You can buy just the tester without the kit, but I don't know if anyone in Canada sells them, Ebay maybe? Exchange rates, shipping and duties, price you pay for living in Paradise

Got a P1248 code yesterday. Doesn't come on right away, just after driving for awhile. Unless I stop and start back up, in which case it only takes a few minutes to come back on. Something new to look in to.

Replace fuel filter and run a can of diesel purge to start with.

I went to go grab the black leather interior i wanted to swap mine with, and I noticed my jetta back seats are some weird single hinge system covered with a plastic piece, so i wouldn't be able to swap the back seats with the more common double metal L hooks that are under the seats... Looks like just the driver and passenger seats would be exchangable.
I wonder if this is a unique BEW thing.
I noticed a bug with tan leather , not sure seat sizes are the same from beetle to jetta, but maybe ill look into that.
On the positive side, I just saved 300$ towards my needed future front end job!
I heard I may have a tune in this thing by the end of the week!

The Audi wagons of that era that we got here were A4 models (not to be confused with the A4 *platform* upon which the 1999-2006 G/J were built), that were platform buddies with the Passat. So, A4 wagon --> Passat, I can see that working; A4 wagon --> G/J - doubtful.

This is a first for me on this one... all the cam lobes are badly worn. But it was just not well taken care of, and I could hear the bad cam just starting it. The timing belt is also due. Got everything here and ready to go!

B5 Passat was based mostly on the B5 A4, but the rear is more like C5 (A6) if it's a 4motion. And in any case, the Passat is a little bigger than the Audi, especially when it comes to the interior. That said, I think Northern is just going to have to find Jetta Wagon rear seats, or look into making a Golf rear work?

Any of you Canadians know of a good compression tester for these cars? Everybody in the States gets the one from HF, I'm wondering if Canadian Tire or someplace would have a similar product. The nearest Princess Auto is 2 hours away.

About any old gauge will work of it's occasional use. Just beware that they can go out of whack pretty easy. The harbor freight I tested against my snap on gauge from burpod showed up reading 100psi. It's was otherwise accurate vs my snap on, just needed to remember to subtract 100 psi. I assume it was poorly handled during shipping, but wouldn't have given issue if used occasionally and not dropped or banged around.

I love the ventectomy. The fuel gauge doesn't move off full until I'm at about 130 miles. This was on a trip from Seattle to Portland for work. I got about 47mpg (using miles and gallons used).

I put in a .681 a month or so ago. I got the same mileage this trip as I did with the stock 5th. I think I had some head winds this trip though.

WHOA!!! I was super happy I got 600 miles on the last tank. 500 for half a tank is awesome!

I'd hazard a guess (or 3) looks like a v engine, either a v6 gasser (didn't they have a supercharged or turbo charged v6 back in the day?) Or a 6.5l turbo diesel. On the off chance you hit the lottery a duramax under the hood would be pretty cool.

TL;DR - fixed cruise control.

Spoiler: The long-winded version

Parents came by for a visit over the weekend - the backup camera that was working with the previous POS Android head unit wasn't working with the slightly less POS Android head unit. The new head unit had come with a camera as part of the kit, but we figured we could just swap in the new one and everything would be good Alas....no.

The camera power supply line included with the new unit had a little white wire loop built in - head unit wouldn't see the signal. Snipped the wire - head unit sees the signal from the backup camera. So, we set to work pulling the old power supply wire and installed the new one. Did some futzing with the left rear bulb tray wiring (which also has a trailer wiring kit wired in).

Fast forward to the next day - pops sends a message that cruise control no longer works. Dammit, methinks. Must've pooched something with the wiring back there - messed up a brake light signal or something so the cruise decided to take a vacation....or something (wiring not my forté).
So, he brings the car back over - was about to dive into that rear bulb tray wiring again, but decided to plug in VCDS and check MB006 - and I see that the cruise switch on the turn signal stalk isn't even working - no change to the status in MB006 / 4.

So, figure it must be the turn signal stalk - I've had more than one of those die over the years. And luckily had a spare on in the parts bin.
Pull off the airbag, steering wheel, clockspring, and as I pull off that turn stalk, holding back the big wiring harness, the little 10-pin wiring harness that plugs in vertically....suddenly it's just hanging there. Usually that's a PITA to unseat due to the location and the tiny little release tab.

So....figure that's gotta be it and just bundle everything back quickly. Do a quick check with VCDS - yep, all the buttons change all the appropriate zeroes to ones.

The moral(s) of the story:

• Verify before you tear into what you assume to be the issue (something something ass....you...me).
• Correlation ≠ causation.
• VCDS: If you own a VW, bite the bullet once and just buy one; your future self will thank you profusely tens if not hundreds of times

Going to start checking out the engine in my TDI parts car soon. It has a hole in the pan and I believe it was run for a short time without oil, so I'm thinking I'll pull the pan and check rod and main bearings, turbo, cam and lifters.
It has around 400k kilometres on it so from what I've read I should probably put new rod bearings in it while I'm there anyway.
It likely won't be much fun as I'll have to do it all in my gravel driveway... Going to be a pain keeping everything clean.
