Sounds like you need to wear plastic pants as well as gloves
And work in an air conditioned shop.

After the second shower, I ended up scraping up my back with kitty litter (because I literally only had kitty litter and not the proper oil absorbent crap on hand), along with residual oil, redline lightweight shockproof I had to pull out (when I took both flanges off), and dirt.

So my girlfriend needed to help me clean my back and the areas I couldn't reach. Yeah, I looked like I was homeless. We're expecting a lot of rain today, so I'm going to put some work clothes back on, pull the wheel/axle on the passenger side, reattach my right side flange, and start reassembling things. Need to torque down the dogbone mount bolts. I decided I'll install the battery last, just to remind myself that there aren't any fluids in the car (oil and gear oil). The ultra black RTV states it needs 24 hours to cure. Given how the previous gasket was compromised and some of that s#it ended up in the oil pickup filter, I'd rather let it cure and then add oil later (or tomorrow).

Oh, and I did something else yesterday. Wasn't sure if I was over or underfilled on my AC for DSOL. Coincidentally, I got my Chinese garbage line/gauge set from Amazon. I honestly just needed some fittings and a can tap and it was cheap. Now I see why; it's going back and I'll pick up something higher quality.

Anyways, my AC guy was here to work on my mother's AC next door. Picked his brain some. Ended up letting out some refrigerant while the car was running; idle AC was around 43, and the vent was blowing at 62. I saw references here on tdiclub to use blower mode 2, so I went with that.

Anyways, I drained enough out to get down to about 29.8-30 at idle. I also got that crap on my hands, some that floated onto the car, etc. The worst is getting a face full of it at the junkyard! Anyways... first pic is the temp I got at idle.

Second is revved up, still stationary. Somewhere between 1500 and 2200. I'm VERY happy with these temps. Previously, it was getting down to like the 50s. It was cold, but not as cold as DSEL.

Last thing I did - flushed and bled the brake system. Figured I'm already there, might as well, since I wanted to flush out the slave cylinder. By the looks of it, I don't think ANYONE has EVER flushed it out. OF course, that wouldn't be a shocker.

I never bother to toss a temp gauge at the vents after replacing the valve in the compressor, but I can tell you it's darn cold.

I did, because I could tell it wasn't getting cold enough. It obviously is now!

And on that note - finally got DSEL back together. Just need to clean up another oil spill and attach the skid plate.

Yup - I f**ked off my braided oil line, so I'm going to buy some from darkside along with a spare to keep on hand (which still ends up cheaper than buying domestically), and then I'll be done. Car obviously starts. Clutch pedal feels good, engine sounds normal. Looking forward to my first test drive.

Sooo...given my BEW's cam is showing some wear, and I want to renew its pumps, *AND it's DMF is showing some wear and a SMF will be going in I am going to just pull for R&R the whole thing. I have a second BEW I got, and it has half the miles, and its cam is not even throwing a suggestion of wear...

A VNT17 will go on, as well as a BRM intake and adapter pipe. Couple bits are going to get left in a box...LOL

Spare BEW got hung on a $99 HF stand. Turned and milled the flange for the racepipe. Will get a bit o' tubing Monday and fire the TIG machine. and get a BEW timing kit.

and a braided oil line...and IIRC Cascade German has 'em relatively decently priced. $69 plus shipping, vs $63 plus transatlantic...

I picked up a braided line off evibay for like $16.00. Showed up a few days later and works great.

Hmm.. and the quality doesn't look $hitty or anything? Darkside has 'em for $63 apiece, but shipping is high. Domestically, I'm looking at $80-90 apiece. I'm sure they all mostly come from the same place, but then, I've noticed darkside's items do seem to be a touch better than ebay equivalents, like say racepipes, for instance.

It's been on since last march. No complaints with it. I had to get a banjo to -4an adapter for the turbo. I see the seller doesn't offer it anymore, but has kits with the fittings for $28.00
Here's the link. Kinda thinking I bought a replacment line for this kit. Same seller I bought the line from.

I'll look them up and see if I can find that braided oil line again, because that is fairly cheap.

Given the seller is located in China, I'm going to pass on that.

finally hit one of my goals in wifes mk4 - BEW vnt17 automatic - 50.2mpg in daily driving :) 900mi with $40 added in (8.75 gal) and then filled to the brim with 9.36gal and 909mi. been getting closer over the summer with every tank being between 46-48.5mpg. she probably puts on half the miles with tooting around town, errands, some commutes and then we'll take day trips, go to my parents, etc in which case i usually drive and when i can usually do 75-80mph. i'm fairly happy with it for the conditions. i think if it saw more steady highway miles at 65-70mph it could likely be getting 55mpg as is, if not better...

it's also had a bit of a pull to the right for quite some time, i think it might be front sticky right caliper.. so perhaps it could be doing even better. try and finally check that out this week.

They ship from state side. I had mine in like 4 or 5 days.
I might just opt for getting it from @BleachedBora . I saw his product is made here. Believe it or not, I try and get as much as I can sourced in the US, then Germany, UK, other European countries, etc. But I try and avoid China as much as I can.

That said, I can probably get free shipping by ordering some .260 nozzles. I'm thinking I want more oomph in DSOL, and @burpod kinda has me convinced. Love the .260's in DSEL.

I used to think like that, till I had an experience with stainless steel hydraulic coupplers for our cat wheel loader at the township. Long story short, the factory ones were junk, didn't last long before they started rusting and leaking. The replacements the hydraulic shop found were Chinese made. About 1/8 the cost, and to my knowledge are still in service. We actually started getting the same brand fittings for all the trucks and equipment.

