I came home!!

I was able to limp the diesel back home to Tally from Melbourne (330 miles) after blowing the lower intercooler hose off the turbo. There was a 2.25" T-bolt clamp on it, but the threads were stripped out due to it being too big. So when I got home I replaced it with a 2" on, all better.

When are the intercooler pipe kits going to be available??? Gahh I don't want this to happen again!!

I've heard about the 80% kits: They're supposed to be a great street LSD. And I'm getting some prototype pipes off to a fabricator later this week: It'll be a couple of months for the custom silicone but they should solve a lot of problems.

Nothing big, but I got my emblem letters last night and put them on. The font doesn't match exactly, but it's pretty close. Yes, I have the "4" to replace the 3 when the time comes (which should be pretty soon).

I painted my calipers red and put Brembo stickers on my OEMS - Yes stickers, it fast, fast stopping, red, fast. Zoom. Yes seriousily, now my brakes scream expensive. The real joke is if I ever find my car up on concrete blocks and my car is missing the very cheap rims and tires and the brakes removed. Then and only then will I know my job was complete.

Just got my 3" down pipe today (after a month an a half of waiting for it to ship) and I will be taking on the installation in my mech. class next Monday night, just hope I don't run into to many problems using the OEM exhaust.

Well...

I started out the day by doing a full intake cleaning on the Golf. I took the opportunity to do an EGR Delete, using the kit I purchased from dieselgeek.

I also received, via the mail, a euro license plate for the front of the car which I had ordered a few weeks earlier. Unfortunately it didn't come with any screws to secure it to the front bumper, so that will have to wait until tomorrow.

I'm also looking forward to getting my car Rocketchipped this coming Saturday at the Michigan GTG.

Hey, I have to do that too. Probably this weekend. Any hints/gotcha's?

Actually, yes. When I realized that I was going go have to pull a coolant line off of the end of the cylinder head in order to install the kit, I shuddered at the amount of coolant I thought I was going to spill all over the place. At first I thought of jacking up the front end, dropping the skid plate and draining the coolant into a bucket via the drain on the bottom of the radiator. I really didn't want to have to jack it up and pull the skid plate off though so I tried something different. When I was replacing the plastic Tee fitting with the brass straight nipple that comes with the kit I hooked my mityvac up to the lower line that the tee was connected to. I used the mityvac to pull about 1/3 gallon of coolant out of the system and into a jug before I hit air and couldn't drain anymore. Then, on the hose that runs from the egr cooler to the firewall, I disconnected the end from the egr cooler. By using my mouth and blowing air into that hose I was able to drain another few cups out of the system via the egr cooler. Finally when I pulled the hose from the cylinder head I only lost about an ounce of fluid onto the transmission.

Peter,
These sound pretty good, I'll be looking forward to adding one.

yesterday:

changed the air filter and the cabin air filter.

need to do oil soon. . . .real soon.

also put in the "street" dogbone from tdiparts. I have nothing but positive things to say. NO added vibrations or noise. Just smoother shifting (really!) and less torque steer.

Then looked at the MB. need a new fan clutch. then spent hours on the "other" forum. . . now its raining. . . and I need to order parts.

Glad you like the dogbone. I have the same impressions on my wagon.

I just drained the MTL out of the '97 and refilled it with OE fluid. The transmission is noticeably quieter.

Changed my 6 speed fluid to the oem stuff. Wow night and day difference in noise levels. I thought I had a bad syncro(might still have one) but that noise is gone.
Also did a getto ft end allignment with a tape measure and calibrated eye.:eek:Still haven't had time to get it vw for an alignement after changing the tie rods. The steering wheel is straight and it doesn't pull any more.:D

I had this problem when I did mine. If I was doing it again I'd just drain the whole coolant system and refill it later.

Spent the whole afternoon and thoroughly washed, clay barred, waxed, then detailed the tires and rims on the Golf. Also installed the euro license plate on the front that I got a few days ago. She looks amazing, I'll get some pics up once I find the cord to the digital camera.

Finally took pics of my "new" tails  They're a lot darker than it looks in the pics. Click thumbnails for bigger version.

The problem is that my engine now looks like this :

Put a new fuel and air filter in the '97. Headed for Michigan tomorrow. Both filters have been the car for about two years, but only about 5K. I thought the bio sitting in the fuel filter for that long might need refreshing. Didn't have to pre-fill the filter and the car started right up: gotta love the lift pump.

I replaced by fuel filter and air filter today.

yeah!

Afterwards the car wouldn't start no matter how many times I cranked it for 20-30 seconds. I went down to the local auto parts store and bought a hand vacuum pump, primed the new fuel filter, and it started right up.
I have 48,000 miles and this is the first time I've replaced the air filter. I'm too lazy to go look at the Bently to see the suggested service interval for the air filter, but I must say... the combination of new fuel and air filter has really put some pep in the car! ... maybe it's just my imagination?

I liked the pics of your new tail lights. Where did you get them and how much did they cost? I'ld love a pair for my golf.
Thanks :)

I got them off of vortex like that for $140 I think? Somewhere around there. But they were professionally done at Jon's Tinted Tails

I'd really love to get a set of the R/C/R/C (example) and have him black out the red pieces. That would probably look really great.

If I had a car on the road I might even do it ;)

vnt 17/22 installed... not quite running yet

the last couple weeks i've been working on installing my 17/22... here's some pics:

http://picasaweb.google.com/burpod/TurboInstall

let me say, the pd egr cooler is a real PITA to get out, the install has been slow going due to my ineptitude and lack of all the exact tools required (mostly to get that stinkin egr cooler out) and other little hangups.. maybe i'll do a write-up sometime

now i just have to get a couple IC pipes bent to fit my silicone elbows. also a few larger sized t-bolt clamps...

so what has gone in: vnt 17/22 hybrid, pd150 intake manifold, custom intake pipe with 2 taps, and soon custom IC stainless IC pipes w/silicone elbows (still stock IC for now)
what's gone out: stock intake, the egr cooler and related bits

Awesome, I just installed the 17/52 into my BEW with egr/cooler delete with RC4 and it rocks - no lag, and no smoke at 22.5psi. and 70mg/R fueling!

We'll meet up soon for an update of one's and zeros.

;-)
