My only experience with VW's is my 02 TDI 5Sp Beetle, and its been a great car all 285,000 miles . But I would like to buy a newer model. TDI 6sp in something possibly. But I would rather not deal with the DEF fluid cars . So whats dependable after the ALH 5 speeds>??

Well if you do not want an SCR car, then that just rules out the NMS Passat, all the 2015 models, and all the V6 models.
Dependability is subjective. Statistically, I do not think much of anything will be as dependable as your ALH car within the same period of time from the factory. There are certainly things you can do to the newer cars to limit their liability to breakdowns, of course.

All NMS Passats have SCR, so 2012+, as well as all the V6 models.
The rest of the 4 cyl models (Golf, Jetta, G/J wagon, Beetle, A3), did not get SCR until 2015.
So a wagon without SCR would be 2009-14.