Took DSEL for a test drive. After bleeding my slave cylinder, holy crap does it shift good, and the clutch pedal is so smooth. I reused my old flywheel on the advice of some mechanic friends and a machinist. Cleaned it up with some 120 grit and non-chlorinated brake cleaner. Also swapped throwouts - one that I bought brand new wouldn't stay clipped to the fork, so I'm glad I caught that before stabbing the transmission. Pinched my braided oil supply line, but luckily, found I had a spare in my toolbox (same as what I'd ordered again from CascadeGerman). No leaks, car runs good, so now I get to start on my clutch break-in again. Time will tell as well to see if my oil pan is now correctly sealed. I used Permatex Ultra Black and let it cure a full 24 hours before putting in oil. Also resealed the 02J and changed out fluid, which clearly had some water intrusion at some point.

Checked my oil Sunday for kicks, it was about an inch over full (Car usually uses a bit). Smells like diesel.

New Tandem pump on the way.

Since I had that and the airbox out of the way... I noticed the inside CV boot was broken into 3 pieces (one missing). And when I removed it, the outer one was starting to crack at the outside of some of the accordion ribs.

I had ordered new injector seals, the proper seal install tools (t10056), and new reusable bolts for the injector rockers and injector hold downs. (before I found the growing oil level). So, I will be redoing the fuel system later this week/weekend.

Here's one for fun, I was pulling stumps at my son's house last weekend and across the street in the park they were doing a car show. So, I got to watch and listen as they all showed up. (For the size of the town, there were some really nice cars). An orange Corvette Stingray came rolling up, but it DID NOT SOUND LIKE A Corvette. My son and I dropped our stuff and went over to check it out:

There was a crowd around that car every time I looked over at it the rest of the day.

Finally wired spliced and wired up the signal wire from my MAP sensor on DSOL, so I can see what my boost looks like on ColorMFA while driving. Also discovered a really big crack on my windshield near the wiper cowl, so I filed a claim to get that replaced. And not mk4 related, spent some time trying to organize my toolbox. Turns out I have enough spare sockets to probably start keeping a set with me in the car.

What did I do today... and yesterday. Sent off a spare set of 2003 injectors to the shop I use in North Texas to install new .260 Wuzetem's that @BleachedBora sold me and sent @burpod a BEW ECU to see if he can work some magic on it, so I can finally sell my BEW wagon.

Today - picked up two RNS-510 rev E (for the mk6), and a rear wiper motor/nozzle for my mk4, to try and correct a problem. Also have upwards of 350 miles on breaking in the new clutch, and thanks to @burpod, I've learned to be easier on the peddle, yielding 45mpg on the way home (while trying to stay at or just below the 70-75mph speed limits). This is with the AC running (goes down to 40-43 degrees at the vent in DSEL while it's 99-103 outside).

As an aside, do you know if Matt has been able to land parts yet to start cranking out new ColorMFAs? He has me on his list, but haven't heard anything in a while (months).

I'll have to reach out to him on facebook. I had myself on his list, but technically need to be taken off, since Greg Menounos sold me his remaining ColorMFA that he did.

Apparently, there's a competitor - 3D Color MultiMFD. No clue on their availability, though.

I drove my newest acquisition, a Y2K white Jetta (sort of matches my Y2k Golf) as a new project. I drove from York, PA home over Friday and today. Just ahead of the storm. Or what was supposed to be a storm - it petered out before it got to me.

Anyway, besides finding several items that need to be repaired, I am pleased overall. Besides the cosmetic stuff (a few dents and interior seat stains) it drives fairly well (needs some suspension components refreshed, probably all of 'em) and is so bone stock that it hasn't even had a ventectomy done.

It gets good mileage - the first tank was from York, PA to the Sam's Club in Columbus, GA. 826 miles took 15.5 gallons of diesel. A tidy 53.26 mpg, and I wasn't doing a granny pace either. I may need to measure everything I can think of to figure out how to achieve this on my other cars!

Gotta get the cruise fixed though. VCDS shows the stalk switches moving correctly, so it is something else. I hope this fix isn't overly 'interesting.'* I don't like highway driving without cruise. My speed was all over the place.

Cheers,

PH

Helped #2 son change his fuel filter for first time (ALH).

when I pried up the thermo tee, it separated. Top came off, o ring part stayed in old filter. None available locally.

I got the bottom part out and reassembled the tee. Put some red grease hopefully to seal it. It fit tightly. In fact I couldn't turn the lower part after I pushed them together. Told him to order one, but this should be fine for now.

Changed my timing on DSOL to around halfway between retarded and dead on, then uploaded @burpod's new tune. I have yet to test it out, as I needed to come in to cool off. I was dripping all over the engine compartment when I was done. Curious to see how it is, even though I'm eager to get my .260-installed injectors back later this week!

Well... yes. The car was at a good price and was well maintained. Yes, there's rough spots, but reasonable for the age and price. If all else fails, I can use the drive train elsewhere, but I don't think it will come to that. I will have a better idea of the future of me and this car after I get a better look at it tomorrow.

Well, I got to finally experience true ALH mileage tonight. 68mpg average doing 29mph average, seeing who did and didn't have power; we lost power for about two hours from a severe thunderstorm.

Now if only I had an ALH-powered genset...

Alright...on the genset. Need an 1800 rpm generator for one( no sense spinning it at 3600 ). Speed at varying power needs to be maintaiined carefully( this is what sets the line frequency of 60 Hz ). This bit is important. Not having it over freq, and over voltage( likely at the same time ) are not in the ALH's ECU behaviour. It could be a solid governer could be coded in... :)

However, a smaller engine would likely be better as one can run closer to the max efficiency island...an ALH will likely be quite happy running to 40 kW continuous...
