Front or rear? Latter is a good bit easier, especially if you cut the business end flush with the metal it lives in (plate for axle stub?) first. Sooooo much easier to hammer out that way

Fronts just don’t have great access, and a punch that fits through the tone ring is almost too small for driving it out

Fronts…… then I clean the hole with a dremel and slightly enlarge it , also file down the ridges on Sensor and lube it with antisieze for future easy removal.

I found a 2 door golf with supposedly a bad manual transmission for $425
I'm going to go get it Friday. Its a beat up one with a cone filter and evrymod... but other than that, it's a 2 door tdi golf.

Took a quick spin in daughter's Golf yesterday with VCDS (after doing same with #1 son's B5 A4 tqm trying to diagnose lack of boost*). The TCM had no faults, and it did shift into all 4 gears. I guess it’s that the growl is just that loud, and consistent with road speed, where it seemed like it wasn’t upshift ing. Tomorrow she’s off work and bringing it by so I can look deeper into it.

*Son wanted me to help with low boost on his (my old) 99 A4. Thought a ride logging boost requested vs actual might help. Well, the mighty AEB motor doesn’t have this apparently! No requested boost, no MAP sensor. I guess you just watch the MAF data and should get x mg/s at xxxx rpm. Which he didn’t during a couple pulls. But then the coolant flange on the back of the motor decided to split during said pulls. That’s a fun one to change out.

Brothers car... Found the "smoking gun"... left side parking brake cable seized... replaced 1 rotor, both stub axles, stub axle bolts, both wheel bearings, both axle nuts, both ABS sensors and both parking brake cables. It really only needed the left side, but brother wanted it all done, (his money). Both caliper parking arms snap back like a slingshot, fast. Test drove and all temps within that of other MKIV's.

It will need parking brake tubes on both sides due to rust in the very near future. Had I known when I bought the parts, I would have bought them. Hindsight...

Finally replaced the lh forward wheel speed sensor on youngest daughter’s car. ABS and ASR are back up and working!

The "performance mods"
Oh and a Chinese turbo sitting in a box inside.
I guess I'm going to part it out. Looks like the door cards may be all there which I know are pretty rare, especially with the 2 door crank window manual adjusted mirror ones.

Anyone need some parts?

Man, if you weren't in Missouri, I'd take those doors complete off your hands to have as spare parts for the window mechanism and door cards...

I was thinking the same thing, somebody moved downstate from up north and said, “WOW, I don’t have to drive rusty vehicles anymore!”

Yeah but with a stripped interior, and transmission that is split in half, I could find a better body and swap it for cheaper.
I also currently have a good beater car, a 1.8t passat wagon with a 5 speed.

I replaced the fuel lines from the filter to the pump. Thanks to IDParts for selling the line set for only crazy money, not stupid crazy money (no sarcasm, they have the best price I could find on OEM lines).

Butt Dyno says things are better. Idle is smoother, seems to have a shade more oomph. The constant bubbles in the line are now just a small bubble (like pea sized) after it sits for a while, so it appears the old lines were in fact contributing to the air leak. I'm going to make up some hoses for the section on the other side of the filter, reusing the QD's that connect to the plastic lines.

I can't complain, by all appearances the fuel lines are all original to this 20 year old car. I doubt I'll live long enough to change them again.

My better half was out running errands this morning in the sedan and sent a video of coolant dripping on the ground when she came out of the store :(

I had her drive home with one eye on the scanguage (never got over 96C), pulled the skid plate and found a significant leak from the bottom of the radiator where it rusts due to salt exposure.

I called my go to guy for parts in a hurry (Perjad @ Precision Tuning) and had a new Behr radiator at the house in less than 3 hours (had an Uber pick it up) and car was back on the road before sunset

In a minor miracle, only one of the 7 bumper cover screws broke - the one closest to the radiator leak

My guru replaced the radiator on my son's '02 Golf last week. Before taking it to him I removed the grille and the little lower grilles and soaked the bumper cover screws with PB Blaster a few times. The all came out without incident, surprisingly.

Question: Doing brake flush, and I also replaced the front brake lines as they were cracking, will I need to run the ABS pump?

Yep, did that - and they had all been coated with anti-seize 3 years ago last time I had the bumper cover off.

The one that broke came out about one turn easily, then jammed due to salt corrosion of the exposed thread. I worked it back and forth quite a bit but only got maybe half a turn more before it broke.

On reassembly I could see and feel that the captive nuts in the lock carrier are rotting away as well, particularly the smaller ones for the headlights. Two of them could not be torqued at all, those bolts were installed with a blob of goop

So it goes maintaining 20yo cars in the salt belt...

No, provided you never let the level in the master cylinder get low no air will enter the abs pump. However, I usually run the ABS pump after flushing the rears and before the fronts on the theory it might help with getting old fluid out of the pump.

Whenever I'm at the junk yard next I plan to grab modules for all the doors and rebuild them in my spare time. I already replaced my drivers side module for the same reasons you did. Every time I opened the door the alarm would go off. Couple that with the range of my key fob being next to non existent made getting the alarm to stop a pain.
Time for a new battery in the fob??

Bondo mesh and fiberglass rust repair on the wagon hatch.

Not even close to perfect but not bad considering there were fist sized holes above both taillights and several smaller ones along the bottom of the glass. The owner (my better half) deemed it acceptable

Ask me in two years how it lasted...

Replaced the rear axle bushings today with Whitelines.

Son #2 (with 01 TDI) helped. Took 7.5 hours.

Did it with the beam still on the car. Brake line fittings looked waaaaay too crusty to try to turn (I had originally planned on pulling the beam).

Original bushes didn't look too bad, I hate to say.

Hardest part was getting the bushings back up into the brackets. They were too far aft and we lost a lot of time trying to cajole it forward so the bolt holes would line up.

Of course, second side went quicker, but not quickly.

Going to torque the lower shock bolts and beam pivot bolts tomorrow. Too tired to do that now.

When I replaced the passenger front window regulator, I didn't get the lock/latch all happily reassembled (because I was in a hurry), so the outside handle has been decorative since. Today I set out to take it apart and solve that.

The first thing I discovered is the plastic brace that holds the latch to the inner door panel had popped loose, and once the door panel was apart I could see it had also broken where it rivets to the latch. Nothing but a new part will solve that. I removed the latch from the door, set the little spring under the outer door lock lever, and then put everything back together sans the plastic bracket. Now the outer handle is only intermittently useless. The door generally opens on the 2nd or 3rd pull. The lock button is still strangely about 6mm or 7mm taller than the other three.

At least this has never happened on a customer's car.

If I'm feeling ambitious tomorrow, I'll try to find the fault in the wire to the rear lock popper. The popper works when I give it 12v with the Power Probe, but the blue/red wire isn't delivering 12v when pressing the lid handle, the switch on the driver door or the key fob.
