...it looks as if it would be better to organize a TRUE WEST COAST TDI FEST it will require months of planning. It is going to require a few organizers and a few volunteers. First, can we get a show of hands on how many people would be interested in having it and give 2 months that would be viable in your opinion:

I would be very interested and Late June or August/Early September would be best for me and most families with school-aged kids.

Anytime in the summer would probably work for me. I know that Brian (JetPuf) and I would drive to SF if we had to...
Anyway, I'm looking forward to following this thread over the next year!

The week before memorial day is when a big art festival goes on in northern nevada every year (www.burningman.com). Alot of hippie types out there who like TDI's for the ecology and a good portion of the rest of californians that might be interested in visiting the fest to discover the joys of tdi ownership will be out there too. The weekend of Aug 25, 2005 would be nice for peeps like me coming from socal, spend the weekend talkin shop with tdi folks then continue on to burningman on monday.

If you guys are serious about this, now is the time to get a proposal together! Sounds like it's time for it to get to the West Coast!

To start we need 5 or so main organizers together and determine a location not far from these organizers that would logistically work. Traditionally the date has been Labour Day weekend, but if that is an issue it can and has been moved before.

The key is to get something hashed out now.

OOH! this looks ingeresting! the first thing that comes to mind is Hot August Nights in reno... that could be a possible location for a more western TDI fest, and it's a car-show thing to start with! Criticism? Ideas??

Ive always thought Las Vegas or San francisco. if people are coming from all over they should go to a place that they would want to see. somewhere they would go for vacation. there is alot to do in these two citys. I know i can't speak for everyone but alot of people will want to go out and see the sights too. we have to keep that in mind.

SF or the Monterey area might be good locations. From either the wine country is a drive away. Monterey is part of Stienbeck country, and SF is, well SF. Either place, bring something warm to wear.

The only bad thing about Vegas is there might be more gambling to earn new parts than discussion/gtg-ing.

Monterey is nice and so is San Fran. I agree with the idea of invading these two locales.

Not that I'm against the dice, though...

While San Francisco might pull more club members from up north, Monterey is more scenic, with likely better parking. Both cities, however, would command high hotel/motel rates.

Why not pick a smaller town or city, with plenty of room, cheap hotel/motel rates and nearby camping facilities? There's lots of open ground between Vancouver and San Diego, or between Idaho to Arizona.

To me, a TDI fest is about diesel cars and drivers, not glitz.

One quick thought. Where are you guys who are interested in thing living? Logistics wise it might be better to have it not too far away from where a 'core' group of organizers reside.

Small town, oldfashion country style roads, lots of space and tons of canyon runs... That will be at Ojai valley.

Driving Directions

Take US-101 N (if you're coming from the LA area) or US-101 S (if you're coming from the Santa Barbara area).

Take the CA-33 exit towards Ojai.

When the freeway ends, keep going straight through Casitas Springs and Oak View.

Go straight when you come to the turn-off for Maricopa Highway (where 33 goes to the left).

The road becomes W. Ojai Ave. Follow it for another 2 miles and you will be in downtown Ojai.

I agree. I plan to attend, no matter where it is. But when I get there, I want to meet other TDI owners, hopefully from all over the West. Vancouver and Edmonton, as well as Salt Lake City and Tucson.

Reno is probably the most centrally-located city. JetPuf, what is this Hot August Nights' thingee?

But perhaps those from the most-distant locations ought to suggest how far they'd be willing to travel? And where they'd like to meet?

I think VW Derf brought up an important point! The planning commitee should be close to where the event is going to take place. I think we should start again from scratch and come up with location ideas and see how many member who are willing to participate are close to that location.

Hey T-Red;
Hot August nights is like one of the biggest "Hot Rod" events on the West Coast. Bigger than the "GoodGuys" in Pleasanton or @ the Oakland Colosseum. It's huge!!! Stock & hopped up muscle cars from the 30's to the late 60's. Cars come from all over the States to attend. It's an annual event........

Well, I still think Reno is conveniently located for the most people, geographically speaking. But if we ignore the folks in Edmonton, Salt Lake City, Bozeman and Tucson, most TDI owners in the West are along the coast from Vancouver to San Diego. So somewhere in the middle is best, and that's probably the Bay Area. Though anywhere in northern California or even southern Oregon is okay with me. Like I said, I plan to attend no matter where.

Hey - I like Reno! However, if it is during Hot August nights I can tell you there will be no hotel rooms at all. Most are probably already booked up for next year's Hot August nights.

Now, this weekend was the "Best of the West Rib Cook Off" (more than you can eat), next weekend is the Ballon Races (very nice) and the weekend after that is the National Air Races. Any of those are good too!

I would come out for a West Fest from Philly. I have family in AZ I would visit them before or after. I am also wanting to do a Cross country Road trip in my TDi.

FYI Here are items about hosting a Fest. It sounds like a group back east may be hoping to host it this year....

Fred, I am about as far from British Columbia as you are from Toronto. But I would be willing to drive to BC for a West Coast Fest... especially if you were one of the hosts!

We could probably put together a convoy of San Diegans and Los Angelenos.

Only 2200 kilometers? (1300 miles) Even better!

I've never been to BC, and would love to visit your fair province.

But I suppose somewhere between San Francisco and Portland would be more convenient for more tdiclub members.
