No need to remove the outer joint from the axle to replace inner.

So, you left the axle in the knuckle and removed the whole assembly?? And what, just pulled axle out of inner joint and let it hang? At that point just take the inner joint center piece of the axle and slide the boot on. If that's not what you did, I'm even more confused.....

so I took my fender liners out because they are broken in many places and falling apart and dragging/rubbing and am worried wheel will catch one and rip it out.. however, when I go to buy replacements, they only have two one for left/right. Are they the same for front and back? It doesn't specify and my front ones are too torn up to compare.

Well I bought the parts to build a new motor. Rods, bottom end rebuild kit, rings, gt1856v, .310 injectors, inter cooler hard pipes, upgraded oil cooler, colt2 cam, lifters, just trying to get this car running again. Been over a year since I drove it.
you posting updates as you go anywhere?

Took it on a road trip, 850km, mostly two lane twisties. I forgot how much fun they are compared to the boring divided highways I mostly drive.
I so miss the old roads. Sure, the 5 new bypasses cut off 30 min total off the 5 hour drive, but I'd rather give up the 30 min for the fun roads. Sadly too, they blocked off the old roads in places so you can't even take the old way even if you wanted to.

Managed to get new front rotors and pads on before work. Pins were dry as a fart.. not impressed. Need to get the new brakes hoses on, sometime soon. found the right strut is weeping oil. I knew I was getting a car that had the minimum done to pass inspection every year, but some of the things I've been finding wrong should have failed it/would have failed it if I was doing the inspection. I knew about the wrapped rotors and a few other things I was told/noticed was wrong but dang I'm getting sick of dumping money in it. Hopefully I'll have time this weekend to at least get the rear brakes and rotors swapped around.

Left and right front are different. IDParts appears to have both in stock, there may be a source nearer to you. Still available from the dealer too last time I checked.

I don't see rears on IDParts, but my local dealer shows them available. Again, left and right are different.

Broke my first vnt15. Unsure how many miles were on it, but definitely alot. Car has 462k on it. Easily had 300k on the turbo im sure. Just left a drive through, pulled out and stepped on it a little, heard "the noise" and saw the smoke. Told the old lady, we either just blew a c.a.c. hose or the turbo, and we will know very shortly lol (less than a mile from home). Go about 500 more feet, and of course the engine started to rev on it's own. Went ahead and pulled off the road, put it in 5th and stomped on the brake. Oil light never came on, and I didn't let the runaway get above probably 2,500 rpm's. Neighbor pulled me the rest of the way home. Pulled charge air cooler, all piping, etc. and cleaned. Good bit of metal. Drained probably close to a gallon of oil out of the c.a.c. Pulled glow plugs, spun engine over, and used a little tubing with a hand pump to suck the rest out. Threw on an old turbo I had in the garage. Did an oil change, and fired right up. One little piece of metal definitely shot out of the exhaust. Guess time will tell. Test drove well and definitely had more power. Was suprised to see how much wear the vnt ring had on it when held on top of the good used turbo's vnt ring.

Bought a full suspension/steering/etc. refresh for Orville. Buying some shifter bushing rebuild kits for both and considering the DG short shifter for wilbur.

When I got my 01 the shifter was hammered, the shift tower was sloppy as all get out. Buy the complete diesel geek kit and fiddle around till its all installed get the shift bushing kit too. Night and day difference. The shifter bushings are a bit of a pain, and getting the ball shimmed up is a bit of a pain. (I used shim stock I had laying around.

Finally got all my brakes done. Outside of pads and rotors it cost me a right rear caliper. It worked fine, but I couldn't get the piston to rotate back into its reset position. Trip to auto rip off then had my 4yo work the pedal to bleed the brakes and all is well. Will say it's the nicest reman caliper I've ever seen. Came with a new bracket and pins. Fairly impressed for $110.00. Was annoyed I couldn't get it back in, well and I needed to mess with brake fluid. Hate brake fluid and gear oil. Two of the nastiest fluids in any vehicle or equipment....

Finally fixed my last vacuum leak. I replaced all my rubber vacuum hoses with silicone. A couple of the hoses near the EGR valve were brittle and crumbled when I tried to remove them. This reduced my leak, but did not fix it. This past weekend, I replaced the hard vacuum line from vacuum pump to brake booster, and now my system is leak free. Here's the culprit...

Nothing! But just realized that I've owned the Golf for exactly 20 years and 1 week. Totally missed the anniversary last week but I'll try to remember its 25th birthday in October (manufactured 10/98).

Having just replaced a couple of CV joints, I will put CV grease up against your brake fluid any day of the week for title of "nastiest fluid".

Which brings me to my WDYDTYM4T....
Took off the LF strut to replace a wheel bearing...saw the condition of the springs, decided those should be replaced...and while there, may as well do the struts as long as it's all apart. THat's when I noticed the play in the CV joint on the driver side, so replaced that....then saw the boot over on the other side had a pretty deep wear line in one of the creases, so....why not.

Added two of the OEM spacers stacked on each side as well. And while everything was out, did the ball joints, tie rods, and swaybar bushings as well. SB bushings had been done before, but it everything else had 400K km on it as far as I was aware, so they were due.

And then we go to the rear, where I'm waiting on some wagon springs to go with the 20mm spacers I have for that.

Today, I drove my MKIV to work.

Shortly after, a customer's 2022 Sprinter arrived on a flatbed. Customer did his own oil change. Customer failed to replace the o-ring he removed from the filter cap. Customer now has a brick where his 3.0 liter v6 diesel used to live, but on the upside, 12.5 liters of oil is marinating his engine compartment, front suspension and most of the undercarriage, so concerns of future rust are greatly reduced. This will certainly provide solace when I deliver the invoice.

After work, I drove my MKIV home. It ran very well.

Nah, I'll take grease any day. It doesn't have the nasty gear oil smell, and it doesn't remove paint or corrode everything it comes in contact with like brake fluid. If we're going for worst fluid use ever been around, hands down goes to the oil out of a deere water pump that blew a coolant line and ran till it locked up. The smell was just terrible and oil was basically a thick jello like consistency. I have a sample bottle i filled with the oil. Just taking the cap off is enough to make your stomach churn.

Ah, hmm, yes. I’ve had that happen with the one in my Dodge. Ouch.
Also gets shockingly cold sometimes with the a/c on in 5th, as it’s right in front of one of the dash vents in that gear.

I'll bet it will be cold this winter as well. For now I've just been popping an old knit glove over it when I park, which helps a bit. When it's not burning me, it feels very nice in the hand, so I'd like to keep it.

When I had an Audi TT shift knob in my Jetta I kept a (beer) can koozie in the car and would put it on either when I parked, or use it like an oven mit if I forgot to cover it. Either way, it made the car drive able without burning my hand.

Excellent idea. I was thinking of being more complicated, but that should work just fine (and better than the knit glove).

I put a new driver's side window motor assembly in mine. Sadly didn't fix problem, switch works, if i swap to passengers side it works that window. I think the wire loom in door is bad. Probably broken wire, yuck. May have to take off door
