👍 Maybe it's just the bv39 doing it's thing but sure sounds like a whistling boost leak when spooling, especially noticable when next to a wall or in a tunnel.
I have a similar thing with my vnt15. Found one boost leak and that helped. But still nothing. I had a really good look. I figure my vanes were a little sticky and they finally let loose for good. I guess we will find out when I do my bigger turbo down the road

Almost 20yrs since I bought my first ALH - a 2000 that lasted just a couple years due to my naïveté about black ice....that it could/would form on some bridges while (a) no frost on approaching pavement; and (b) ambient air temp in the 2-3°C (35-40°F) range. :(

Greetings…
So my shifter would bind from left to right, not freely move back to center position, making it sort of difficult to shift correctly. But this would only happen once it warmed up.
After research I removed the relay lever on top of trans shift tower. Sticky to remove but pulled it out. Bushings stayed in. Sanded the shaft alot till it moved freely in place. Clean, lube with Mobil1 snthetic grease. Reassemble. and it feels like new. Took me a little over an hour.
Just thought I would pass the info along in case anybody has the same problem.
checked the bushings in the shifter in the car itself and everything looks good.
👍
The real culprit is the metal of the case is corroding and expanding inside that "tube" where the bushings & the pin for that relay lever live. IDParts has new bushings. Get the old ones out, and clean up that hole with a wire bristle brush plumbers use. I actually found a drill bit that fit snugly in there and used that (by hand) as well. Coat the bore with a little grease to slow down new corrosion, install new bushings, and you're golden.

Pulled the intake manifold and one bolt took some threads with it

In an attempt to retorque the fastener, added a few strands of aluminum wire into the hole before inserting the manifold bolt. Was able to get it fairly snug (5ft-lbs-ish) and the other bolts held tight so hopefully no leaks.

Thinking of tapping the head for a 3/8 bolt with coarser threads and cranking it in
Fine threads hold more torque.

Just got the new @burpod tune with my n75 adjusted maps. NO LIMP MODE (yet) !!
The car absolutely rips! It is so hard to not drive fast. I am going to delete the Cat when I get back from my 2 week gig up north firefighting. But this car is wicked fun to drive.
I offered to drive the kids to town again this morning instead of letting them take the bus to school. They told my wife that yesterday we drove 160km/h.
We had to have a little talk about how dangerous it is to speed, and that I shouldn't be encouraging them to drive faster than the speed limit...
So I kept it cool(ish) on the way to town, and then ripped home in a land speed record time.
So fun!
Thanks to the GOAT @burpod for the expertise and all the other side advice I get.

This forum rocks!

Me too, sadly. My brand new 2000 Tornado Red ALH also died on black ice during a long cross-country trip while in West Virginia in the middle of the night. That was also the night I learned how safe these cars are because my car hit the concrete median front/back/front again before coming to a stop. I had that car for 7 years, and I'd probably have used that one as my long-term project if it hadn't died.

Between rain storms finally removed the vacuum ball , bracket , check valve ( which I found out was bad ) and some vacuum hoses.
Took it for a good test drive and noticed nothing different.
Looks good , got some more to remove and clean up before I install my new injectors from Burpods group buy.
Just need time to myself and to stop putting out everyone’s fires…….

Well, I got the 2004 BEW Jetta running great now after getting a tune from the GOAT @burpod and I did the VSS cluster hack for the abs sensors as it was never wired for the transmission speed sensor.
Now it runs awesome!

While looking the 00 NB over found a grove worn int the accessory drive belt. Ran it up on ramps and found that the receiver dryer bracket was wearing a groove into it.
Found the lower radiator support was missing a bolt , and damn near impossible to get one installed ( even if I had one ) with the front clip on…… soooo a zip tie to the rescue and bent bracket to the right…… now there’s a 1/4” clearance and had to install a new belt.

I had a lucky find on my Jetta...

I'd replaced the AC compressor around 2.5 years ago due to a failed clutch that I couldn't get of to replace separately. The new compressor promptly started making an unholy clatter the second day I used it, after maybe 4 hours of operation the first day.

In hindsight, it appears that the low-side gauge may be off, as this past weekend I hooked up a basic "tech in a can" that a friend had for their vehicle, just out of curiosity, and found that even in 95° weather, the gauge was barely over 40psi, where it should have been 50-55psi at that temperature.

