So the female end of the zip tie is big enough to "grab" the panel, without tearing through?

I loop the zip tie through the new plastic hole, up through slit of the panel and insert male end of zip tie into female end of zip tie.

I'll make a video and/or take some pics.

Junkyard fun

Went to the junkyard today found a 99 golf with an automatic and a alh... So the car was t-boned so I removed the 11mm pump and lo n behold on the bottom was a Aluminium skid plate made by evolutionimport.com, I removed that with the hardware and went to see how much they want for all of this... Waiting in line I imagined paying 150,200,250 and being happy to get a bigger pump and a skid plate which was worth 299 new... Drumroll please $23.00

Cut out and welded in rocker panels from a parts car. Alot of work but mine were rusted to dust. Also got the rest of my wiring done for my auto to manual swap.

Golf is Back!

New heater core, blower motor, cluster cover, door gaskets, switch to Jetta dash vents, and .700 5th gear.

I've owned this car for 5 years and it's been a journey. Really haven't had that much use out of it. But now, I hope, it's ready.

I like the Jetta vents better. You can close them all the way, they adjust better, and you can use a phone clip on them.

Yeah I started looking into this since a couple of my Golf's vents are broken...I don't think any of mine are lighted either but I'm not 100% sure. Except for the center buttons/heated seat knobs.

Maybe i'll start looking for a set...

I have a Jetta GL wagon, with the Jetta vents. They are not illuminated. Maybe the GL models don't have the illumination?

I like the Jetta vents, also. The dash looks pretty smoooth with the vents fully closed.

It was challenging on the Golf because the '99.5 has different plumbing to the vents than later cars. So having the dash out was the time to do it. If it hadn't needed the heater core I wouldn't have bothered.

Today I installed a dimmer circuit for the fog lights. I originally had them wired up as DRLs (instead of the low-beams). But that turned out to be problematic. So now they're hooked up to ignition power, controlled by a dimmer switch.

So, why the dimmer switch? These LED fog lights are insanely bright! I actually had a road rage incident where someone was offended by the brightness. Now I can turn them down to a tolerable level, and crank 'em back up on the back roads.

I made the mistake of purchasing and installing the aluminum trim surrounding the HVAC dials. This ranks pretty high on the results/ease of installing ratio:

Only problem is, now I want more! That brushed aluminum looks really nice.

Checked my lift pump and found it’s not working, turns out it has not been working since I purchased the car in 2018, I now I’m about to order one!

Golf vents aren't illuminated, Jetta are. I didn't bother with that.

A little more detail ...

Golf vents aren't illuminated (maybe gasser MK4 R32 were??).
Most Jetta were up until either 04 or 05, then only (gasser) GLI vents were.
These are typically easy to find, but hard to find in decent condition - flaking paint/coating and busted vent slats. Especially the drivers vent/headlight switch surround.
If you go "yard hunting" for a set, take the time to go as deep in the dash as you can to get the car side connector and as much lead/wire as you can.
Take some old credit cards/firm gift cards with you, they work well to get in between the dash and the edge of the vents to get them out without marring the edge or flaking off the black coating. Don't forget the torx screw in the drivers and center sections ... and maybe the pass side one, can't remember.

At one time I had some OEM NOS center vent surrounds, but I think I installed/sold all I had.
