VWR springs on an american TDI?

I am awaiting delivery of my TDI - interested in utilizing the VWR springs to tighten up the suspension. Will they work on the American TDI with the solid rear axle - trailing arm set up? I can't find a parts schematic/exploded view to see how the setup works.

Golf? Jetta? by VWR do you mean Golf R? MKVI or VII?

You might want to drive the car before deciding to trash the stock setup. I had a loaner MKVII Golf TDI over last weekend and it handles pretty well stock.

I test drove a TDI S - "handles pretty well" is a subjective term. It has a fair bit more body roll than I like in a car.

Looking to install the volkswagen racing springs designed for the Golf MK7 on the Golf TDI SEL I am awaiting delivery on - they lower it about an inch and are designed by volkswagen to work with the stock shock so there is no degradation in ride - it just takes some of the roll out in the corners. They also preserve the factory warranty.

Not sure if R rear springs would work on the TDI. I know that older R32 and TDI rear springs were not interchangeable. And I doubt the shocks are the same: they probably are valved differently. See if you can get part numbers for the stock and R shocks, I'm betting the suffix is different. On the MKVI there are 4 different stock shocks.

Thanks for your input, but it is not a spring from an R - it is a spring specifically developed for the GTI and non-GTI golfs - see the link to the product here: http://www.ngpracing.com/newstore/vwr-sport-springs-30mm-drop-mk7-golf-gti.html#/product/8847

Just trying to see whether it will work on the USA TDI suspension.

Product description says it's OK for non-GTIs. I honestly don't know if the 1.8T Golf has IRS or a beam axle. If it's a beam then they'll work. If not I'd say no, as they don't specify the TDI.

These are developed by APR, not VW. They're aftermarket. Not sure how they get away with using the logo on them. And spring makers have for years said you can run their lowering springs with stock dampers. Caveat Emptor.

I know its strange, but they are sold right in the VW accessories catalog:

http://contents.vw.ca/vw4/accessories/index.php?lang=en

TSI golf has IRS, only the TDI has the beam axle, allegedly because the def reservoir takes up the space and IRS system would occupy.

This isn't sprig makers saying its OK, VW is saying its ok!

Why do you think those are the same springs as the ones in the ngpracing catalog? And the VW catalog says "not for cars with factory sport suspension." I think the TDI would qualify as having that. I'm betting they're little different than what comes in the TDI, and from what I read it seems they won't fit.

It's the same one - that's why it has the VW logo on it. The TDI doesn't have a sport suspension. It's the most unsporty of the entire golf line. Thanks for your help. I will take it from here.

Has anybody put VWR springs in yet?

I am also awaiting delivery and would like to know what the deal is with compatibility between torsion beam / irs golfs.

Found this part number on another one of Korab's threads for the springs: VWR31G7BA, but it hasn't been tested on a US TDI

I'd put money on the springs being vastly different from a TDI with a solid beam and an IRS Golf Spring.

VWR makes a spring for the TDI. They work exactly as expected. There is a post on mk7 forum with pictures.

Put them in yesterday. Driver front you just need to remove the inner axle, passenger side I had to bang the axle out of the hub and removed ball joint to get clearance. I would use a puller next time. Rears were a joy, just drop the beam held in by one bolt on each side and the springs come right out.

Before & after

Suspension is still comfortable over potholes, but much less roll and float in turns.

Is the camber affected? Don't want the insides of my tires wearing out quickly.

Also, any options for under body scrape pans yet? Might need on if I lower her.

I don't know how to measure camber, but I will be getting an alignment after letting them settle. Haven't seen any skid plates yet either.

You're def going to need an alignment after, but these springs shouldn't put you out of alignable spec range. These aren't an extreme drop like the HR cup kits or similar.

I tried to get some better pics today, but the sky always wants to rain on my days off.

I added ECS' 15mm front and 20mm rear spacers for aesthetics. There's about 250 miles on the springs. Wheel gap in the front looks a little taller than the rear, but hardly noticeable. Still hoping it comes down a bit more.

For alignment I brought it to two different Mavis shops, one told me the car was too low, the other told me they didn't want to do it without the 2015 specs, so I had to bring it to dealer for $169. Here's the printout I got from dealer.

Man it looks awesome. It looks like the stock height of my mk6 TDI. I'm definitely thinking about doing this.

Hmm please take FTG measurements after they settle. Would like to know if they still have the reverse rake.

60 day report, how do you like them, settled in and all, are they too stiff, much stiffer than factory, too low?

I've had mine on for about 2 months now. At first I thought they were too stiff but now I love them. I do a lot of highway driving and soon after the install I was wondering if I'd done wrong by getting them as I was feeling more bumps in the road, but either they smoothed out or my butt got use to them (mostly the latter).

Ride height hasn't changed since week 1. I also installed spacers which now makes my tires look smaller than before.

My biggest hold up is the camber. Any premature wearing?

no, camber won't change in the rear and I took it for an alignment after a few miles and it is within spec in the front. Will keep the tires rotated every 10k miles so the front don't wear weird. I'll look again tomorrow when I bathe it and get the road salt off.
