I picked up some candy canes for the Jetta on Saturday along with a 1.8T pancake pipe I plan on installing today. Also picked up a Bentley manual for a pretty sweet deal yesterday.

We always kinda gave away the time on quick stuff like that. Easy way to make a quick buck and keep a customer happy, possibly bring more work in the shop. That shop must really have not wanted to change those struts, or they were worried about breaking something and didn't want to do it. Imo.
That's us, unless the customer does something really stupid.

I could see them charging a full hours labor for the reasons you mention. Let's say $150. And they'll charge retail on the oe struts--$100 a pop (of course they pay less). That's $350. Not almost $600.
Our labor rate is $285 last I checked. Closest Audi (Brahmen) is >$450/hr. Florida charges tax on parts and labor. Like most dealers there is shop supplies charge (which is $$ grab).

OMFG!!! :eek:o_O:eek: From Nissan dealer - $210.33 for left hatch strut, $193.36 for right hatch strut. List price shown, with 4th July discount $178.78 and $164.36.

Quick google search - $25 each on Amazon

Curious, whats the appeal to the candy canes? I'm not sure I understand the cult behind them...

When you get a parts list/cost for the pancake setup I'd be super interested in seeing it (if your up for sharing with me whats all needed) as I have 3 of those sitting around for a "someday project". I know there's a thread around here somewhere from years ago, but it would be interesting to see what you come up with as a recent guideline.

I think the canes are unique and clean the car up a little. And lol the pancake pipe beat me today… I’ll go back to the yard in a couple weeks and I am going to cut the metal end off the connector to the turbo from an other car and see if that set up works. I’d also like to log it after the fact to see if it does anything. I can’t imagine it will hurt. I can make a write up when the time comes if a more recent one would be helpful.

Won't hurt anything. Will actually quicken spool time. Logs may be interesting to see.

What are the candy canes typically found on? I like the look ... want them for my wagon

GLI are *SLIGHTLY different. Not sure exactly what the official difference is, but the clear bit looks a bit darker/smokier vs the regular sedan ones. I had to bore another hole to fit the earlier light bucket in on the bottom row. A 1" hole as I recall...careful not to crack anything.

@northern diesel

Found these on Ebay that may be closer to what you were looking for. Jetta wagon tail lamps

And I found this link on Ebay that shows the Euro Ocean lamps - looks like you could take the amber lens out and use the rear turn signal bulb from a facelift NB to get the clear lens with amber turn signal (they use a coating so they appear clear, but illuminate amber)

Page 1, from post #17 onward. Assuming you have the hose with the metal clip connector end.

Those are dealer retail prices for the MANUAL struts, or the power liftgate version?

Had been noticing what I thought was a slight puff of exhaust when the car wasn't moving for a while, figured one of the EGR pipes had started to split (original to the car, as far as I know). Then two weeks back I started smelling a touch of raw fuel at low speeds/stopped. Checked under the hood, saw that the nuts for the two injector hard lines closest to the block looked damp. The lower one was snug, but the upper one took a little bit of a turn once I got a wrench on it.

That didn't do anything for the raw fuel smell. I was gearing up to buy a full set of new hard lines from ID, when last Thursday morning on the way to work the fuel smell suddenly got a lot worse. Got to work and popped the hood, the return line between the #2 and #3 injectors was dripping rapidly (1sec or less between drips at idle), and was soaking down the engine. Seems it was cut a touch too long and had been rubbing against the two hard lines above it for the past 10 years.

Called around to all the auto parts stores in the area of work (and a hydraulic line shop as well), no luck finding 1/8" I.D. fuel line. VW Dealer (1 mile from work, place I bought the car) was useless - apparently their computers had been down for a week and they couldn't look anything up, due to some hacking event recently.

Finally managed to find "primer hose" (used on snowblowers) at a nearby small engine/power equipment shop and replaced all the lines (only the one was leaking, but they were all "crunchy" after having been on for a number of years), then ordered the "proper" stuff from IDParts before the day was out so I was prepared if this stuff didn't hold up very long. With the new lines on, the smell was instantly reduced to near nothing, and the rest went away after the drive home baked off the rest. Been smell-free since.

And yes, I cut the replacement for the line that rubbed through a little shorter and confirmed a visible gap between it and the hard lines.

Checked on it on Saturday, and they seem to be holding up fine (and, comparing the "primer hose" to the stuff from ID, it looks the same except for lacking the braided outer jacket) so I'm going to leave them be for now. The remainder of that stuff and the stuff from ID is all in the trunk so it's right at hand if/when needed...

For whatever it's worth, I bought some 1/8" Gates fuel hose from the local auto parts store years ago, and it's been there ever since.

I knew that I had some of the hose with the fabric over braid, but not a clue as to where it'd ended up.

I don't know what this is - no markings, and it was in a cardboard tray (looked like someone slid 50-100 feet of the stuff off the spool into the cardboard tray.

It looks and feels (based on resistance to squeezing) nearly identical to the original braided-covered stuff, which is why I left it. I only paid $10 for 4 ft of the stuff (and then another $10 for the OEM stuff), so it's not like I've spent a lot of money for this.

While painting the mirror covers as part of my Jettachero build, I noticed that the mirror covers were difficult to remove, and very difficult to replace. So I took a good look.

The points noted on the cover below are those which slide onto points on the "frame". Double click to see the whole picture.

Here are the mating points of the frame. Double click for the whole photo.

This is the original part, some 22 years old. The oxidation on this is familiar to owners of Mk IV VWs. It is this oxidation that swells the interface spaces and makes it difficult to take a cover off or replace it. If you use a fine file or piece of sandpaper or toothbrush and pumice or whatever else works, remove the oxidation, it will all go lots easier. I sprayed a small amount of white lithium grease in each of these points in the hope that by the time I do this again, remaining grease will help keep more oxide from forming so that next time it won't be so difficult.

Cheers,

PH

Just got the new @burpod tune with my n75 adjusted maps. NO LIMP MODE (yet) !!
The car absolutely rips! It is so hard to not drive fast. I am going to delete the Cat when I get back from my 2 week gig up north firefighting. But this car is wicked fun to drive.
I offered to drive the kids to town again this morning instead of letting them take the bus to school. They told my wife that yesterday we drove 160km/h.
We had to have a little talk about how dangerous it is to speed, and that I shouldn't be encouraging them to drive faster than the speed limit...
So I kept it cool(ish) on the way to town, and then ripped home in a land speed record time.
So fun!
Thanks to the GOAT @burpod for the expertise and all the other side advice I get.

This forum rocks!
I'm currently saving up for my tune and using the time to change the TB. It's burning a hole in my sole having to wait. Glad to see another happy customer. What " stage" did you go with?

Hey Powder Hound, I took a look at this with a well faded and broken one at the P&P, and it looked to me like the best way to release the 'front' clips( your horizontal arrows in the 'cover off' photo), was to remove the black part held on by the two philips screws. Without that, it sure looked next to impossible to get the cover off intact.

you definitely won't regret going with burpods tune. stage 1 is all stock hardware. stage 2 is bigger nozzles, stage 3 is adding a bigger turbo after nozzles - minimum vnt17

That outage affected gm dealers as well. My brother in law was telling me they are still unable to access their computer system.
