New member here. I'm purchasing a 2015 Golf SEL 6speed and I looked up the Vin on VW site but I'm not sure how to decipher what's under warranty and for how long. If I should take it in to get further warranty work done before something breaks or I exceed miles. It currently has 79k miles. I don't really understand the nomenclature of it all. Here is what the website says when I put in my Vin. I tried searching here but didn't find my answer.Thanks.

Modification Approved by EPA and CARB:YES
Modification Completed for this Vehicle (VIN):PARTIAL
Vehicle has Extended Emissions Warranty:YES
Vehicle Eligibility and Emissions Modification Status:
An emissions modification has been approved for this vehicle by EPA and CARB. Our records show that a partial modification has been completed, and additional modification(s) may still be required.

Extended Emissions Warranty Information*:
The vehicle has an Extended Emissions Warranty that runs for 11 years or 162,000 miles from the original in-service date. Please see your VW dealership for additional information including the vehicle's in-service date.

In addition, and concurrently, the Extended Emissions Warranty runs for 5 years or 60,000 miles (whichever occurs first) from the date of modification or first dealer resale post-modification. Your vehicle was modified on Mar 12, 2019 and 42,261 miles. Please see your VW dealership for additional information on the vehicle's post-modification dealer re-sale date.

The same website you used has links with documents explaining everything that is covered.
What is it that you don't understand so that we may attempt to explain it to you?

I don't understand the dates for what's completely covered and what's not and for how much longer. Sorry for my ignorance on this issue. With the 2 separate dates and warranties mentioned it kind of confuses me. Also,i don't much understand the phases of the warranty how it still say partial as if there's still stuff that can be done under the warranty. I just want to get ahead of it and do what's best for the longevity of the car. This is my first TDI. Thanks for the reply.

You can't get anything done before it breaks. Everything is contingent on a check engine light coming on. You can only get it serviced so everything is up to date, that won't be covered under warranty. The two warranties deal with the initial long one and then another that was effective from the time of the first emissions mod repair. You have about a year or so left on the long one and the other has expired on time already. I am assuming the car was first sold in 2015 but maybe not. I bought mine new in 2017 after the court settlement. So another couple of years due to that.

Call a dealer and get them to tell you the "in service date"
Then, start doing the math.

I just went over it. So correct me if I'm wrong, but looks like if phase 1 was completed March 12 2019 at 42k miles. The 5 yr 60k warranty expired March 12 2024?

For the 11yr 162k... Looking at the carfax looks like first owner was reported 6/15/2015 so the warranty goes until 6/15/25?

I don't know why they included 2 warranties that's what makes it confusing for me. If my above calculations are correct, now the question remains as to what should I do from the warranty standpoint. Take it in and let them do the phase 2 ASAP or wait until the last possible minute? I also saw at phase 2 completion that adds another 5yrs 60k to the warranty.

Yes, it was purchased according to the carfax June 2015. So I can't take it in close to the expiration of the warranty and have them complete phase 2? If I read correctly once phase 2 is completed it then ads another 5 yr 60k warranty from that date.

"At the time of the subsequent Phase 2 modification, the extended warranty will be honored for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the date and mileage of the completion of Phase 2."

Carfax is not a dealer. Get the info from the horse's mouth not a 3rd party.

I just messaged live chat on VW site. They said this when I asked about the warranty and also asked when I could do phase 2 since website showed it to be partial.

Phase 2 shows as completed as well. Your VIN shows 23Y8 2.0L TDI Engine (GEN 3 - Phase 2 A & B) Emissions Closed Action Repair Date 03/12/2019 by Volkswagen of Saint Augustine The TDI Extended warranty is active until 05-23-2026 or 162,000 miles whichever occurs first. You can check with a dealership if you would like on phase 2 if you believe that it wasn't completed. it would be able to be completed at any time regards of warranty or time.
