Man! I suppose it could be worse, you could live in elk/moose country!
Well, here in Texas Hill Country, it's deer and wild hog country. Never hit a wild hog, although I've had two close calls, and that's a lot worse than hitting deer.
There was this in-car video of someone hitting a deer, the deer flipping through the air, landing, and then getting up and running off!
I believe it. Last night's deer looked like he had two broken hind legs, and yet he still managed to limp away; the Sheriff was going to put him out of his misery and let me take him away to dress and gut had he still been there. In fact, EVERY time I've hit a deer, they've managed to still move somewhat after colliding with my car.

Nothing earth shattering but it's been a long wait to get the correct center caps. I bought the wheels used over the winter without centers. Ordered a set from a chinese ebay retailer and they sent the wrong ones after waiting 5 weeks.... got a refund. Ordered from dealer, correct set arrived today. I like them.

I just replaced the antenna base, and for the first time in 1-1/2 years have radio reception again.

Now I get to go back into it and find out where the grounding fault is, since it has no AM, and a bit lower FM reception than I suspect it's capable of...

That's the good side! I'll be able to save the passenger fender. Driver fender will need to be replaced, missing steel at the bottom. Passenger rocker has a tiny hole visible, I suspect the thing is rotten up front or near it. Driver rocker is toast up front... about 5 inches is rusty, will need a rebuild.

I'm going to tackle this soon before it's worse.

underwhelmed, it would be great if you could create a thread covering your rocker work. I'm still trying to decide how I'm going to approach my rockers (both the front ends are pretty much gone; both fenders need replacing). One of the first things I did to the daughter's car- cleaned out behind the wheel well liners: packed with mud- not rust (PNW is kind that way).

I'm going to do as much as I can myself because of lack of budget. I was quoted over 1000$ to fix driver side rocker and supply/paint a fender that red. (note that anything red is $$ due to the paint cost over other colours so maybe 250 of that 1000 was paint cost alone for the bodyperson)

I have no intention of spending 1000 for that repair. It's pretty bad at this point so I have to stop spending money on center caps etc and get on with it. Passenger side above will be easy.

It wasn't today, but a couple days ago what I did was purchase mine.

Started thread here to introduce it.

Looking forward to having more items/updates to put in this thread.

Finally got the old, worn out dogbone off and the new one on. Also replaced the voltage regulator and the leaky power steering rack bellows. Lower control arms are off, awaiting new hardware.

The old blue mule got a new Kenwood head unit. I installed most of it last night and then made some finishing touches this morning. What a bear getting all the wiring to fit in behind the stereo.

The Bluetooth/phone works well and was easy to set-up. The BT Audio seems to work well for my Podcasts...I guess it doesn't take much to impress a guy that was using a cassette tape adapter huh?...lol.

I tried a couple hands free calls and got varying feedback from the people I talked to. Couple people said I sounded just fine, and a couple others said I sounded like I was a long way away from the Mic (which is mounted up on the ceiling just left of center).

Replaced the MAF Friday. Been running around with VCDS hooked up checking values. Looks like the computer continues to adapt. Checked injector balance, and pump timing. She's starting to run better now!

No a/c in the 2-dr. I checked and there's plenty of refrigerant, so it isn't that. Both radiator fans running. And... oops, the compressor isn't turning. Fuses are all OK.

I decided to check on electrical potential before ordering a new clutch. No voltage at the splice (yeah, PO's work... ) so I decided to start checking up the line to see where it went and check why there's no voltage at the clutch. Found a broken wire. Spliced it together, and cold air.

Yay! I love not having to buy parts.

Cheers,

PH

Changed out the shifter and boot with a NB 5sp shifter I got on ebay from Bora Parts. Had to use some Gorilla glue with the old mount to get the leather to adhere to the mount. Couldn't beat it for 30 bucks, with blue stitching on the side. Next up will be a dieselgeek short shifter.

I'll have to check that out, one of my horns is out. Want a beep from the 60's Beetle or that would sound cool. How was in install? Use factory mount? Splice in OE plugs?;)

Drove down to Golden, CO to dieselland and had Anuthee install my dieselgeek panzer plate FMJ, and had him look over the turbo. Unsurprisingly, the turbo is worn, the injectors are out of balance, and so it's time to start saving up my money for some major updates next year.

So did Anuthee pull the injectors out & pop test them? Lots of play in the turbo? How many miles on your ALH? Just basically what to know how to do this myself if I can is all!

Thanks,
Dave

Hey Dave - I believe he just checked the play in the shaft. He did not remove the injectors but it's not hard to plug in VCDS and look at the balance.

I have almost 190k and have been running rc3 then rc4 since the car was 25k miles old.

I have a thread entitled "bogs down off idle" or thereabouts and I've been trying to diagnose that's been a combination of things of which the biggest change has been a dying MAF. This I diagnosed using myturbodiesel.com advice and VCDS. Out of balance injectors might add to the rough take-off, but I've had these injectors for about 150k miles, which is well before I had any issues at all. So, it's still a bit of a mystery, but the symptoms are livable for now.

Hope this helps!
