2011 sportwagon
I'm brand new to this forum and just purchased my first new TDI. It's an '11 Spotwagon. My question is I will be putting aprox. 22,000 miles on per year. I have about a 5 mile daily mountain drive and all the rest will be dual lane highway miles. I bought a standard shift and plan on keeping it until it rots away. The dealer tried to sell me an extended warranty, but I declined until I could do a little research. The plan he offered was 5/60 for $900. w/100 deductable. The crazy thing is it was through a Honda/accura dealer plan and I'd have to take it those guys. What would they know about a vw diesel? What I'd realy like to know is will an extended warranty be cost effective for a load of highway miles? I know no one has a crystal ball out there, but how well do these cars hold up in these conditions?
Thank You

Well any car can have major expensive repairs.

The profit to the salesman and company is usually over 50%. So for every $1,000 you spend the insurance company has less than $500 to pay for repairs or they will loose money, something insurance companies do not do. Some people will get nothing back and some will get a lot more than they pay. Most will get far less. In addition you need to keep in mind that the insurer has worded it to eliminate as many expensive things as they can.

Remember that the seller is out to make money and they get to write the rules and set the price. They are not going to sell them at a loss so one way or another they are going to have you pay more than they will pay out.

Would you gamble with a car dealer who gets to set all the rules and knows all the odds?

Your decision has to do with the value of the piece of mind it gives you. If that is worth the cost then buy it. Don't expect it to cover everything however, most are written to keep cost down and exempt what they know will cost them money.

Good Luck

I gambled and won BIG on my extended warranty. But that is because I have
a 2005 Passat TDI with it's attendant issues. My point here is that, to my mind
at least, IF the Common Rail cars end up with any kind of "flaws" in their engineering,
VW and VWoA will just as likely ignore them as they are doing with my car. That should
be factored into the equation also. Does the VW plan require that you go to a VW
dealer for work, or can you go to the the shop of your choice?
As for where and who to buy an extended warranty from, check out different plans
from different companies, not simply VW's, to see what is and is not covered.
My plan was pretty thorough even though they were slow and a little cranky about
shelling out $4700+/- in the end. And if you decide to go with anyone's plan, drive
a couple or 3 hours away and buy it from someone there so that you are not saddled
with having to take the car to the dealer you bought it from at home. OR if you
decide to buy it from VW, check out, Chris at VW of Langhorne (PA). He was offering
VW's extended plan pretty reasonably here on the board some time back.
