I di not want to start another oil filter thread but I did not find any threads on this subject doing a search. I used to use purolator filters but they don't carry the one for the 96 tdi.and i was using the Hastings filter and my local store says they were bought out by Baldwin and they don't carry it.I would like to buy the filter from a local store and am having a hard time finding one.All they seem to have is the Mobil 1.I see the mann filter is available localy but see it on;y has 4 holes compared to 8 on the other filters.I don't know what difference it makes. The Bosh is available. Is that a good filter? Are they about the same in quality? Or just use name brand filter except a Fram or STP filter that Auto Zone sells?

Mann or Hengst are the best choice, but you can get away with cheaper ones. Just be careful, some of the really cheap ones can blow when subjected to the cold 90psi these engines can produce.

Mann for my B4. Seems to be just the right size to slip in between the frame and power steering line and oil pan. Others are slightly bigger and are a fight.

thanks for the response. I see the mann only has 4 little holes compared to other filters.I was wondering what difference it makes.Just seems like the filter with more holes would flow oil better.Any comments on Bosh filters?

Whether there is a flow difference or not, it will most likely not make any difference in typical usage.

I think your kinda looking for a problem that dosent exist. Mann filters are generally considered top of the line and and recommended by many german car people. Fram might have more holes but I wouldn’t say its better hahaha.

Mann, Mahle or Hengst. If I don't have any...which is rare....I will buy a Wix or Napa gold locally.

I bought a mann. I was wondering what those two tabs are on the end of the filter? Looks like something to grab the filter to loosen it. Is there some kind of special VW tool filter wrench?

It's to remove the filter. I use my own tool made from a bent screwdriver that fits between the slots. Just make sure when you bend the screwdriver that the flats are also in the same orientation.

MANN user here too.

I've been wedging whatever I could but I like your tool. I think I have the exact same screwdriver... time to give it new life

The Bosch premium has the highest advertised filtration efficiency of any cellulose filter available for the TDI.

What he said. I keep a bunch of spares, since I have so many cars, and they're ALL Hengst and Mann.
