I just got this letter in the mail; basically saying that the exhaust flap is covered for 10 years or 120k miles now. There was also a reimbursement form for those who has already paid for this repair.

I'm sure this is good news for those of us that still use that part
Thanks , Same thing in Canada. I have applied for a reimbursement last week. VW had already paid 50%, so I'm going for a $200 additional refund

Is there a way to check and see if your own TDI is covered, because I can't remember if I got the letter or not and have since moved yet still have my car or is it basically all 09- select 12s are under the umbrella?

I own a '10 and I'm not sure if I have the letter anymore and dealer is closed so guess just assuming that it's covered given P048A code + 2010 TDI? Thanks!

Just got fixed for free (thank God) under TSB and got the mis-fueling guard installed as well.

Original code was for stuck closed, went away, got flashing glow plug + limp mode, no lights, then this morning CEL came back and service record shows stuck open code. Didn't know it could cause limp mode, but if it were indeed stuck closed I suppose it's possible, at least I hope that was the reasoning for the FGP.

Hope this helps anyone.

Old thread...

VW Customer Care advised me that the extended warranty for the MK6 Exhaust Flap is covered until 2022.

It is my impression from the letter I got from VW that the coverage is for ten years or 120,000 miles.

whichever comes first.

Just became another victim of the exhaust flap epidemic. Heading out Of work early on Friday I noticed the check engine light on. Called my dealer and asked if they could run the codes if I could stop by in half an hour. Stopped by they ran the codes and it was the exhaust flap. Took it in and fixed it in an hour while I shot the sh*t with the service manager. Even one of the techs came out to ask me about some of my mods and double checked to see if I had a tune before they did a computer upgrade. All covered under warranty. very happy with my local dealer

Just got a letter in the mail today regarding an exhaust flap warranty extension (the letter references 2012-2013 CJAA and CKRA equipped cars). So I guess I'm good on the flap and the fuel system until 120000. By then it'll be time to get something else since the car will probably be 10 years old.

Got my letter yesterday too. I will be mailing in for the reimbursement since I had to replace this around 40k. $400 something bucks will be nice to have back.

Submitted my paperwork for reimbursement of $538 I spent to have my Exaust Flap replaced. Glad VW decided to step up on this. BTW, since I have replaced the exhaust flap, I have not had one NOx sensor CEL. Glad I waited before I went ahead and replaced the NOx sensor.

Mind sharing who you're local dealer is? I'm in Somerville, car just threw a P048A and P047F (pending) this morning, hoping if I need the valve replaced my local dealer (Colonial) will be friendly with my 2012.

Just be sure NOT to go to the Wellesley VW dealer. I had the worst dealer experience of my life there. Although it was with sales not service but still. The WORST.

I did not know about this extended warranty. If I got the letter I either threw it away or lost it.... I called dealer and they had it in their records.
I did get the HPFP extension a few months backs... Yea. So I have about 5 years and 45K left.

Had the flap replaced today.
Check engine light came on the first startup after I had my 3yr/30,000mi service done 2 weekends ago, about 1500mi early but only a week ahead of the 3yr mark.

At first they gave me some hassle about the vehicle being out of warranty, yes, by a week... and wanting to charge $165 to look at it, saying it probably wouldn't be related - though the light came on on the very next start up after they'd serviced and did a couple recall items.
Stood my ground and they took care of it.

Likelihood of returning to this dealer for anything now that warranty is up hovers around 0%. Good chance I'll invest in vag-com and DIY from here on.

Never got the actual letter but just called the dealer and my Canadian unit is covered.

Now I'm not sure I want to let the dealer touch it or just get my local guy to fix it. My closest dealer is a 4hr drive (one way). Mind you they'll most likely replace it - Might just go with my local shop and hope it doesn't happen again before the warranty ends... or maybe it will?

The MIL light on my 2013 TDI Sportwagen came on at 44000 kilometers, I had just received a recall letter for some software issue a few weeks prior. Took the car on for the 45k service, at which time they replaced the "flapper" under warranty. They also replaced both front sway bar links for the second time as the front was sounding like a bucket of marbles. All this was done no charge under warranty so no issues with this in Canada. I seem to be using a bit more fuel since that service took place. Wondering what else they may have "adjusted".

Had the car in to my local guy last week and he got it moving, though not 100% to his satisfaction. Cleared the code and so far, so good. I have about 40k km before the extended warranty is up. So either it doesn't happen again, or it does and I get VW to replace it and hope for the best.

Sorry to bring you all back from hibernation, but did anyone have issues with getting the work done if your CEL had magically turned off right before you were scheduled for service?

Mine came on originally, scanned, found both flapper codes. Scheduled service, then of course the light goes off, and it sounds like the flapper is working at shutdown. The codes will still be stored for them to read, but they probably won't touch the car for free if the CEL isn't on. To read the codes is $$ if the CEL isn't on.

Thoughts? How harmful to drive the car if the CEL is on for the flap, and you don't hear it flapping away at startup and shutdown (stuck open/closed).

Thanks for a quick reply, service is monday morning.

You really don't hear it flapping away.

if the exhaust flap is stuck open or partway shut, the only issue is that the NOX regens will not happen,

(meaning this is not a fix before driving kind of thing)

but with the MIL lit, you could miss other issues that are more expensive if not fixed when noted.

how close to 120k are you?
