well, of course i get a ****ty response from the dealer. They offered us $16700 for our trade. KBB values it at $20,570 for a trade in, NADA says $18600 for a trade in. Even the salesman and the inspector guy were impressed with its immaculent condition. He said FULL MSRP only for the passat. I told him no go. A St Louis dealer had offered me $17k for our car sight unseen and $1k off a passat. He said, well, i would go to them then. i hate my local dealer.......

Ive heard nothing but good things about this Chris at VW of Langhorne, PA. Ive also seen some of his posts and he seems very knowledgeable and willing to work with you in a reasonable manner.

If i had time for a 17 hour drive and wasnt trading a car in, i would probably call him up. However it is hard to negotiate your trade unless you are there. If i am there, then all my cards are on the table. If you are ready to buy, call Chris up.
Chris can and will give you a trade in quote....keeping in mind they make money off used cars....dont expect what they need to sell the car for!
He gives a straight up no BS quote no negotiations required.....
I will probably be buying my 3rd car from him in the next year!:D

Those are the trade in values not dealer/private party values i listed. I understand everyone has to make money off used cars as that is why they are in business. I am not asking retail/dealer price for my car but rather the "trade-in" value.

Please stop recommending that i go to Chris. I know he is a great guy/dealer but i am not driving over 17 hours each way for a car and adding the expense of fuel/lodging. I was just venting my frustration at my local dealer. We just arent going to get a TDI now.

No problem here! Go Luck in your Endeavors......
If you are not going to listen to recommendations why bother Asking??
Please show me where i asked for a recommendation? I have just been sharing my dealer experience. I dont mean to be curt with you or anyone else but i dont need people to keep recommending something that i clearly said i was not interested in. Driving 17+ hours to PA just isnt right for my situation.

I am looking for a reasonable deal within a few hundred miles of my home. I have no reason to take $3500 below trade in value for my car or pay full msrp + $750 since those two costs negate a lifetime of savings from owning the TDI probably. I dont "have" to have this car today or in six months. If they give me what i want or close to it, fine, if not, oh well.

It is very frustrating with the lack of back and forth. that is how dealing is supposed to work, i lowball them, they shoot high then back and forth till we can each live with the deal. They just arent interested, it is MSRP or nothing for them. Ive seen several others get their cars for $24900 otd or mid $25k otd. These guys arent interested in that at all.

I may try again on the last weekend of the month but they dont have the stickshift right now anyway.

do your homework, go to a big city, find dealers that have what you want, and get bids from all of them. Adjust their expectations from the start about your idea of price being at or 300,400, 500, whatever, under invoice, and have the money and the time and the balls to make it happen. Sell your other vehicle privately, and then come in with just money into the deal. Money talks, everything else walks. You have 8 days right now until end of the month to make it happen, get on the phone to the dealers that have what you want, deal with internet managers, leave your name and your number, and hint that you would like to get it done this weekend. They'll call you back, don't worry. Explain you are on a tight budget, it is more a want than a need. One of them out there will be hungry enough for a smoking deal. If you want to grind them, low ball them with an offer from you that is good today only. Cold rainy Weekdays, when no one is looking at cars, are better for this than Sunny weekends. You have to make it happen, not them. What color are you looking for? 6 speed manuals are the holy grail of PIA to buy passat TDI's currently, you have to be willing to travel. Hint: if they can make money on financing a portion the car, the price may be better, but you need to get in writing that you can pay off the loan early. That would give you some time to sell the other car yourself. Gotta have a lot of dealers playing against each other to get the best deal. More dealers to do this in big cities.

Niner's right. I would further suggest that you already have cash or financing (e.g. Capital One's Blank Check) in-hand allowing you to close the deal same-day. If they ask to allow them to beat the rate if you finance, let 'em have a crack at it.

On a dealer's floor plan, a sale today at $750 below MSRP is almost always worth an MSRP sale in a few weeks. Don't be afraid to remind them that Chattanooga will be producing Passat's and that dealer will be selling them long after your need or itch passes.

It's not uncommon to see a sign at a dealer that reads something like "that car you look at today and want to buy tomorrow may have already been looked at by someone yesterday who will buy today". Remind them that you're ready to buy now when the right deal comes along that's fair to both and that the customer that's sitting before them willing to complete a fair deal today may be driving a new vehicle from a more reasonable dealer by tomorrow.

