyOnly about 15,000 shops affected. Even heard that Costco used CDK for something in their store (tire shop?).
But most car dealerships that use CDK have been at stand still or limping badly.

you definitely won't regret going with burpods tune. stage 1 is all stock hardware. stage 2 is bigger nozzles, stage 3 is adding a bigger turbo after nozzles - minimum vnt17I'm currently saving up for my tune and using the time to change the TB.
