Has anyone had to replace any of the frame or major drivetrain components under the car yet?

I try to keep things clean and dry under there. Even use rust paint on various areas when I've got the car up to change the tires (winters and summers), but the rust is starting to get bad. (It's the salt they use on the roads in winter.)

Oddly the body is still rust free, except right behind the mud flaps, but its just surface rust so far and only in that little cavity behind the mud flaps....not visible unless you remove the flaps. I've been able to keep it in check so far.

If I ever win the lottery I might get a lot of the frame redone in titanium or something. :D

I had the pleasure of driving my old TDI, first diesel i've owned today, so down on power... it 2nd gear was SAD, zero acceleration on the slightest incline... Was thinking vaccum issue turbo not producing requested boost for the RPM, but then wondered, i had done a timing belt quite some time ago, i wonder if the belt had stretched... it was retard severely... so gave her a quick adjustment and she was back to the way i remember her nice and peppy... well for a mostly stock ALH lol

Debating on buying it back, refreshing all the suspension and driving it some more... shes at 560,000km!

I was going through the owners manual and low & behold, guess what I found. Just think, I'm the 5th owner. So cool!

I also find it interesting that my TDI get much better mileage that the EPA estimate where as every gasoline car I've had got worse.

I took it to the DEALER!!!!!

just some warrantee work. I had the exhaust flap replaced, and oddly the washer fluid level sensor. It failed, telling me to always add fluid, even though the reservoir was full.

1st and hopefully last time at the dealer. I'm just a few hundred miles shy of 36k.

all future maintenance/repairs will be handled in house!

Okay a current estimate is 30 and 42. Why is your 01 so much nigher? Some kind of Canadian conversion?
All the ALH engined units were up in that range for the 5-speed, a little lower for the slushbox. ALHs did not have a DPF, nor do they use extra fuel for the cat regen.

FYI some members have found that Rain-X brand washer fluid will cause this. It seems to be something to do with the chemical composition of the fluid itself. I've not yet run Rain-X in my Golf (I've been too cheap) but I have a bottle I'm about to chuck in. If it sets off the sensor, then whatever... it'll just be one more beep and one more lamp on the Christmas-tree dash (three beeps & three lights for the ABS-EBD fuse each startup). Really have to get around to r/r the ABS sensor...

BINGO. That's what did it.

I had not even heard it was an issue. I think my dad bought me gallon of rainX thinking it was good stuff.

And Peter I was treated well, but I didn't go to PC. For time restraints I went to Quirk.

Complete refresh of the entire suspension. Koni STR T with Shine Springs, Polo strut bushings and new hardware. Rides and handles great compaed to the tired Koni Reds with V6 springs. This is a great combination for the money.

I'm nearing completion of the cluster project:

I also figured out the glow plug issue: I was trying to power it up through a circuit that isn't used anymore. The GP light on turned on via can-bus in my car, so it should work fine. I ran some output tests with VCDS today and it lit up fine.
It's currently coded for 160 mph so I'm going to swap over some TDI sport faces. I'm bummed as I'll either have to drill a hole for the light sensor or keep it covered...
I have a few questions about adapting it to the car:
1) I read somewhere it's possible to just copy the existing info from the EEPROM in the car's current cluster and paste it into the new one, bypassing having to adapt keys. Anyone tried this?
2) If ^^ isn't true, do any of you know how to get the PIN out of the dump? Or could you tell me where to look? I can provide dumps of my old and new cluster.
3) I got the MFA stalk and repair wires at a junkyard on Friday, so it's pretty much all ready to go in once I get the coding issues figured out. Thank you, Passat wagon.

Built a wiring harness for my e-code headlights and installed it into my car, finally have working fogs. Wired in the relay in the relay panel as per factory spec...Total cost of install $10 much better than paying for a harness and it works just like the Germans wanted..

SirSipsAbit, do you feel much of a change with the unibrace? I think it's an interesting item.

Does it actually change the feel of the car?

Installed BFI stage 1 engine and tranny mounts last night. Washed her up today. It's gonna take some getting used to the vibes at idle but man the powertrain feels solid instead of rocking back and forth with every throttle position change.

Makes it very fun to drive hard!

Still looking
Decided to go ahead and clean out my intake. WOW what a pain! Glad I did it, it was getting nasty.

Waiting for a clip for my intercooler pipe to arrive at the dealer tomorrow. Can't wait to put it all back together and drive it again!!

Also found a wire that was snapped in half (by the egr valve). I'm assuming that's what my EGR SES code was all about. Went ahead and fixed that.

Should be a happy car tomorrow :D

It makes a difference

My car has 31,000 miles on it. It has been a pretty solid car with few rattles and squeaks. I must have had a door seal squeak, even though it was always subtle, it is now gone. Handling wise, the sand covered blacktop curvy country roads should be slippery in the corners.....but the car is sticking really well. There is a positive change in performance. Plus it's a sweet skid plate for my rawtek exhaust!

my car today: ...

I installed side window deflectors .... WeatherTech .... so smooth and easy. Dark black on tinted windows with black paint.. Looks cool. Next is splash guards ... what's best ??? I prefer small and fitted. How come they were not on the new car? My winter highways have loads of sand and that will do a hurtin' to the paint. Cheers!

Might be worth a try on the Golf. They make one for my NA Miata, which is the car that really needs it, but it won't fit over the stock exhaust. I don't think the body of the Golf is as stiff as it could be. I can hear the doors working on bumpy roads.

You still have the stock exhaust on the Miata? I replaced mine almost 20 years ago! Oh, and I do have the FM Butterfly Brace on mine. I went to the Unibrace website but they don't make on for my '05 Jetta Wagon. :(
