If anyone is considering using Diesel Purge on their PD, read and heed!

I attempted to use Diesel Purge on my Passat PD yesterday at Impexfest 06.

We were succesful using it on OFHS93's Jetta, but in hindsight it was because it was not a PD.

When we did mine, it was a different story.

We decided to connect the hoses to the fuel filter intake and the outtake from the tee fitting. I put the fuel hoses into a container to prevent them from dripping (a lucky move considering what was about to happen).

So I started the car and #$%$#^ I forgot a PD has a lift pump in the fuel tank:eek::eek::eek:. Yup, those lines sitting in the container quickly filled it to the top with diesel. So, we clamped off the hoses and tried it again.

Now, we knew that the fuel return hose would be quite hot dues to the pressures involved in the PD fuel systems, just not that hot! Within a few minutes, the hoses we were using had softened up too much so they did not hold on the connectors and the can of Diesel Purge was too hot to touch  At that point, we called it quits. We only managed to get a quarter can of DP through the system.

If you ever find you have to run DP through your PD, then I would do it the following way:

Clamp shut and then remove the filter intake and outtake (from the tee)..

Get some real fuel line that can withstand high temperatures. Attach to the filter intake and tee outtake and insert into the can of Diesel Purge. Remember to make sure that both hoses can fit into the Diesel Purge container at the same time. Set the can somewhere where it is not touching any plastic or something that is not liable to be softened by the heat.

Purge away! DO NOT touch the can during the purge. It is very hot.

Will I do it again? Probably not. I did it more as a curiousity thing. Besides, I can't tell if it really helped out because I broke down and got an RC2 upgrade from Jeff. ;);)

Could you put the can of diesel purge in a bucket of ice or something?
If you were able to cool the incoming fuel a little bit, then the return fuel wouldn't be as hot either.

That would work, but you still need to make sure the hose can withstand the heat and won't pop off the fittings.

After watching this attempted at ImpexFest I decided to go about it differently. I just waited till 40 miles after my low fuel light came on and then just dumped it in the tank. 40 miles later I did my full 40,000 service including changing the oil and the fuel filter, which I filled with powerservice. I really can't tell if it helped or not.

For an already good and purring diesel it can do little to nothing. The least it could do is give the nozzles a good cleaning.

If you have issues though it can solve them or at least try too.

IMO it's good preventive maintenance especially if you run Biodiesel in cold weather.