Topping up the charge a little bit got the discharge temps to start dropping, and the noise was gone.

It looks like the noise was most likely just the low pressure switch cutting power to the compressor clutch every time it started to pull vacuum at a lower ambient temp than the system had been serviced.

Time to replace that gauge on my manifold as well!

Youngest daughters 03 NB developed a coolant leak Sunday, coolant light came on while she was doing errands.
Found the hose from the outlet of the head coolant flange to have a hole just past the clamp.
Recut the hose after the clamp and had a bear of a time trying to get the hose back on the flange.
Have a new hose on order.

Finally installed a 28mm Neuspeed rear swaybar on DSOL. I'm supposed to have an R32 3 spoke steering wheel I ordered from Europe today, so the only differences between DSEL will be a transmission with taller .717 5th and LSD (and I need to mount my brake controller). Technically, I don't have the upgraded TIP pipe, but I don't think it makes that big a difference. Otherwise, both 2002's will be nearly identical cars that I rotate fairly regularly now. Also thinking about selling DSUL after I troubleshoot my HVAC (compressor isn't engaging, but it did work before). I only ever wanted two 2002 Golfs, so I think it's time to stick it on CL or FBMP and hope I get my asking price, given the mods it has.

Finally got around to replacing the passenger window regulator as it was binding.
Now the window goes up and down…..oh and fixed the up and down switch for that window too……for some reason the switch worked backwards, had to take it apart and do a 180 on toggle mechanism so it would fit into the door panel cutout properly.

Ended up trying different codings on the last tune @burpod sent me. Holy f**king $#!t - the car is super responsive, even at lower RPMs while the turbo is spooling up. I don't know how accurate it is, but FE was A LOT better. Lately, with the AC running full blast, I've been getting in the mid-30s. Even if FE isn't better by the time I need to fill the holy tank, wow - my ALH feels like my CJAA, which unfortunately still has a craptastic tune on it.

lol, i was wondering when you were going to try the different versions hidden on there... :) between variations in cars, sometimes one runs better than another

I did log 011 and 025, and just emailed it to you, actually. I still need to see how it looks in vcscope. I think there was some overboost at times, though I was looking straight ahead more than looking at my ToughBook. Even if there's some overboost, the car was very responsive. Comparing this tune and coding to Malone is like comparing an ATV with a golf cart.

Happy to report I succesfully replaced the seals on the injector pump. It was a bit nerve racking, especially when i realized the mark I made was only on the quantity adjuster and not the pump itself too, but after some fidgeting I was able to get it to run and dial it in. Of no course, no job is complete without a wrench being throw at ya and mine came as a stripped allen bolt on the side of the pump. Had to pull the battery quick to drill it out but didnt slow me down too much. The video series on youtube, the video provided by diesel geek, and some old posts on this forum really gave me the confidence to get it done. With this being wrapped up, I have officially replace or fixed everything I unfortunately paid a **** mechanic to replace or fix. Put its running good, not leaking fuel or oil anymore. Hoping the next big job isn't for awhile when the timing belt will be up for replacing again. Now I need to dig into the forum more and see what kind of info I need to check out with the VCDS to make sure everything is about where it should be.

Better half complained her wagon was making sproing noises when parking, so naturally I ordered strut bearings.

Went to install them today. Swapped out the top nut on the driver's side in preparation for removing the mount, but when I lifted the car the spring perch dropped but not the spring

Turns out the top coil of the spring is AWOL. I don't recall seeing that before, usually it's the bottom coil that breaks, which is obvious because the ride height drops. Missing top coil didn't affect ride height at all, but it's going to be a PITA to remove that strut, maybe I'll cut the spring with an angle grinder 😳
Finally got to this today (had to "unborrow" my spring compressors first).

Never in all my days have I had to pound on a bolt like that - the strut clamp bolt refused to budge, couldn't turn it at all either. I must have whaled away on it for 10 minutes with a 5 pound hammer before it moved at all, another 5 minutes to get the end flush with the spindle, then a few more with a punch to knock it through  I dunno how fine dust works it's way into the spindle around that bolt, but that's what made it so recalcitrant.

On the bright side, the strut itself came right out with one hand :)

P2B, that fine crud sneaks in through the split in the mount. It for sure does not sneak in under the nut, or the bolt head. The middle, OTOH is quite open enough to let this in. I have got black PowerFlex strut mounts to install, and this could turn into a PITA for sure...