A dealer needs your money more than you need "that" car from them.

Thanks for the tips guys, ill get the grind on this afternoon if i can get caught up at work. Ive purchased several cars but always cash/financing in hand, ive never traded. Like several have mentioned, there just arent many stickshifts out there and dealers know that. however in the south, no one can drive them either :)

My nearest "local" dealer wanted $300 ABOVE sticker, plus a $275 doc fee...that was 11 days ago and the car is still showing up in their inventory.

I drove 170 miles to a dealer in Atlanta who made me a decent price for a TDI SE (invoice plus $400 doc fee).

They are making money, for certain. Mine went for $26765 MSRP, and I paid $24,900, plus tax and license and a $25 doc fee. Find a dealer with 2 3 or 4 SE TDI's in stock, feign like you want a DSG, test drive the DSG first, always, then act like you have to settle for a 6 manual, or you can't do the deal, can't afford it. I doubt choice of color will be much of an option for you at this time. You get what you get, and you get lucky if you can get into one of these in the first place.

I went to several dealers this weekend, see the last entry in my sig...
BTW, most dealer experiences are not pleasant, especially when it comes to price.

Traitor....

Korean? Really?
Oh no you didn't...:p
I still have my passat, which is probably eating its cam and followers every time it is driven based on my 90k mile inspection and the new sound I am hearing since 98k. I dodged one bullet by getting the BSM done under warranty and look forward to tranny problems. So yes, no more VWs and yes, Korean.
I also can now fix the passat on my terms while driving a new and reliable car for 100k miles without fear of more vw design problems (HPFP anyone?) If my passat had a 100k warranty, we would not be talking about this...
I hope this does not turn into a flame/bash topic and will only respond to reasonable replies to prevent that.

No problem...too bad my 3rd vw did not last as long as my first 2, or I would have jumped on the new passat for sure. I sounds like a great car.
Oh, and the kia is assembled in the USA also.

Not sure yet, too new to me. I don't even know the injection pressure or if it's common rail, etc..
There was TSB for early ones to have an adjustment for the boost issue, covered by warranty.
The forums don't reveal many really bad issues, but I'm looking...
Like any new vehicle, there is alway a chance that something will eventually pop up, thus my choice for the 10yr/100k warranty.

Edit;
What is high pressure? TDI requires over 20,000 psi IIRC (27000?) and the T-GDI in the kia is less than 2000 psi (1450 actually), so it's not apples to apples.
I also learned that it is not an interferance engine and has no timing belt. It does have a balance shaft and the single fuel pump is cam driven but doesn't rob the valve lobes of contact area. Again I'll defer to the 10y/100k warranty, follow the maintenance schedule and hope for the best.

I was having the same trouble as you with the cost thing. Chris had given me a great quote and has a car ordered for me now, no deposit or anything. A local dealer that I had visited befor I talked to Chris calls me to try to get me into a tdi. I tell him I am not interested that I have a dealer 7 hours away that will get me the car for a couple hundred over invoice. I show him this forum and my quote and he comes down but is still a couple of hundred dollars above Chris saying I would pay that in cost just to get to Philly to get the car. After thinking about it I ask the local dealer, why can he not give a local customer the same deal as Chris. They will not and so Im going to deal with Chris at Langhorn. Anyone that will go to that trouble to get my business will. I guess it is just the whole point of the matter. Id rather drive than deal locally.

My local dealership gave me the run around, told me they couldn't order me the car I wanted. Day before they told me they could get me any color and combo I wanted if I ordered. Said something that I was shopping for price, not for what was in inventory. Solved their attitude the same day, 15 minutes later, made a deal over the phone, got a comp price very close to that Cars.com ad in Fall Rivers, MA. Dealerships are getting greedy over these passat TDI's. Do your homework, be willing to travel for big savings, even if it means burning a few vacation days to save almost a couple of thousand or more.

VW is still producing ONLY TDI's right now. I spoke with my Dealership and they say VW is still backlogged for months. Even with the ramped up production they still can't keep up. This is one awesome seller for VW.

You wouldn't know it by the amount of participation here in the B7 section of TDIclub.
